I think the stores that bring in the most money they really focus on customer service and invest in them, and they just let the lower performing stores go to the dogs. You can tell, walk into any Publix that never gets busy, they are usually pretty outdated, in need of repair, and are very shorthanded.

@stpetepimp actually, having actually worked at several Publix stores, I can say its the opposite man. The first store I worked at wasn't all that busy, but we really cared about our customers. The last store I was assigned too was so busy all the time that we usually had to stay strictly focused on our tasks rather than help the customer find something (we always told them where to find it) when they needed help. Also, the smaller store had a better layout than the big busy store.

Not all Publix stores are ran the same way. Some stores such as #259(Mine) and 640 are ran great. Nice clean stores that arn't rotting to the ground with plenty of help. Then there are some stores are ran like Walmart. They usually have 3 registers open with no baggers at all. Everything is thrown on the shelf in the wrong spots like they just throw their stock anywhere. Half dozen lights burned out, bad roof leaks, and restrooms with toilets that shift on the floor when you sit on them.

I work at #259 and I always get complaints on how #1321 never has any baggers. Then they said, when the cashiers don't have a bagger, the cashiers just bag it up and leave it at the end of the registers, then start scanning the next order. My store is withing walking distance from #1321 so I assume they are losing customers to ours.

I prefer being a bagger over a cashier or customer service staff. There's too much time spent just standing around as either of the latter, while baggers get to run all over the place. I get to jump from register to register, occasionally open up on a register if it gets busy, get carts, do extra work in the back... it makes the day go by fast. And it breaks up the monotony. But who you work with can make or break how good a day is sometimes.
