@Bertziethegreat It's just the electronics that change. Very simple really. If you go ahead with it you should use magnetic rotary knobs to avoid future problems with cutting chips. Then you would need a something to convert the knob signal into square wave and connect it to the stepper motor controllers. It's as easy as that.

@TheAlf2222 The program was actually lost. Should obviously make a new one. The idea for it was to convert notes into G-code. Then we used a commercial program to read the G-code and run the milling machine. Driver electronics and interface to computer are of own design. And so is whole mechanical structure.

@thoughtupquick Did my reply to TheAlf2222 clarify it? This is also a pretty common thing to do. So you can probably find something to read about it by googling. The main idea is that the stepper motors, that move the milling machines head make the noise. And when they are moved in the right speed they make the tone you want.
