IRAQ was a war between countrys and in afghanistan it is a war between the ISAF and the Insurgents. I can understand your boyfreind 1. you get more money in afghanistan and 2. he is a soldier and he trained for years for such a deployment. it is like you study medicin and become a doctor than you also want to work as doctor. He told me last week hes going to be finished at the end of stepember but aswell as that he told me he dosent want to go to war.. becuase hes not the kind of person to go to war.. I know that a year ago germany had a law to send all young men to the army .. which is why he went .. but i know that ended :) I dont know much about the army either

I feel they are also culturally sensitive than most of the younger American soldiers (I don't know anyone personally, but this is my impression from watching way too many youtube clips from soldiers in Iraq)

@tryme211, I think you have a point. Unlike languages such as French and English, German is only spoken in Germany (as far as I am aware). However, if you were to visit a country I think its important to try that language and not assume everyone speaks English because that would be rude.

German is spoken also in Switzerland, Austria, Brazil, heck, even in the US ! It`s just not that widespread as the english language, because German is really hard to learn for non-native speakers.

I think because English is so universal, schools in English speaking nations dont put as much emphasis on learning French, German etc, Its pretty embarassing when you go to these other countries because most people seem to be bi-lingual and heres me who speaks 1 language.

....I forgot to add that there is also a shortage of good learning material for the german language. ;-) It`s pretty easy to get a good grip of English via watching TV-Series, it`s a lot harder to do the same with German.

@paukelino well....If you think about it, [many] German soldiers SPEAK English (or American) because they're exposed to duel language skills at an early age in the German school system. This skill, in turn, helps make a better soldier. These guys seem very squared away and confident in their ability to kick ass - in any language! LOL - mit hohen Ehren ausgezeichnet.
