Oh my, he's making such an effort to sing! Listen to his voice... God! He was down that night... Still, he's always on the very top, so no problem at all :)
God... JM have lost his full potential and joy somewhere in the past. Something went terribly wrong with this guy, and I, as a very, very long time JM fan, want to know what it was, since today he is definitively not that joyful performer he used to be. Just listen to "Room for Squares" and "Heavier Things" and watch to "Any Given Thurday" (maybe the best lead-singer DVD ever done) to understand what I'm saying. It's a shame, but we can say he is currently making covers of his own songs.
@Birelli80 I don't know how much of a Mayer fan your are but when you like an artist i think it comes natural to accept their music as it progresses, to keep doing what he was doing would be impossible, he has grown up and life experiences-souces for songs- have changed!
@foxyfoxy06 We're not complaining about his composing of songs. We're complaining about his "musical spirit" which is missing now. I can't talk for Birelli80 but I'm a huge Mayer fan and it's a big step to say things like that. It's easy to keep your eyes/ears/mind closed and say he is just progressing. It's a hard piece of work to see his losing his "musical spirit"
@Birelli80 To be honest, I have to agree. He's not touching me more like he did in older days. Of course, technically he became better on guitar and in vocals also (except this show) but he's loosing his spirit...He doesn't concentrate on the main thing, the feelings and how to transmit them.
@guitarplayer1994 Man... I do, too! In the past, this guy's concerts had an unique atmosphere that is completely lost today. You're right: today he's better on guitar and vocals (maybe), but he lost his "musicist spirit".
@guitarplayer1994 I could not agree more!!! He is technically better now, but that is all. I think the issue is that the hunger is gone. In 2002, he was still proving himself and was out to show everybody. He isn't hungry anymore!!! The version of this on Any given thursday is incredible!! And he hit flat notes then, so thats not it. But he was exciting to watch back then. I believe this idea has effected his songwriting also.
He is still one of the best, but his spirit is different now.
A little off!!! This is embarassing to listen to. He most definitely need a pitch corrector, and does so on his concert dvd's, thank God! - Great guitarplayer though :)
@NorseMayers Why does everybody think he's "a bit off" when the only thing he does is NOT use a stupid PitchCorrector thing, which he does in a lot of his concerts... This is John Mayer singing for real, and it's great. He doesn't need stupid technology to control his voice! But when he does use it, almost nobody notices and thinks that is how he sounds for real... He's the best, but only when he's singing for real, like in this concert!
They should have done all this recording on Nov 5 at the Metro theatre in Sydney. If that performance was made into a dvd, this video would have a bazillion hits! I

Every album of his has been different yet the same. Thats why I like them. Battle Studies has a 70's California rock feel....yet it still feels like Mayer. Anyway, this song has always been one of my favorites.
I didn't like this performance. Maybe something with the monitor or maybe it just shows us that john mayer has grown out of his pop ego. I think continuum was his peek including where the light is. Battle studies is inspiring but nothing like contnuum.
