  • I have checked on the "Stick Shed Syndrome" and one article mentions Scotch 226, and 227 as well as 806 to 809. 226 and 227 are the Highlander series, their lowest grade. I'm unfamiliar with 806 to 809. Scotch 206 and 207 are not mentioned as well as the Dynarange series. BASF isn't mentioned at all. I've had a bad experience with Ampex though, however I don't know if all their tapes are affected. I've been using Scotch, BASF, Memorex, RCA,and Radio Shack / Supertape. I haven't had any problems.

  • I wouldn’t say all reel tape lasts 50 years. It depends on things like the type of tape, how well it has been stored, etc. Improper storage in high humidity can cause the tape to absorb moisture, which in turn breaks down the tape. Ampex and Scotch brand tapes are notorious for this, especially if they are back coated. Google “sticky shed syndrome” for more information about this. I’ve had to throw out many reels of tape because of this problem.

  • @MrRandrews3 I am lucky so far, no such problem. Of course, I know better than putting my tapes in a humid place or outside in a shed. They are in my room.

  • That chap still has his video posted on his troubles with his 630 but there's no new information on how his repairs ar coming along. I won that auction on Ebay for those Scotch 215 Superlife tapes. Some of those Scotch 203 Dynarange tapes I have the "Made By 3M" and "Scotch" logos enbossed on the reels in gold. The packaging is practically identical to the 215 tapes. The cases are white plastic like BASF with a cardboard sleeve in green and white with the red, black, and white plaid design.

  • There is an auction currently on Ebay for some new Scotch 215 Superlife tapes. These come in plastic cases similar to BASF. I have some of these tapes and they're worth going after. I recorded some music off the radio last night onto some Shamrock tapes and was pleasantly surprised by the performance. I got these tapes through Ebay last year from someone here in Montreal. They come from a recording studio. What happened to that chap who has had problems with his 630? Has he resolved them?

  • @91165655497 I hope so!

  • I'm just recording some Beatles music on Scotch 150. Pretty good results. Recording at 7 1/2 i.p.s. so the sound coming out matches the sound going in. I have a number of these I got through Ebay brand new. I received a dozen of these brand new in the original 3M box about a month ago, using one of them now. I have quite a few Scotch open reel tapes, my favourite and I can't say that I have ever had a bad experience with them especially when bought new. Scotch was one of the better brands !!

  • From what I can see, this Scotch 177 tape has a response very similiar to that of Scotch Dynarange, one of my all time favourite tapes. Very clear treble response even at 3 3/4 allowing for more time on the tape resulting in a doubling of recording time when compared to 7 1/2 i.p.s. Now that the recording is on tape I'll rarely play those albums again keeping them at the condition they were in when they arrived. Listening to the music I can't tell the difference between the vinyl and the tape.

  • I have just finished recording some Elvis Presley records on my Sony TC-630. Fantastic machine ! I'm listening to the recording now, sounds like Elvis is in the other room. Music recorded on Scotch 177. Good tape, recorded at 7 1/2 & 3 3/4 i.p.s. for the last song, not enough tape left at 7 1/2 for the last one. Albums; "Elvis In Person" "Back In Memphis" and "Pure Gold". Crystal clear and natural sound, great machine and a very good tape. First time I've used it. Got it on Ebay. SONY TC-630 !!

  • Agreed. That's how I have treated my brand new vinyl records over the years. However, nowadays, all the records I buy are used. I find them in yard sales and charity bazars. Also, I use different grades of turntables for different levels of record conditions (near mint vinyl on my Linn Axis, slightly worn records or with a few scratches go on my Technics SL-1900, worn out records go on a portable Califone, etc).

But I might record again eventually in the future. :-)

  • If you record your vinyl albums onto tape using your Sony TC-630, you will not see a difference if using quality tape and 7 1/2 I.P.S. You can get by pretty well recording at 3 3/4 I.P.S. if using Scotch Dynarange, 206, 207, Classic,Master or Sony SLH and ULH tapes. The BASF tapes do an excellent job as well. I have 4 hours of Beatles music on BASF FERRO SUPER 2400 ft.recorded over 30 years ago and it still sounds very good. Keep your albums as masters and play the taped copies-longer lasting.

  • That's where you're wrong. Playing a record repeatedly will wear out the viny and your needle a lot quicker than playing a tape. There's a lot more wear involved with a needle digging into a record. I always played my records once and recorded them right away. That way I could preserve my records far longer and keep them in mint condition. It's the same principle with video tapes, I would record with my video camera only one time on tape, then transfer it to VHS or DVD,and keep the original.

  • Not recording on tape anymore ? You keep your TC-630 as a museum piece ? Mine is the mainstay of all my recording. I record onto my 630 from vinyl or whatever then transfer to cassette if need be. An avation electronics engineer friend of mine recently told me that CD's/DVD's have the same lifespan like VHS tape, about 15 years.Reel to reel tape lifespan is about 50 years. Also, CD's don't produce sound faithfully the way tape does.I have tapes from the sixties that still sound fresh today.

  • @91165655497 I use it to play the tapes I already have made in the past. I mostly collect music on vinyl records. Making tapes is just compiling music for me. What matters to me is the original source of the sound. Recording my vinyls on tape doesn't help preserve anything, it's just for fun.

  • There is a lot of 7 Scotch 207 tapes brand new and sealed currently on Ebay. The present bid is for approximately 31 dollars and the shipping cost is 31 dollars. Here is your chance to get some of the best reel to reel tapes ever made. There is also a lot of 12 brand new Sony SLH 1800 ft. tapes up for bid. The cost of shipping for that lot is $55 dollars. The cost of shipping these days is quite high, but it is the price to pay if you want some brand new tapes. Not available around here !

  • @91165655497 There's your chance to stock up!

I'm good. I don't record anymore on tape. Plus I have a stash of blank tapes in case I start again. :-)

  • I have received my "Peter Frampton Comes Alive!" double LP from Ebay and I'm recording it on BASF LH Super HI FI and of course the recorder is the Sony TC-630. I'm recording at 7 1/2 I.P.S. and there's no difference between vinyl and tape ! Absolutely flawless sound quality. Crisp and clear as always. And, of course that natural warm sound that you can ONLY get from vinyl and tape ! Down with CD's, bring back vinyl records and open reel !!

  • You can't judge Scotch recording tape by the numbers alone. I'm not sure what those numbers represent, but their lowest grade was the Highlander series in the blue box. I have 2 1200 ft. reels of this tape and the number is 228. Catalog no. is 228 - 1/4 - R60. The 90 minute tapes are 226. These tapes are not nearly as good as the 150 , yet they have a higher number than the 206 and 207, go figure ! Scotch 150 is on a par with the Sony PR-150. Don't judge a book by it's cover ! Happy Taping !!

  • 150 was the standard formulation before all the current ones you're familiar with. I just received a box of 12 brand new ones, plus some pthers that I picked up individually. 150 was used to desginate tapes of 1800 ft. 200 was for tapes of 2400 ft.They are silicone lubricated and professional as marked on the box. They do not come with the backcoating of later tapes. I also received 2 Scotch 177 tapes, brand new. They have no leaders attached either. Not all tapes had leaders attached.

  • I'm just recording some Boston and Jefferson Airplane onto RCA Red Seal tape. It rates as equal to Scotch 150 from what I can see. A good tape if you can find some, probably on Ebay. I also picked up some RCA Red Seal tapes (2) in boxes of an older classic design, with the "RCA" label on the reels themselves. I have some Scotch 203's on the way and have tried a Scotch 215 "Superlife" tape, excellent ! I'm getting the Peter Frampton Comes Alive album soon as well, a favourite, good on Scotch 207

  • @91165655497 I'm not familiar with Scotch 150. I have some 142 and they're a bit disappointing. I wouldn't go any lower than Scotch 176.

  • I also have a couple of Scotch Dynarange 203 tapes in the same plastic cases with the white cardboard sleeve with the green label and tartan trademark. these plastic cases are identical to those used by BASF except they have 3M embossed on the flip open doors. I have never seen these tapes sold here like this here in Quebec. I have a Dynarange 203 in the usual black and white cardboard box and Tartan label, but without the plastic bag or leaders attached. More variety in the U.S. !

  • I have just ordered a near mint condition Graham Gouldman Animalympics LP from the U.K. with the hit song "Go For It". I wanted the original vinyl release as I don't like the quality of the recording off the computer. It was not available on Ebay so I searched the net and found a source from the U.K.. I just received a shipment of 6 Scotch " 215 Superlife " tapes 1800 ft. I suspect that these are a variant of the Dynarange series and they are brand new. They come in white plastic cases like BASF.

  • FTW ? , Not quite sure what that means but it must be good. There are more Scotch Dynarange and 206/207 tapes available on Ebay. I don't know what the production run was on these tapes but there must have been many of them made to still be available brand new. I have also received new Dynarange 202 and 203 and some others on 5 inch reels, 212 and 214. Might be thousands of these brand new tapes sitting in warehouses across the U.S.

  • @91165655497 FTW = for the win or fucks the world, both positive :-)

It's great that there are still lots of them around!

  • FTW ?

  • I've been to an antique flea market where there is a vendor that sells good to ecellent quality LP's. I'm just recording them on my TC-630 on my favourite tape, Scotch 207 ! Recording at 7 1/2 and 3 3/4 i.p.s. Taping my favourite band, The Beatles. Many of his customers are new to the sound of vinyl and are flocking to this "New" sound. Pity that they didn't grow up with vinyl and open reel. They sure missed out not having a Sony TC-630 and all the other excellent reel to reel tape decks !

  • @91165655497 Scotch 207 FTW!

  • when you say you took the deck apart more do you mean removing the 4 main screws on backside where the fan is and pulled it right out of the wooden frame? i believe this is what i need as well as shown in the video it needs aid to get the pinch roller & metal part spring moving. i would like to see how yours move if you would not mind doing a short video with the head cover off if possible when going to play mode.

  • iPods ? You should have brought along your 630 and showed them what "Real Sound", sounds like. Analog audio trumps digital any day !!! iPods ?, show them your 630 and let them be dazzled by real quality, visual and audio ! It will be a cold day in hell before digital can out-do the combination of vinyl and tape !

  • Happy New Year ! We had a good party last night and my TC-630 was truly a "Stereo Center" I played some tapes of the disco hits of the late seventies and early eighties recorded on either my TC-270 or TC-399. The tapes were mostly Scotch Dynarange and you couldn't tell that the recordings were 30 years old ! They sounded as fresh as the day they were recorded. Our friends couldn't believe the sound quality of the TC-630 ! At half volume it was blasting the place and pumping out the bass !

  • @91165655497 Lucky! At our party, my uncle was using a pair of iPods. :-P

  • @91165655497 Oh, and happy new year!

  • I have just returned from Radio Hovsep with my 2 TC-630"s. Sound great ! I'm listening to my AC/DC Black Ice album recorded from vinyl onto Scotch 207 at 7 1/2 I.P.S.. The unit is plugged into my Sansui 771 stereo receiver and 1 pair of Kenwood and one pair of home made Radio Shack speakers. The Sony is in great shape. Joseph knows his stuff. He says he's been at it all his life. He works at warp speed ! Now I can listen to recorded music as it should be, on REEL TO REEL !

  • @91165655497 Terrific set up! Enjoy your new treasures!

  • I just hook up the tape deck in the same place you would normally plug in your PC speakers. I will have to look into it to see if the tone can be changed. Lots of free music on the Internet. Yes, it was fast, he must be going through some slow days and I got lucky. With all this free advertising you would think that people would be lining up outside waiting to get their equipment serviced. Reel to Reel, cassettes, turntables, stereo receivers, short wave radios, boomboxes, he repairs them all.

  • My two TC-630's are ready ! I brought them in on Friday and they are ready today on Wednesday. I'm picking them up tomorrow, just in time to ring in the new year. He must not have had too much work to fix two machines so quickly. My next mission will be to start looking for vinyl LP's to copy on tape. I know of a few places where to buy them. I've tried taping off the computer but the sound has too much treble in it.

  • @91165655497 Wow that was fast!!

There must be a control in your PC to change the bass and treble depending on the software that came with your soundcard.

  • The Akai will probably perform better than the TC-270, but I'm not sure about it being better than the TC-630. It certainly couldn't do better than the TC-399. That model had a frequency response that extended out to 25.000 hz and beyond. I wish I kept that unit. I bought that at Layton Audio in 1983 for around $700. I would have liked to have gotten my hands on the Sony TC-765 or the Teac X-10 or X-20R. Teac would have been my next choice and in fact, many parts are still available new.

  • @91165655497 I've head about Teac's parts being available VS Akai's parts which aren't.

  • I actually have 4 TC-630"s, one bought in St. Calixte, one in Varennes, one in Rawdon and the fourth one from California bought on E-Bay which I stripped down for parts. It is a risk buying these units on E-Bay as you can't see everything on a picture. The ones from St.Calixte and Rawdon are now in the shop. The one from Varennes has minor issues like a head alignment and speed stability and I will take that one in to Radio Hovsep when my budget allows. I will then have three working units.

  • @91165655497 Cool!

  • That song "Go For It" , did you get that off the Internet or from a vinyl LP ? I never heard that song before seeing your video. What have you got on top of your TC-630 ? Looks like a kettle and other kitchen ware. If you get ring marks or stains on the unit try using ArmorAll on the vinyl, works like magic ! I did own new at one time the TC-270 and the TC-399, big mistake selling those units. The 399 was a nice looking and well performing deck. I still have my TC-105 that I bought new in 1971.

  • @91165655497 It's from the LP soudtrack album of Animalympics by Graham Gouldman. I'm a fan of both 10cc (the band Gouldman played in) and Animalympics. The stuff on the TC-630 is dry, so no ring wear there. I still have my TC-270 although I only keep it for playback. In fact, I don't record much at all anymore on reel-to-reel and when I do, I use an Akai with glass heads. Performs better!

  • I bought one TC-630 for $20 and another for $30. I din't expect them to be in perfect working order at those prices. I have seen one being used at a Sugar Shack as the main source of entertainment 30 years ago. These machines have seen a lot of use as evidenced by the nicks and scuff marks in the cabinets and scratches to the faceplates from what I have seen. Where did you get your units ? Finding one in excellent condition with it's original box would be a rare find.

  • @91165655497 I have three TC-630 decks. The first one is a family handdown, totally broken, that I keep for parts. The 2nd and 3rd were bought in the 1990 at a used audio shop in Montreal, $50 for the two of them (only one had speakers) because they both have different issues. In a day and a half, I opened them up, switched parts around and made one working one (the one in the video). I was lucky! Some issues can be tough to work out, but one of them had only small issues.

  • Good luck finding a reel to reel in perfect working order in a yard or garage sale. You would have more luck winning the lottery ! Most of these machines have been neglected and almost all require attention which means spending some money. All my tapes are recorded at either 3 3/4 or at 7 1/2 I.P.S. Any machine sold at under $200 is more than likely going to require service. Machines sold on E-Bay and serviced by an expert are 200 and up. Anything under that has issues that need to be fixed.

  • @91165655497 Wow, I've been very lucky then! O.O

  • Budget or no budget, who else in this area is qualified to service these machines ? I e-mailed Sony and THEY never replied. Not a very good company at keeping their customers happy ! As for making and uploading a video I will have to see, never done that before. With 200 tapes at my disposal it makes no sense not to have at least one machine working ! As I have said before, get your machines checked out while this chap is still around. His expertise is hard to find in our area.

  • @91165655497 Sorry, I meant to say that it's cheaper to find a running reel-to-reel deck in a yard sale than getting one fixed, especiually Akai decks. Of course that takes time and patience. Plus, finding a working TC-630 is another thing. Also, if you have tapes recorded at 1 7/8 IPS, you can't do much with an Akai. They usually have 2 speeds, while Sony decks usually have 3. But the TC-630 is THE model worth most getting fixed!

  • I just got the news from Radio Hovsep, it will be close to $300 to get my 2 Sony TC-630"s back to original condition. He is stripping them down and cleaning them out. All the electronics are being checked out and they will be ready this week ! I can't believe how fast this guy works. I will have two fully functioning machines up and running for the new year. He will replace whatever parts are necessary. It's a small price to pay to have one of the best recorders ever made in working condition !

  • @91165655497 Gasp! Wow, well I'm glad you find the price to be within your budget! I hope you make a video of them when you get them back!

  • Reel To Reel ; " Go For It " !

  • My favourite tapes; anything from Scotch, Basf, Sony, Memorex. Radio Shack makes some decent tapes, can't wait to try out the RCA tapes, haven't gotten round to taping on the Shamrocks yet. I also have some Pan Canada tapes. Reel to Reel is the absolute best way of capturing music and sounds and reproducing those natural warm tones faithfully. Vinyl is making a comeback, so should Reel To Reel. I never tire of watching those reels turning, the VU meters moving and the different colored lights.

  • @91165655497 "I never tire of watching those reels turning, the VU meters moving and the different colored lights."

Same here! It's my favorite eye candy! The TC-630 is the best looking domestic deck ever!

  • Other tapes in my collection, Scotch Master and Classic,Radio Shack "Reel Tape" Memorex, Scotch 150,Sony PR-150 and SLH and Ferri-Chrome, Realistic Supertape, some Ampex, Shamrock, BASF Studio Series(formerly LH Super),and some RCA Red Seal tapes, and 2 Vintage International Electronics 2400ft. tapes. About 90% of these tapes are brand new and sealed, mostly acquired on E-Bay.Some of the tapes I bought during the Heyday of reel to reel. Must be about 200 tapes with more on the way. Happy Taping!!

  • They are both working. The VU meter problem is probably a small part(can't remember the name) had that done before for the right VU meter. On the other one it can still be used as a deck if he can't repair the amp. This guy just repaired two machines of the same model that I never heard of before. Has a Telefunken 3000 for sale at $500 as well as Akai, Roberts, and a Grundig. Also some other makes I'm unfamiliar with.If you need service, see him before too long. Don't know how long he'll be here

  • I've just returned from Radio Hovsep. On one of my TC-630's the one I use all the time, the left VU meter stopped working. The other one is a spare and on that one there is no sound coming from the speakers and the right channel record lamp doesn't work. I bought that one last year in Rawdon for $20 bucks. They will give me an answer by Tuesday when they re-open. They are closed from tonight through Monday. This guy is fast and good and the only game in town !

  • @91165655497 Good luck! I hope they can make one good working one!

  • I'm just listening to my Santana albums recorded on my Sony TC-630 using Scotch 207 at 7 1/2 I.P.S. Unbelieveable sound quality ! This machine works great with almost any tape. My other favourites are Scotch Dynarange and the Basf LH Super and LH HiFi. 40+ years old and the sound never fails to amaze me. Better than CD's because of the warm natural sound inherent to vinyl and tape. I recently bought the AC/DC Black Ice album on vinyl and recorded it on the 630. Can't hear the difference !

  • @91165655497 Excellent tape choices!

  • Yes, still in buisness. He's been there 50 years. I used to work across the street in 74-75 in a store called L&L furniture. I was there this past summer where he did a head alignment for me. I bought a rare 5 inch BASF tape in a swing open case for holding 3 tapes. He's the only person I know in the area with experience on reel to reel. He also sells some refurbished units, mostly Akai and Telefunken I think.

  • Any electronic issues you can take your unit to Radio Hovsep on Park Avenue in Montreal. He specializes in vintage equipment. He also has for sale some reel to reel recorders from Akai, repaired and working. Unfortunately he seems to be the only one in the area familiar with this type of equipment. It is not like the the states where they have centers that do a complete restoration.

  • @91165655497 I know that name. I've passed in front of that shop. Wow, still in business?

  • There is a metal arm that pulls the brake assembly away from the supply reel during playback. I was able to check my stripped down 630 to verify this. The arm was slightly bent to the right. With two needle nose pliers I straightened it enough so that the brake disengaged during playback. The whole brake assembly operates on a set of springs and it is this arm that engages or disengages the brakes. I still have a problem with mechanical noise during playback allthought the electronics are fine.

  • @91165655497 That's what's so cool about this model: most mechanical problems can be fixed. I have zero skills in electonics repair and I was able to get mine running myself. I wish you good luck with the remaining issues.

  • Great video as usual. I had a minor problem with my TC-630 but after studying it a few minutes it was easily corrected. The brake on the supply reel was engaging during play. I have bought two Scotch tape brochures on E-Bay. One is for the Dynarange series and the other is for Scotch 206 & 207. I also bought two BASF 1800 ft. Studio Series 7 inch tapes. I have never seen those in Canada, maybe they were sold here under a different name. Can't wait to try them out. Happy taping !

  • @91165655497 "The brake on the supply reel was engaging during play" Wow, never seen that! Usually, it's the other way around: brakes not engaging!

    Scotch 206 & 207 are my favorite!!

  • The grease to use is called "Phonolube" As for where you picked one up at $39.95 I'd like to know where that was. I know a shop in Montreal that does repairs but it won't be cheap. I have 3 and they all need repairs as does anything that is 40+ years old. You can't buy anything today with that kind of durability. The most common problem with these machines is lubrication and misuse by previous owners.

  • Hi Aldiakaroofus!!! this a great video and machine mate!!! thanks a lot for the post.

I've got the same Sony working perfect, but I don't have experience using reel to reel recorders. Would be possible if you can create a short video clip to show me how to record 4 tracks? I'm a musician and I want to record, bass, guitar, drums and vocals.

    I'll appreciate any help. Thanks

  • @pinkyrecords Well, It's only 2 tracks at a time, A and B sides in stereo, or just left or right side. I think it might be possible to add one instrument at a time by copying it onto the opposite channel while recording the next instrument on that same channel, but I'm not sure.

  • @aldiakaroofus

Hi! it works perfect doing what you said, I used the sound-on-sound function and it sounds fantastic, I'm in love with this machine. I'll post a video soon.

  • @pinkyrecords Cool! So glad you made it work!

  • @aldiakaroofus

I just uploaded a clip of my TC-630. Sorry for the video quality, I used my mobile phone.

  • i saw one today, have no idea if it works it was $79.99 cdn. it caught my eye but i thought too much, wow it's heavy & sweet !

  • @applejax2006 Wow, at that price, it should come totally refurbished, with a three month warranty!

  • @aldiakaroofus I ended up going back the very next day and got it for 1/2 price 39.99.

I spoke to the manager and told her I would pay full price (ya right) if it fully work so it was agreed 1/2 off.

it has some issues, does not look too major. i have not opened yet,i will post a video to show what it's doing hopefully this weekend.

  • @applejax2006 Please keep me posted when you do!

  • @aldiakaroofus i posted it up today, feel free to leave a comment & suspect what is wrong with it.

  • I'm doing some repair work on my dad's old TC-630, and I was wondering what kind of grease I should use on the FF assembly. I cleaned the old grease off with alcohol, but I'm not sure if I should use a standard silicone based grease, or something else. Thanks for you input!

  • I have a TC-630 from my dad. I've been doing some repair work to get it back up and running, and wanted to know what kind of lubricant you use for the FF assembly.

  • I have this same unit but of course it doesn't work anymore :( The amp still works though!

  • @JEEPSTR78 Hold on to it. If you find another one with different issues, you might be able to switch parts around and make one good one!

  • That is truly beautiful!! I can't wait until my 252 is in working order!

  • @sideshowtink Thank you! It's my prized possession!

  • connais-tu une place à montreal pour se procurer de la musique sur tape ? ; )

  • @phrozen3 À part eBay, je ne vois vraiment pas.

  • Most Tapes I've picked up were on Ebay. Scotch 206 and 207 my favourites since 30 years. Also BASF, picked up quite a few of those, and also 12 RCA Red Seal tapes, Memorex, Scotch Master and Classic and Dynarange , one of my all time favourites. Radio Shack Reel Tapes(high output) and many Sony's PR-150 and SLH. Also some Shamrock. About 90 % of the tapes are Brand new and sealed.

  • @91165655497 You can't beat Scotch 206 & 207!

  • What brand of tape were you using in the video ? My favourites are Scotch , Sony, and BASF

  • @91165655497 Here, I was using Scotch 176, 1.5 Mil. The reel doesn't look like a Scotch reel because I bought a lot of 5 inch reels once, barely used at a TV station, and transferred them two by two on generic ,boxed, empty 7 inch reels. I spliced them together in the middle with proper Scotch splicing tape and erased them with a bulk eraser.

  • @91165655497 Other tapes I still use include Ampex (forgot the nbr), BASF (a few), Philips (about a dozen) and my favorite: Scotch 206. I also have 2 or 3 Scotch tapes that have baby blue backing! I recently found a dozen still sealed Ampex 406 for roughly $1.35 each in a garage sale.

Worst tape in the world: Concertape! Stay away from it!!! Also avoid 0.5 MIL tape. Waaaay too thin, and it'll stretch on Akai machines because they put more tention on the tapes.

  • Just seen your video again, never tire of it especially the song "Go For It" I had a recording problem with my first tc-630 and had it repaired by a technician in Lachine. I'm not satisified with his work though. I found another in Montreal who has been repairing reel to reel for 50 years. He says they're handmade. Sony got it right with the 630. I have 2 others for repair and a buyer waiting for one of them. They sell like hotcakes on Ebay. You can't beat the quality of the Sony TC-630 !

  • Great machine, got one of of these myself, currently playing back some old Otis Redding stuff :)

  • Perfect music to give it an even cooler look! ;-)

  • Indeed, recorded from vinyl sometime in the 70's :)

  • Nice Reel! I was just given a 630D. Question: What song is that that's playing on your tape?

  • Thanks! Congrats on your recent free score!

The song is: Graham Gouldman - Go For It (from the Soundtrack of Animalympics).

  • Nice deck! I have the 640a fet reel to reel (9400(a) in japan) Very clear sound!

  • Nice one too! I've never seen that one!

  • There is a good set of repair videos on reel to reel here on youtube. I believe there is about 60 videos on reel to reel repair and restoration.

  • My 1st TC-630 from Vancouver has a 5 digit serial number 36464. The 2nd one From Winnipeg is 6 digits 119245. The one I got from California and stripped down for parts is 141999. I wonder just how many TC-630's Sony built and what was their production run ? Does 141999 mean that at least that many were made ? If so, and that's only Canada and the U.S. then perhaps there were hundreds of thousands if not millions manufactured ! There was one on Ebay brand new in the box , never used !

  • Wow, never used... I wonder in what condition it is now? How much did it go for?

  • Mine is from Vancouver, 16259. :-)

  • Video still is great after watching many times. I developed a prblem with my tc-630 and it is the pressure pad assembly that presses against the tape at the erase and record heads. Would you know where I might find this small but essential part ? I can't record on the left channel. I tried bending it in place and will do some tests, but would still like to get another one.

  • I'm afraid that, aside from glueing some felt over the worn out part, the best bet is to find a used TC-630 for parts, or eBay. I'm keeping a defective TC-366 in the shed in the hope of finding a working one in a garage sale, but using my current one for parts. Ditto my so-so condition TC-560 (works only in the reverse mode).

  • I have a 1969 TC-630 as well. I need to get replace the idler belt on it so I can start using it to record my Mars Volta-esque project band. For a long time, I used the preamp out and echo feature to replicate an echplex!

  • I hope you find the part!

  • There's an italian gentleman that sells complete refurb kits on ebay for $50 for all sorts of reel to reels if you ever need to fix yours. They include both belts, washers, spacer shims, and the pinch roller!

  • For the rubber reel holders, you might also try a product called R2 Rubber Rejuvenator by Asalco. It's sold at Addison in Montreal for $5.99. It is also good for the pinch roller and the rubber idler wheels. Happy taping !

  • I wrote down the info, thanks!

  • Wow, 1969 is the year they came out! You bought it brand new then? Lucky!

  • Have you tried the Armorall ? It does a fantastic job on the speakers and on the cabinet as well. It brings out the black nicely. I used it on the plastic parts of the faceplates especially around the VU meters. The unit from California was good only for parts, the speakers looked pretty dirty and dull but the Armorall restored them to like new condition.I have been getting a lot of Brand New tapes from Ebay, mostly Scotch.

  • Not yet. I don't have any Armor All and I am busy with midtemrs right now.

  • Try using Armorall on the reel holders. it does wonders on rubber and vinyl. Otherwise you will have to fabricate them out of some rubber somewhere. As for spare parts, those are available but hard to find. There is a guy in the U.S. that will re-rubber your pinch rollers and idlers for $50 U.S. each. I got my TC-630 from California yesterday, but decided to use it for parts. The case had multiple damages, rubber feet were missing at the bottom rear. Some people don't know how to take care.

  • Would you know what type of lamps are needed in the 630 ? pilot and VU meter ? I just received my 3rd. TC-630 today. I won it on Ebay. I already have a buyer for the 630 I picked up on the weekend. It will need a bit more work and some new lights before I can sell it. It's a friend at work who's interested. I have a picture of the Sony TC-630 posted at my work station. It has made an impression with a few people, including the prospective buyer !

  • I'm afraid I don't know about the lamps, or any replacement parts for that matter. In fact, I'm very interested in purchasing a pair of vintage rubber reel holders because mine are drying up.

  • I have a unit and would like to find some reels Mahalo rafael

  • There are lots of blank reels on eBay. Do a search for "reel to reel tape blank". Myself, I find some in garage sales. Just a few weeks ago I found a dozen sealed Ampex reels for $1 each!

  • I grew up with this reel to reel unit. Now lying around gathering dust but works perfectly and in excellent condition. What do you think it would be worth? Unfortunately I'm in Australia so postage would be huge!

  • Hard to say, but if you have an eBay account, try selling it. I've seen some go up to $100.

  • I got the Tc-630 yesterday for $30 bucks. The motor looked dead as the guy said, but when I took it home and took it apart and played with the motor it came to life. It just needed some cleaning and oiling ! It needs some new lights and a bit more work, but it plays my tapes after being inactive for 20 years ! These machines were built to last. You can't say that about today's electronics. There aren't many things "Made In Japan" these days !

  • True tanks indeed!

  • I still like your video very much ! I'm on my way to pick up my 3rd. TC-630 tomorrow. The owner who had it passed down from a relative says it doesn't work mechanically. Probably needs cleaning and re-greasing. The other one is coming from California, got it on Ebay. My nephew plays in a rock band and was blown away by the sound the 630 produces ! Wants one for recording the band for later transfer to CD and computer. I had to wait 40 years for a TC-630, and now I have three of them.

  • Way to go!

  • My computer sounds a hundred times better including your video when routed through the TC-630. Way to go Sony !

  • I've just downloaded the song "Go For It" by Graham Gouldman from the Internet directly onto my TC-630 and the sound is out of this world ! Unbelieveable ! Reel to Reel Forever !

  • Yay!

  • Fantastic Machine ! I'm listening to Cat Stevens on mine right now. I'm going back to vinyl and tape, back to my roots. The TC-630 , The Holy Grail of Reel to Reels !

  • That noise suppress feature was being used before anyone ever heard of Dolby. I wonder why Sony didn't include it in every model ? It wasn't in the TC-399 which I had for a couple of years. Good deck , but the built-in amplifiers , speakers, and complete control of the sound sets the TC-630 apart from all other models. I've looked at many different Sony models as well as other brands, but the TC-630 has to be one of the best looking and well thought out model around !

  • I know about the weight, back in 1970 at High School in Montreal a teacher asked me to carry in this black box he had. It was heavy. When he opened it up in class, that was the first time I saw one. I was infatuated with reel to reel ever since. "Old School". Got my TC-630 this past Christmas. Would like to get my hands on another one. It sounds better than my CD's !

  • It has a great sound. Its noise filter is better than modern Dolby B filters!

  • What store sold them to you ? Any chance they'll have more ? A very popular model, their best ! Very few for sale as far as I can see.

  • I bought them in a used audio shop in Montreal, over a decade ago. They won't have more. I've seen one in a garage sale once but it was in bad shape. Ebay is another possibility but be prepared to pay a fortune on shipping. It's a heavy deck!

  • good video, great machine ! my plastic side panels or trim are breaking at the screws. Any spares ?

  • Thanks!

I'm afraid not, not at the moment. I wish I could have helped. Myself I'm looking for a pair of vintage reel holders. Mine are drying out.

  • Have bought one recently. do you have spare plastic side panels ?

  • Oh,and i forgot to tell you something:you thread the tape SO FAST!AND very good job at making one working out of two!

  • Thanks on both accounts! ^.^

  • What a NICE SONY recorder! I also like the song! I like it,nice fetures!

  • Thanks! It's Sony's coolest model!

  • Ah such good memories! I remember falling in love with the Echo and SOS (Sound-On-Sound)

  • I got hours of fun with that echo when I was a teen (on a previous deck I now keep for parts).

  • This video and that deck are simplay awesome! Also that song is awesome!!!

  • Wow, thank you! This is the model that made me fall in love with reel-to-reels when I was very young. The song is "Go For It" by Graham Gouldman (of the band 10cc) from the soundtrack album Animalympics.

  • I have the TC 630D (without the amp) that I bought new when I was stationed in Taiwan in '69. Still have it, works great but it could probably sound better with new heads and pads.

  • I have never stumbled on the D version so far, is it more scarce? Did it come with a dust cover?

  • Did you try cleaning the heads?

  • Janus1932 I got one of those TC630 R2R taperecorders, great machine. Also I have the operation manual and could make a copy if you require it. Regards Raymond

  • How much was it? And better get it quick before someone else buys it!!

  • It's a pretty straight-forward deck. If you have any questions about operating it, just ask. :)

  • The only place I can think of is eBay.

  • brao bel el registrator a bobine

  • Merci! Thank you! Grazie!

  • Beautiful reel to reel!.

  • Thank you! It's the "Chevy '57" of reel-to-reels!

  • Thanks! Lemme know if and when you make & upload vids of your reel-to-reel decks!

  • AWESOME DECK!!

  • Thanks! I'm surprised you don't have this model yet. It was very popular. I think it's a classic. Sexiest domestic reel-to-reel deck ever!
