I know I could never thrash like that I never would have found this if I hadn't of just watched sling blade and thought I heard adam jones (like rezner on social network) total surprise the guy has skill but I noticed "improvisation" But listen to tool's triad on lateralus I'm guessing a poor choice of words good artist, good freestyle cover?
That has got to be one of the ugliest guitar tones EVER. And he plays it like electric guitars were always supposed to sound that way.
Awesome.
Lanois is one of those guys (so is Bruce Springsteen) that needs to gobble a buttload of testosterone and make a "shut up and play yer guitar" album before they die.
Wow, Wow,Wow ~ I am completely impressed with your musical genius. Soul dude, This is a transcending piece of art ~ captured by a human heart. Fantastic!
Fantastic. I have this on videotape somewhere. I would love to see this posted in an HQ or HD version in order to have even better sound. I remember it had an even more awesome sound - crisper and more dynamic range.
@poptophop I have it on a Best of Sessions at West 54th St. DVD. The sound was really well mixed for the DVD. It's also got some other kick ass performances from Ani DiFranco, Sinead O'Connor, Richard Thompson and a bunch more.
@GEgloff - I finally dug up my old videotape with this on Sessions. A little glitchy now years later (old tape) but still kicks ass in its wide dynamic range. I had fun playing around with equalizer settings while listening to this Youtube video. Amazing amount of layering going on for this live session. I recommend trying out the many preset equalizer choices in PC audio settings. They easily make this Youtube video sound better than the videotape.
i knew that lanois was good from listening to time out of mind, but this is ridiculous. that guitar tone is godly and his playing is out of this world.
Never heard of Lanois before, but searched Slingblade for this cut. For me it's the singularly most powerful piece I have ever heard. Makes Metalica sound like a hollywood band.
incredible. So that's what a homicidal mental case hears while he sharpens his lawn mower blade? Sounds like what I hear while I'm at work... ALL DAY LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sound you're hearing is a pedal called a Kay Fuzztone. They were very cheap but good sounding pedals that are no longer sold. The fuzztone pedal was orange, hence the "Orange Kay" title.
No problem. :) However, the schematic is on the net. And funny enough, the schematic is printed inside of the original kay fuzztones. Also, it was so cheap it could be bought at JC Penney back in the day. ;)
@vuduegg - If you get the collector's edition DVD (or Director's cut, or whatever it's called), there's a whole section about Daniel Lanois in the special features. He did all the steel guitar work in the soundtrack too. That DVD came out at about the time I had been using the film in classes for 5-6 years, so I had graded a few thousand student essays and lectured on it more times than I can recall. Great film; great soundtrack.
Long live Dan Lanois . THis is gibson at its best....I just love the sound of an older les paul
for a truly good sound try the 1979 les paul I think they only made a few hundred and then said the metallic paint caused a rare tone but if you like tool Adam Jones records almost exclusivly with his 1979
Yeah! I dig it. Have a heapin' helpin' of fuzz via Les Paul with P90s! Lanois says he does not use pedals much, btw, his sound is via fingers, amp (dial up reverb/vibrato). check out his new movie Here Is What is.
Dude! Tool totally ripped this guy off!!!
