  • That was epic!! If I had to use one of those things, I would kill myself and half the band trying to spin it. :) however, when you march, your knees seem straighten a bit too much through your step. The knee should always be just a tad bit as to make your step as smooth as possible. Feet rolling looked great! Awesome job! :)

  • I wanna learn the cane walk so bad :[. And also would she get points taken off for not extending all the way up in parades since she sisnt a scottish drum major?

  • Usually yes, not fully extending would affect your score. This is just a bad habit she had that was kind of hard to fix because she was already used to beating time like that. The way she beats time in the video is actually like Military Band style, not American Marching Band style. AMB style would have full extention that you mentioned while MB (like Scottish/British) is a little more relaxed. However AMB style is more appropriate for street competitions.

  • That is really good spinning. o.O

  • The Band Director added that Half time march in the middle because it was a way to help boost showmanship scores

  • LOL.. did NOT expect to see color guard running down the sides. XD Love it.

  • woot!!!!!!!GO SARAH!!!!!! YEUH!!!!

no soutes in this one huh???lol*inside jokes*

    ahhh i miss it!

  • Not bad, but I thought it could have been more crisp, was this early in the season?

  • Want to be our HS's drum major?

Your brass can join, too. xP

  • OH MY! i think i just lost one of my eyeballs... BRAVO!!!!!

  • This is a really cool presentation from this band. I dig the change to half time in the middle. The drum major puts a lot of effort into her routine and I think her deportment is solid and especially consistent with the free arm during the beating of time.

  • This girl has skills!

  • aww thank you! =)

  • haha im so famous! thats arty for posting this. i should be appearing on the ellen show very soon showing off my skills. she just needs to call me back!

  • You must come from a VERY traditional marching band style. You are correct (kind of). In American military style of drum major, the mace is only used for signals. Spinning the mace is actually an Irish/Scottish tradition. In NCBA band reviews, spinning the mace is a way for a drum major to earn judge points in parade. The more complicated the routien, the more points they get.

  • Artemus, you and I both know that that last statement is not true. It can be complex as hell, but if it's not clean, there won't be a very large addition of points.

  • Thankyou for reminding me, *smacks self in face*. I forgot to mention Cleanliness of the routine also is a major part earning points in parade.

  • My band doesn't do any of that spinning stuff. and yea, I kind of did notice the spinning is from Irish/Scottish

  • whats thats song called???

  • "Washington Grays"

  • thanks :]

  • You know what I noticed? I know I commented on the whistle, but in a parade, and you need to halt all of a sudden, what are you suppose to do, cause the DM does not have his/her whistle.

  • If you are talking about the halt in the middle of the march, they rehearsed that into the routine. Now if you absolutely need to stop the band in parade competition (which is rare(ex: Granada HS 05, had to stop to let an ambulance through)you would simply stop what you're doing, put your whistle in your mouth, and signal the band to halt.

  • You guys rocked at Fairfiel September 17, 2007. Rosemont Represent!!

  • shut up she did great! :)

  • I noticed that you have some really great upper body control. your shoulders hardly moved at all! You have great military precision inall your moves. your helecopter has a really smooth transition. and finally I just love your star march that you do. it is totally gangster!

  • Really cool!

  • she was gettin it...i luv female drum majors! (no homo lol)

  • Does it say "Donuts 2006"?

  • What are you talking about?

  • On the asphalt at around 2:17-2:21.

  • Yes it does, the Seniors the year before do paintings on the ground.

  • Thanks for the comments. I tried to talk her out of the toss at the step-off. To me it looked out of place. But She insisted that she really wanted to put a toss in there. And (sorry sarah for saying this) the mace isn't heavy for her, it's just really long. She never got it shortened.

  • It looks like she forgot to take out her whistle when she was done

  • I know what you mean. She actually was supposed to take it out during beating of time, but the way she did it looked rushed.

  • Do you guys have small hats? I can't do anything on the horizontal plane above my head because of my bands bulky has and tall plumes.

  • For a while the drum majors wore shakos. They were hard to manuver in. I think I was the last drum major to wear a huge hat (Scottish Feather Bonnet). The Drum Majors now wear Berets.

  • Not where I live, at least 30 bands in the area still wear shakos, including me.

  • Whats this song?

  • Whats the name of this song? I like it alot

  • "Washington Grays" by Claudio S. Grafulla

  • Whats the name of this song? I like it alot

  • Yea, thats true, but I don't really like the way it looks, lol. The big baton looks more badass, lol. Our drum majors don't even do that many tricks with the batons, so thats prolly why I'm not likeing the small baton.

But yea, great job on the drum major position, great sighn of leadership over here in Minnesota.

  • Wow, I can't even get three rifle tosses in a row. You are very good.

  • I like the long mace more than the regular short mace, you can do so much more with the long one

  • That "long mace" is actually a standard mace. The "short mace" you refer to is probably the military baton. I have to disagree with you; since the military baton is shorter you can actually do alot more intricate manuvers like passing the baton between the legs.

  • in mississippi some drum majors, such as me, use mace...its an optional thing...most male drum majors here use mace...and a few females use it...but the moves we do are a lot more complicated thant wut i see from the west coast mace spinners

  • Well you guys are mostly field Drum Majors (Which I wish the DM's here on the west coast would do), so you are able to do all kinds of drill while spinning your mace. We on the west coast don't do that. Our DM's concentrate more on cleanliness, so we're restricted.

  • o ok....i wasn't sure! because every drum major i saw from cali appeared to do the same exact thing

  • What kind of mace is tht?

  • A regular Peacock American Mace (White Shaft, Chrome head and Furrel)

  • (i meant in the description)

  • i'm center guide in da front, yEE!

Mighty Tromboners! n mr arty, how could misspell our sarah white's name!?

(n the occasional terrible trombone notes arent my fault! we have many newbies)

    lol

  • Hey backoffyou. To answer your question, no, not all school bands on the west coast use maces. A good percentage of drum majors use Military batons; some are corps style.

  • wow!
