  • What a piece of work is a man - words from SHAKESPEARE "Hamlet" - brilliant adaptation

  • I memorized the songs on this amazing album and read the book (play) when I was nine (with my parents' approval). The first part of this song is from Shakespeare, and the lyrics are beautiful set to the music. Unfortunately, most of the second part (Walking in Space) is missing ..... (oh my god, your skin is soft, I love your face.........how dare they try to end this beauty.......walking in space, we find the purpose of peace......OUR EYES OPEN, our eyes are open, our EYES ARE OPEN. 4 Glenn

  • After all these years this shit still sends shivers up my spine.

  • It's Shakespeare.

  • The epitome of irony - at last year's Drum Corps International Championships, the official Comandant's own Marine Drum and Bugle Corps played a medley of songs from "Hair"!

  • ronny dyson great voice(Aquarius), from hamlet's soliloquy

  • This is my favorite song on the Hair sountrack even tough all of the song are unique in their own way this stands out in it's own way.

  • I wonder if Galt got his idea for the melody from the second movement of Brahms's Third Symphony (Shakespeare + Brahms: not a bad team, that).

  • @fartsygloss In high school, we put this musical on and our opening night Bush "unofficially" declared war with Afghanistan. I'm from Chicago and there was a protest rally on a larger expressway called Lake Shore Drive. We had to post-pone our presentation for at least an hour, when we realized that some of our audience members were probably caught in that traffic. It made for a really powerful opening and an amazing post-show discussion.

  • Sung by Ronnie Dyson and Walter Harris from the original 1968 Broadway production. The best version ever. Black boy, White boy dressed in pure white turtle neck sweaters. Very visually powerful.

  • I'm probably going to be hated for this, but I wish the show wasn't revived. It was perfect in the 60s. It was absolutely perfect. I feel like it's a gimmick now. I was in a production of it and it all seemed so shallow, all of the people my age listening to the revival because it "sounded prettier" than the original. As if it was supposed to sound pretty.

  • @RennieBee It was revived to take us back to innocence before it was all robbed from us.

  • @RennieBee it shouldn't have to sound pretty but don't dis the revival.

  • Thanks for posting this album! Takes me back to youth raised by hippy. Love the music, didn't have a clue what it meant.

  • I didnt realize this was The Bard either!

  • pure genius, shakespeare

  • love this song, my eyes have been open for decades now and I thank God I was raised in the 60s, amazing time to be alive.

  • I didn't realise that this song quotes Hamlet until I saw Hamlet. It was such a revelation.

  • i love song

  • To Even Have The Artistry To Turn This Into A Melody!! GENIUS!!!! I Have Each Line Tattooed On My Back in English,Arabic,Spanish,Japanese,French,Italian, And Russian.... It's So Prolific And True...." The Beauty Of The World, The Paragon Of Animals!!? Ooooh.. My heart Pounds!! Thank U For The Post!! .....J

  • I found this record in my dad's collection when I was 14. It's always been a favorite of mine. I'm 27, now. (thanks dad)

  • withnail

  • Actually my friend.

It is Shakespeare. Hamlet. Act II Scene II.

  • My favorite song from Hair.

     Thanks William.

  • P.S. We are listening to my record album. Came online to get lyrics for her.

  • I'm 55 and sharing this with my 22 yr old daughter. Memories, how great!

  • This was Ronny Dyson who also sang Aquarius in the original Broadway production before the song was given to the character Dione. I don't recall the other cast member's name from this duet. but it was a totally appropos Black and White pair. I remember seeing this in 1969 too. They were both wearing white pull over sweaters turtleneck sweaters, which seemed so out of touch with the rest of the costumes, but was so well planned.

  • SAw this on Broadway in 1969

  • i was really surprised that this was not revived & on the road for the past several years, given the parallels of the destruction & futility of both wars. it really is a masterpiece.

  • It's on Broadway now.

  • I Wore The Grooves Out On This Album.. YES!!..... ALBUM!!! Pure Greatness....

    OUR EYES R OPEN!!!

  • I wore out my 8-track!

  • I wore out my microcassette!

  • timeless..

  • Still timely after all these years. Bravo to Ragni, Rado and MacDermot. Thanks for the music, Swordmaster.

  • This is my favorite song from "Hair". Me and my best friend Derrick used to sing this song together while sitting around the house and dreaming about our futures. He's gone now. I miss you baby brother. Thank you for posting this.

  • @funfan10011 I just teared up...that is so sweet! I am so sorry for your loss!

  • The best song in "Hair", to me.

  • Withnail's version is better...

  • My God! Shakespeare could have written this!

    What? He DID?

  • You're very funny!

  • So fresh. Beautiful! Thank you.
