If you doubt Surefire's quality/ or think they are too expensive, read the customer reviews on their site. So many examples of the quality of light they make
This is a tactical defensive light! You want it to shine on its brightest on first click! This is a weapon, not for reading and doing household chores
I got a 9an commander on special for 200.00 Now they are discontinued and no more bulbs or batteries will be made. have to throw it in the trash. Now I use Pelican 8060, costs much less and works just fine.
@weltenbummler82 oh, and the "preaching to the chior" is just an expression, and it means "i agree with you" when you said that there are cheaper lights that can be had if i want less lumens. maybe its just an American saying?
not sure why you are getting so defensive? I initially just commented because you said in your video that you werent sure why surefire made the brighter output come on first, so i explained why.
Im also not sure why you think i have no experience with surefire, or why you think i hate sure. i actually own 3 surefires. like i said, thats what i used on extended missions in iraq, so i have plenty of experience with them. I got my first surefire over 10 years ago.
I love mine, New ones are rated at 200 lumens. They are more likely 250 to 300 on fresh batteries, 200 once the batteries are run in.
The only thing about this light, it was designed to inflict pain when used to defend yourself, so it reminds you of that as you carry it, it continually reminds you that it is a jagged edged object in your pants pocket. The person carrying it gets just as beat up over the course of 6 months of everyday carry as the person who you beat up with it in a fight.
@weltenbummler82 You are preaching to the chior. I *DO* have a 3 lumen flashlight for much less than a surefire costs. While I do own a couple of Surefire's, I am not here promoting surefire's, so not sure what your point is. I also enjoy other brands of flashlights. In fact, in my initial post, I never even SAID that I owned a surefire, you were just assuming i was talking about a surefire.
@weltenbummler82 Who said i assumed anything about toughness? Now you are putting words in my mouth (and assuming, again). And, as a matter or fact, I dont even carry my surefire lights. I carry a 4sevens Preon 1 on my keychain. I got the Surefire's when I went to Iraq, because my choices in Iraq on the Base were very limited. Once I came home, the Surefire's were too heavy/large for my taste for an EDC light.
Surefire fanboys are like Apple fanboys. Surefires were good before, but compared to the competition these days, Surefires are both overpriced and underpowered.
Example: Olight M20S-S2 has: 340lumens max (4 hour runtime), 600 hour runtime max (5 lumens), strike bezel, 4different modes (including strobe mode), accepts 18650 rechargeable batteries, and can withstand a 12 gauge shotgun shot + fall from 3rd story floor. All that for $90.
Can the Surefire E2DL ($170) match those specs? Nope.
Surefire haters are just like foreign car buyers.. they placate themselves that their decision is 'thrifty' at the same time they ignore the loss of US jobs or the fact that US companies deveelp the tech that their ‘favorites’ rip off..
buy everything overseas and the US companies (that employ US workers) will go away.. great plan
Save a few bucks now, screw what the results might be
So, I'm supposed to support a company's inferior products compared to their competition just because they're manufactured in a certain country? Makes sense.. /sarcasm. Instead of relying on pity, these US companies should get with the program and realize their foreign rivals are beating them in quality AND cost.
Also, try giving the same argument to foreign consumers. They won't give a crap whether a flashlight is made in the US or not. The US isn't the center of the world.
What a mature and informative channel you're running here.
The facts are on the table. You've just obviously failed to do any of the research. You can talk all the trash you want about those "cheap" Chinese "rip-offs", but at the end of the day, your Surefires still manage to lose to foreign flashlights in every measurable category.
You're obviously a blind fanboy who's riding the "AMERICA = NUMBER 1" bandwagon. Understand this: America's great, just not at everything.
@weltenbummler82 You're assuming that everybody *wants* a brighter flashlight. Brighter is not always better for every application. I prefer dimmer lights that do not ruin my nightvision. The only time I want the brightest light possible would be on a search light of sorts. Otherwise, I like the 3 lumen mode the best on my flashlight.
@weltenbummler82 You're assuming that everybody *wants* a brighter flashlight. Brighter is not always better for every application. I prefer dimmer lights that do not ruin my nightvision. the website says it's 200 lumens. mine has been dropped on countless surfaces (in one instance it broke the floor it landed on) and still works like new. my only concern is that their pocket clips get really loose, and are a bit short, and not very strong. other than that, amazing flashlight.
Buying a Surefire light is like buying an American made tv. I always try to buy American, but when it comes to electronics, it just doesn't make sense. The technology is just to far behind. Thats just the honest truth. 120 lumins sucks.
Its like buying a fancy car with no engine. I am not a Surefire hater, they just don't perform.
The LED is terrible! It doesn't matter how heavy duty the outside is.
It is bright first because you may need to use it in self defense, 120 lumens to the eyes is good enough to blind you for a couple of seconds. Giving you time to hit them, draw a gun or knife or flee.
Hi! Could someone tell me if the on/off switch is metal or rubber like on my mag lite? Because the rubber on my maglite is starting to break apart. Thank you
@bsx80 SF provides lifetime warranty. Their switches are rubber, but they are very durable. I own a G2 LED and a 6P LED, and they are the most well built lights I have ever used.
My brother just gave me this exact model as a gift. You have to see it to believe it. It's SOOOOOOO bright. The low 5 lumens setting is good for most stuff, I would think. I just got it this afternoon, so I have yet to put it to actual use. My 2 D cell Maglite is a joke compared to this SureFire.
You obviously didn't do your research. My "cheaper" Chinese light outclasses your Surefire in every category possible -- including, yes, build quality. Have fun paying twice the cost for an underpowered Surefire.
Expensive YES overpriced NO, (quality costs) they're even more expensive this side of the Atlantic, This reviewer says only criticism is low power first. As this torch (flashlight) is a defender. would you purchase a gun that automatically fires a warning shot first. No you want it to do the job.
I bought this light about a year ago if I remember correctly, and I lost it!I bought another the next day!If you need a light and use it everyday, this is the light. Its worth every penny.
nutnfancy does great reviews on Fenix torches. Surefire sure is expensive but good quality. I have used several Fenix products and am equally impressed with regards to output, run time and durability.
surefire is overpriced felix lights give the same power with the same different modes for a lower price im not saying low like walmart low but a good amount lower and if you look on The Find(dot) com you can find almost anything for a lower price since that site look at different sites that sell the same product at different sale marks
@GearBuyersGuide Okay, I have no qualms about Surefire lights at all. However I personally think that their pricing is slightly 'outdated' as there are many lights which are of a relatively similar quality that are much more competitively priced. For your information, Fenix lights are not just some 'Chinese-made' copy of Surefire. If you seriously consider Fenix lights to be of a substandard quality, I suggest you pick one up and try it out. Maybe the LD20?
@Evak103 Im sure they offer the same light however does it have a strike bezel on it? And can that same light withstand a good beating Ie being throw off and second story building withstand the force of impact from a bad fall clearing rooms or jump etc cause most if not all surefire lights Ive come in contact with can hence why most have mil/LE have contracts with the company. You get what your paying for Im sure however theyres alternative competitor out there though.
prove that, any dingus can say words, do something to prove it or your just another one sitting there pissed off at stuff and shaking your fist in the air at it
You will find that defensive lights and weapon lights start off on the strong power to blind your assailant whereas something like the HL1-A-TN helmet lights scroll from dimmest to brightest as they are designed to be used in tactical situations where light discipline is important to not give away your position to the enemy.
P.S. The 2010 model of the E2D-L is now 200 Lumens!
I heard that SF now made in China (from the hi-end, better QC factory). Is this true ? What models are still made in USA ? I collect quality USA flashlights. Tks for input.
I have fenix -Jetbeam -Nitecore- etc and the E2DL has a better beam and is brighter the TIR optic makes a big difference gathering light and smoothing out the beam. However I will say that a surefire with a new XPG-R5 is quite impressive in a Millenium C2 especially when its driven at 1.4A So guys dont hesitate to get the E2DL it is a fantastic small light which will also run on a 17670 and RCR123 batteries.
Just bought a mini maglite LED which cost me a grand total of 20$ . Oh yeah, it doesn't requires special batteries either. And the best part is that it's just a flashlight you know, it doesn't pretend to be a medieval torture implement. But what do I know...
@alleztouschier thats cool I do the same however the mini mags have failed me on several occasions they are pretty awesome though for 20 bucks but I would stake my life on it.
The reason the use the high setting first is... say you have an attacker in a dark alley way, and you annoy him with a dull 5 lumens, then cycle to the brighter 120 lumens.
This has been discussed and candlepowerforums, it turns out that the 120 lumen version put out 200 lumens when it was measured in an ingrating sphere. I personally called surefire on this issue and they said nothing including the LED emitter has changed. Long story short surefire changed the way it rates lumens to compete with import companies such as fenix. I have both the 120 lumen and "200 lumen" version and cannot tell any discernible difference between brightness
Thats the old version. I just bought a new E2DL-BK and its 200 lumens.
dont buy the 120 lumen model. The newer one is badass. I shine it out my window at night and it can light up road signs almost 1/4 mile away. Not bad for a flashlight that fits in your pocket
The older models of the E2D LED Defender were sold as "120 Lumens" but were later changed to packaging which said "200 Lumens." Even though they said 120, they were still 200 lumens, according to SureFire.
I believe this was because SureFire underrates their lights, etc...
you probably know by now, but the reason it starts out in the brightest mode is because it is designed as defencive tool. it is meant to blind or at least disrupt an opponent. in a situation like that you dont want first start out with the weaker power and switch to higher power (by this time your opponent has already covered his eyes) you want all the light you can get to blind or break the nightvision of your opponent then either escape or attack with the initiative you just gained.
EXACTLY! This is a defensive tool - and a damn good one! I was amazed at how bright this little light is - it will totally leave an attacker blinded long enough for you to either counter his/her attack, or just get away. The front of the light is also designed to be used as a stabbing weapon if need be. Again, you will be AMAZED at how bright this light is! You truly have to experience it to belive it! Semper fi
I really like the 5 lumen mode, the problem with a tactical light is that you always end up using it for every day stuff and it kills the batteries. The strike bezel is a plus too in case I ever have to perform a tactical trepanation on some ruffian.
I'm planning to get a surefire LX2, E1L or E1B, but I'm not rich. First, you spend a fortune on a flashlight, and now you have to spend another fortune on batteries.. Their battery aren't cheap man. It's like money being tossed away.. Do surefire sell rechargeable batteries? Why are these flashlight soooooo god damn expensive along with the ugly batteries.
All I wanted was a cheap flashlight, but for some reason these surefires really attracts me, and my brain is telling me to get one. I can't afford it man. STOP TELLING ME TO GET ONE.
these flashlights are not designed for just every day around the house use, thats what a plain rechargeable is for. what these are made for is police and military work, tactical operations, every day carry to be ready for any situation. CR123 batteries keep have over a 10 year shelf life, put a surefire in your glove box, 6 years later if you get in a pinch and need it, it will work flawlessly. I am USAF SF and I have trusted Surefire for 10 years, and I trust their quality with my life.
Does your light start flashing when the batteries are dead or does it dim. reason im asking is because I have a surefire light and it just started flashing for the first time and I don't know if its damaged or if the batteries are dead. I have a led Surefire 618 LFG weapon light.
I ordered my first Surefire one week ago, I'm still waiting for delivery, hope tomorrow. I've several other flashlights - from various brands as Fenix, Jetbeam or Eagletac - but I heard that SF is particulary sturdy & powerful, especially that their lumen rating is very conservative, not like the "chinese lumens" of the other brands I own, except Eagletac wich is american. I purchased the new LX2 from SF, I'm so curious to make a comparison with my others models in the same grade.
just received it today! i am very happy with it . Sadly i dropped it TWICE already...-_-. one was my fault second my mom. Oh well, works perfect, yet!
I just ordered my very first surefire e2d defender from ebay :) saved 20 bucks ...can't wait since i usually walk my dog at night up a not so bright trail.

@alleztouschier thats cool I do the same however the mini mags have failed me on several occasions they are pretty awesome though for 20 bucks but I would stake my life on it.
highspeed777 1 year ago
The reason the use the high setting first is... say you have an attacker in a dark alley way, and you annoy him with a dull 5 lumens, then cycle to the brighter 120 lumens.
glock19x300 2 years ago
what about cost of the light
recon66661 2 years ago
@recon66661 $149.95
makotoni11 2 years ago
If it went to low light first it wouldn't be a tactical torch
melbournaut 2 years ago
Are you sure it's only 120/5 lumens? I just got one and it's 200/5 lumens according to the packaging and it looks like the same model and model #.
diggumsmack2 2 years ago
The LED or the Bulb version?
GearBuyersGuide 2 years ago
thats the post feb. 2009 model. they upped the lumens.
duncanbonar 2 years ago
ahh, thanks
GearBuyersGuide 2 years ago
I ordered mine yesterday night. The 200/5 lumens is the 2010 model from SureFire.
Alliance1911 2 years ago
@diggumsmack2
I have both the 120 lumen and "200 lumen" version and cannot tell any discernible difference between brightness
raptor660kid 2 years ago
Thats the old version. I just bought a new E2DL-BK and its 200 lumens.
dont buy the 120 lumen model. The newer one is badass. I shine it out my window at night and it can light up road signs almost 1/4 mile away. Not bad for a flashlight that fits in your pocket
TheAtSymbol 2 years ago
@TheAtSymbol - I totally agree with you. The 200 lumen version is hella bright. It's a very light and slim flashlight. A true pocket rocket. :)
SV1K808 2 years ago
They didn't change the light, just how they rate the lumens, the 120 lumen model puts out 200 lumens...

@diggumsmack2
The older models of the E2D LED Defender were sold as "120 Lumens" but were later changed to packaging which said "200 Lumens." Even though they said 120, they were still 200 lumens, according to SureFire.
I believe this was because SureFire underrates their lights, etc...

Ive never had a flashlight that small. Does this effect how focused the beam is for longer ranges? Thanks for the review.
Underground308 2 years ago
good question
No the small size of the surefire is deceiving they are very bright and reach quite far
GearBuyersGuide 2 years ago
The E2DL has the tightest throw of any SureFire its size.
PlaceBoInternational 2 years ago
you probably know by now, but the reason it starts out in the brightest mode is because it is designed as defencive tool. it is meant to blind or at least disrupt an opponent. in a situation like that you dont want first start out with the weaker power and switch to higher power (by this time your opponent has already covered his eyes) you want all the light you can get to blind or break the nightvision of your opponent then either escape or attack with the initiative you just gained.
scandapoodle 2 years ago
Semper fi
therobster17 2 years ago
funny thing is my light turns on low, then goes high, and I want it the other way!
manual still stays it should be the other way around though, odd.

is there a way of removing the clip ?
KINXtheELITE 2 years ago
I have never tried to remove it, so I'd have to go dig it out of the pack it's living in to find out.. I'll look next time I come accross it though
GearBuyersGuide 2 years ago
thanks for the help
KINXtheELITE 2 years ago
just remove the head, and the clip slides off
G17x300 2 years ago
thanks, good to know it's an easy thing to do
GearBuyersGuide 2 years ago
The clip is easy to remove, however the lack of it will reduce water resistance, as the pressure the clip puts onto the o-ring helps 'seal' it.
1 - Remove the head
2 - Gentle push the clip upwards, towards where the head was, along the length of the body.
Be careful when you have it loose not to accidentally push to hard and 'force' it out, as it could damage the threads.
Hope that helps. :)

thanks for the info, always good to hear from owners for the best reviews

I really like the 5 lumen mode, the problem with a tactical light is that you always end up using it for every day stuff and it kills the batteries. The strike bezel is a plus too in case I ever have to perform a tactical trepanation on some ruffian.
CountStrangulaX 2 years ago
I agree, so I started carrying a small Fenix light in my pocket for 'everyday' stuff.. this way my Surefire batteries stay crisp
GearBuyersGuide 2 years ago
I'm planning to get a surefire LX2, E1L or E1B, but I'm not rich. First, you spend a fortune on a flashlight, and now you have to spend another fortune on batteries.. Their battery aren't cheap man. It's like money being tossed away.. Do surefire sell rechargeable batteries? Why are these flashlight soooooo god damn expensive along with the ugly batteries.
lilcrazyaznboy 2 years ago
All I wanted was a cheap flashlight, but for some reason these surefires really attracts me, and my brain is telling me to get one. I can't afford it man. STOP TELLING ME TO GET ONE.
lilcrazyaznboy 2 years ago
LOL, that happens to me a lot too, from hanging around with these guys with the cool gear
GearBuyersGuide 2 years ago
these flashlights are not designed for just every day around the house use, thats what a plain rechargeable is for. what these are made for is police and military work, tactical operations, every day carry to be ready for any situation. CR123 batteries keep have over a 10 year shelf life, put a surefire in your glove box, 6 years later if you get in a pinch and need it, it will work flawlessly. I am USAF SF and I have trusted Surefire for 10 years, and I trust their quality with my life.
G17x300 2 years ago 2
very well said
GearBuyersGuide 2 years ago
Does your light start flashing when the batteries are dead or does it dim. reason im asking is because I have a surefire light and it just started flashing for the first time and I don't know if its damaged or if the batteries are dead. I have a led Surefire 618 LFG weapon light.
GOD719 2 years ago
I ordered my first Surefire one week ago, I'm still waiting for delivery, hope tomorrow. I've several other flashlights - from various brands as Fenix, Jetbeam or Eagletac - but I heard that SF is particulary sturdy & powerful, especially that their lumen rating is very conservative, not like the "chinese lumens" of the other brands I own, except Eagletac wich is american. I purchased the new LX2 from SF, I'm so curious to make a comparison with my others models in the same grade.

Oh yea, it can take more than a few drops, LOL
Glad to hear you like it
GearBuyersGuide 2 years ago
I just ordered my very first surefire e2d defender from ebay :) saved 20 bucks ...can't wait since i usually walk my dog at night up a not so bright trail.
junmae808 2 years ago
I do the same whenever I can, good light I bet you'll like it.
GearBuyersGuide 2 years ago
twice the lumens does not mean twice as bright, its about 1.5x as bright.
jjearl111 2 years ago
Great review, it comes on high first since its designed to be a self-defense light. The E2L starts at the low setting if I'm not mistaken
scope1122 2 years ago
You are right, it's 'high' first because it's designed to be tactical
