I think most comments made here arguing both sides of the euthanasia debate are by people who are sadly brainwashed. The lack of wisdom and knowledge from life is astounding..therefore I'll leave you all with a few thoughts....

Do most right to die groups support only physically impaired deaths, like when someone has cancer and is in intense pain all the time and wants to just die, or do they also support emotional suicides, like where some 20 year old guy who is in perfect health is depressed and wants to commit suicide?
This video along with some other experiences I have been going through in the past few weeks has really challenged me to re-evaluate all my beliefs on what happens after you die, including any misconceptions.
I used to be so sure about the immortality of the human soul, but after spending some serious time reading through the Bible, I'm not so sure. Here's what I know for sure: eternal life is indeed the free gift of God through His Son Yeshua (Jesus); There is a final judgement for everyone.
@cetacea64 Ignore these people they are not of our savior they are of evil supporting murder because that's what it is didn't Yahushua say scoffers will be in the end and mockers they mock us but have no idea what and who they are messing with. he is soon to return & ALL will be jugded
@cetacea64 keep your beliefs to others because that is just a horrible and disgusting hate filled comment to read seriously if your god is so selective i don't want to know him
@TheNwoRhemity dear friend, I don't even know and yet my Heavenly Father knows you intimately and with a tender and compassionate love. He loves you so much. My prayers go out to you. May you experience His everlasting love and salvation. His Peace and Shalom unto you.
@NIETZSCHEAN14 Read the story about Our Lady of Fatima. You want evidence? That's evidence. But of course you won't read it because you don't want to believe so you don't have to feel guilty about your lifestyle.
I hope to have to have the same choice when it's my time. This is moving, heartfelt, and a reminder that love is absolutely limitless and will last through the ages.

Regardless of what our religious views are, God did give us free will and they practiced that free will. It now lies between them and God. It is not our place to judge. I saw first hand the agony my uncle went through in the last weeks of his life battling lung cancer which he sadly didn't survive. I also sat by his bedside and held his hand as he took his last breath. Nobody should have to suffer if they don't want to and they should have a choice to do this. I hope that one day I will

I have the utmost respect for Don and Iris. I'm so glad that they were able to pull it off. I would make the same choice if my quality of life was so reduced or my husband's was and we both wanted to end the suffering. I just hope that the choice will be available in my state if I need it. @EforEsther allow me to disagree. they didn't have a life to live on. one was dying from cancer and the other was too old to live on they would both die miserably when their bodies and minds where too weak and old to be of any use. they didn't take their lives because they were 15 year old emos that thought life sucks. they just decided to die together a little bit earlier with some dignity left. i do agree with what you say but not on this case because as i said there wasn't much life left...
@cintainda actually they do have the right because it's their life not your gods and because your god doesn't exist in the form you think it exists. you are actually pathetic and a disgrace to the human race for believing that your life belongs to someone else. you are probably a coward and prefer to believe someone else is responsible for everything that happens in your life. you and your kind are disgusting. how about for a change you take control of your motherfucking life like they did?
@ap2844 I strongly disagree with the christian theory that life is a gift from your god and he does whatever he wants with it. wrong. life is provided by nature for we do not know if there is a god just because a bunch of stoners wrote so in some books. believing life technically belongs to some short of being that controls it is the easiest way to excuse your action and what is happening to you. lets say a friend of yours died. you would say that it was gods will so you can ease the pain...
@mjkingofpop1993 That is what i say, that it was God's will.... I dont say that we dont have a say for our actions, but that is what i believe. The hole point was for everyone to understand ad respect other people's feelings, BELIEVES and actions.
@ap2844 lets say something bad happened to you, you would say your god did it so you can learn something. if something good happened you would praise your god and you would believe he loves you. believing that a deity controls what is happening in your life, means that you don't want to take full responsibility and you cannot except that you are in no position to understand or stop some things from happening, such as the example of a close friend dying.
@ap2844 i believe that there is no such god as you mention. therefore i accept all my mortal weaknesses and i find my self responsible for every good or bad thing that i do. for things that are happening to me whether good or bad, i know them to be a simple reaction of an action me or somebody else did. choices and consequences. and i am scared for not being able to explain or stop things that i cannot control (example death of loved one) but this is life. there is no greater meaning to anything
@ap2844 i'm sorry for spamming you but i wanted you to understand my point of you before saying; what you want to do with your life and when you wanted to end is your decision and only you can say what is good and bad for you and what is correct and wrong. no god can tell you that or punish you for that. who is god to tell me i shouldn't have sex before marriege for example? in nature animals do so. we are not different we are products of nature. no god will decide for you what is right or wrong
This drug should be a personal choice after all medical options have been exhausted. No-one should have the right to deny anyone the right to seek a peaceful, dignified, less painful death simply because of others' opinions and beliefs. Neither should family members be permitted to override one's own decision to donate their organs. Surely one's own life is just that, the only possession one truly has.
@Portubed The World Health Organisation needs to understand that in this age there is a difference between suicide and euthanasia, and although that difference may be largely contextual and difficult to concretely define, most people watching this have clearly shown sympathy and believe Iris and Don deserve to make their own choice - much like people in similar situations also deserve to make their own choice.
I believe we need to live in a world where people like this have a choice.
RIP - it has brought tears to my eyes. I totally support what they have done, and acknowledge that so many live well beyond their 'use-by-date" giving themselves and their families much heartache. May they rest in peace - very brave folk.
Very courageous of them. I hope assisted suicide is legal and readily available in the USA when my time comes. I cannot understand how ANYONE would be against an individual having the legal and moral right to decide then they want to die. (Now, here come the crazies warning us that suicide will be an "epidemic" if this is legalized and that ONLY god can decide when a person dies.)
When it gets to the point of only pain, suffering, no life or dignity they absolutely should have a chose. Its not human to watch all there body organs shut down and die so slowly. Until you have a loved one going through this, dont be so fast to judge. My Daddy has terminal bowel cancer and is suffering so so much.
RIP - no more pain, no more suffering. ANYONE who is against this has never watched a loved one suffer and lose all dignity slowly dying from Cancer. Its a horrible horrible disease and NO human should have to continue to suffer the way they do. When it h
As a doctor I see patients that want this choice so often. Absolutely wonderful and empowering to all those in a similar situation. Thank you Don and Iris. We're another step closer.

This video has been posted in breach of WHO Guidelines on media reporting of suicide and runs the risk of promoting other suicides. It should be removed immediately.
‘Don’t publish photographs or suicide notes. Don’t report specific details of the method used. Highlight alternatives to suicide. Provide information on help lines and community resources. Publicize risk indicators and warning signs.’
@ptero5aur You have to consider that not everyone agrees with the established guidelines. Those guidelines were built from a perspective of saving lives as if that were intrinsically necessary/capital-G-Good. I agree that preventing *needless* suicides spurned by angst and feelings of worthlessness is a goal worth pursuing, but this is not that. This is a loving couple who chose their end - not particularly early, either - and happened to upset the status quo in the process.
@SapperK9 What exactly is "puritan" about Catholicism? I thought they were very different things. Also, different ideas of human dignity come into play here.
Love like theirs is life, both in this world and beyond...the body is merely a cage in which we suffer and who are we to judge such a decision from two loving soulmates? May they both rest in peace...
What a beautiful couple. After so many years how could you imagine living without your partner. Tears are streaming down my face when I think that they love each other so much they cannot bear to go on alone.
Thank you to Don and Iris for sharing your story. I hope when my time comes to make the same decision I will be able to go to my local pharmacy and obtain my peaceful pill. It will happen through the efforts of people like you.x
Yet fill my glass: give me one kiss: My own sweet Iris, we must die. There's somewhat in this world amiss Shall be unriddled by and by. There's somewhat flows to us in life, But more is taken quite away. Pray, Iris, pray, my darling wife, That we may die the self-same day. Adapted from Alfred, Lord Tennyson's The Miller's Daughter. A beautiful, touching, if sad parallel to Don and Iris.
I am a 32 & married for 6 years. If I am lucky to be married for over 60 years like and Iris and Don and this happened to me or my husband and this was our same choice I hope that the right is given to me without having to go across world only to have to hide it in a rabbit hole! Several people unfairly meet there ends in terrible ways that are sudden but to meet your end with your choice with such peace let it be so and as ToddBeaucouray's comment says damned be those who judge!
How wonderful that they shared their conviction and strength. I, too, am a member of several end-of-life choice groups, including Exit International. Nembutal, or other drug to end life, should be legal and available to those who have reached an intolerable stage...and, only the individual concerned can make the decision that it is time to exit.
I don´t know when it started, probably with religion, but people in the past were able to take their own lives and it was fine. I´m thinking of Socrates, Petronius and many others. Then religion came along and it was - and is - OK to kill people who think differently, as St.Dominic (god´s hound is the meaning of his name - domine cane) and his friars did methodically, but kill yourself peacefully and with no violence was against their ´merciful´god and people believed this.
I am a subscriber to Exit Int'l & agree that having the choice is the sensible, compassionate way to handle the desire to end one's life. It is disappointing that various governments in Aust have not had the balls to tackle this issue, especially when a majority support euthanasia. Why do those who are ill & suffering have to go to Mexico, or resort to other methods, when you should be able to obtain the necessary drugs legally here in Australia. RIP Don & Iris & my thoughts to their family.
I too, have joined Exit as I have an incurable disease & wish to end my life on my terms. I support what Don & Iris have done. What brave people they were. I'm sure that their families will respect their recision & love them even more for standing up for their rights to die together & in peace. Rest in peace Don & Iris.
We watched this video and were inspired by the courage of Don & Iris. They send a very strong message, and we hope that the people who make the decisions in our country sit up and take notice! It is a known fact that more than 70 % of the population of Australia would like to have the choice on such an important issue.
What a wonderfully rational act to end one's life in this way. It's a pity that it is so hard to arrange this; not a pity so much as an outrage against personal liberty enforced on us by religious delusions.
@AnaLimaLuiza Any idea how many legal hoops you need to jump thru to get Euthanasia in Europe? No, it's much simpler to do it the way Don and Iris did - in your own home. If you can get Nembutal back into Australia, then you have the means to proceed, when you are ready, and on your own terms. Because the government outlaws euthanasia, good people like Don and Iris has have to go to these ridiculous lengths. Over 70% of people support euthanasia.
What a courageous couple, may they be together wherever brave souls go. I am a member of Exit and have followed the stories of the Flounders and Angy Belecciu with much interest. My fervent wish is that our government should allow voluntary euthenasia before my time comes.
Hoping you had the peaceful death you wished for Don & Iris, I want to thank you for your courage and openness about your choice to die when you want to when life has no value for you any more. It is important to be voluntary euthanasia activists, even in your own deaths it seems. May you be well guided on your journey into other worlds, and may you rest assured that you will have left many more educated people behind who now know they have the same choice.
May you rest in peace. I wish the law would allow us all to find peace instead of suffering. My father suffered miserably for many months before he died on September 2010. My mother suffered terribly until she died of cancer suffocating to death in May 1996. God bless Don and Iris. No one should be forced to suffer. No one should be forced to use their estate by throwing it out for care at the end of life just increasing the profits of the medical/industrial complex and its executives.
@AnaLimaLuiza: Exit does not make anyone to make a trip to Mexico. Nembutal just seems to be the simplest and safest drug to use; and Exit just tries to find a way around government opposition to procuring it. Can you suggest some "painless methods with drugs that can be bought at the drugstore at the corner of every street"? I'm sure Exit would love to know about it. But again, they are legally constrained regarding how much information they may provide on such things and their preparation.
May they rest In peace together. I fully understand and respect their wishes & support their right to make this decision. I thank them for making this video which will I hope help to bring about legalisation of assisted dying.
I support Exit 100%, people should be able to make their own choices.
Bless you both, and the family, its awful that Don and Iris had to make the trip in the first place, it must have been so hard for them being ill, i agree you should be able to get this drug in your Country. I intend to do the same myself. God Bless you all.
I don't know Don and Iris but I found this incredibly moving. They are an incredibly dignified, brave, honest couple. We should all have the freedom to make this choice, if pain, unbearable health problems, take away all dignity and make it impossible to live a worthwhile life. The love they have for each other is obvious and palpable. Thanks so much for having the courage to share this very private moment.

What fine down to earth people.
Aussies consistently in polls hughly approve of pro euthanasia.
If only the feeble politicians would support the views of the voters that put them there.
Dr Nietscke said only 2 legit copies are found of his euthanasia book.
One being in Federal Australian Parliament library.
So politicians get access to a book they deny access to for their constituents!
I hope for the day Australia gets the bsaic choice for a self chosen death

@ap2844 I strongly disagree with the christian theory that life is a gift from your god and he does whatever he wants with it. wrong. life is provided by nature for we do not know if there is a god just because a bunch of stoners wrote so in some books. believing life technically belongs to some short of being that controls it is the easiest way to excuse your action and what is happening to you. lets say a friend of yours died. you would say that it was gods will so you can ease the pain...
mjkingofpop1993 10 months ago
@mjkingofpop1993 That is what i say, that it was God's will.... I dont say that we dont have a say for our actions, but that is what i believe. The hole point was for everyone to understand ad respect other people's feelings, BELIEVES and actions.
ap2844 10 months ago
@ap2844 lets say something bad happened to you, you would say your god did it so you can learn something. if something good happened you would praise your god and you would believe he loves you. believing that a deity controls what is happening in your life, means that you don't want to take full responsibility and you cannot except that you are in no position to understand or stop some things from happening, such as the example of a close friend dying.
mjkingofpop1993 10 months ago
@ap2844 i believe that there is no such god as you mention. therefore i accept all my mortal weaknesses and i find my self responsible for every good or bad thing that i do. for things that are happening to me whether good or bad, i know them to be a simple reaction of an action me or somebody else did. choices and consequences. and i am scared for not being able to explain or stop things that i cannot control (example death of loved one) but this is life. there is no greater meaning to anything
mjkingofpop1993 10 months ago
@ap2844 i'm sorry for spamming you but i wanted you to understand my point of you before saying; what you want to do with your life and when you wanted to end is your decision and only you can say what is good and bad for you and what is correct and wrong. no god can tell you that or punish you for that. who is god to tell me i shouldn't have sex before marriege for example? in nature animals do so. we are not different we are products of nature. no god will decide for you what is right or wrong
mjkingofpop1993 10 months ago
@mjkingofpop1993 its not nice tou spam me just because i dont agree with you.

Adirtybird 10 months ago
@ptero5aur You have to consider that not everyone agrees with the established guidelines. Those guidelines were built from a perspective of saving lives as if that were intrinsically necessary/capital-G-Good. I agree that preventing *needless* suicides spurned by angst and feelings of worthlessness is a goal worth pursuing, but this is not that. This is a loving couple who chose their end - not particularly early, either - and happened to upset the status quo in the process.

Nembutal, or other drug to end life, should be legal and available to those who have reached an intolerable stage...and, only the individual concerned can make the decision that it is time to exit.
pkfullagar 10 months ago
I don´t know when it started, probably with religion, but people in the past were able to take their own lives and it was fine. I´m thinking of Socrates, Petronius and many others. Then religion came along and it was - and is - OK to kill people who think differently, as St.Dominic (god´s hound is the meaning of his name - domine cane) and his friars did methodically, but kill yourself peacefully and with no violence was against their ´merciful´god and people believed this.
moticava 10 months ago
I am a subscriber to Exit Int'l & agree that having the choice is the sensible, compassionate way to handle the desire to end one's life. It is disappointing that various governments in Aust have not had the balls to tackle this issue, especially when a majority support euthanasia. Why do those who are ill & suffering have to go to Mexico, or resort to other methods, when you should be able to obtain the necessary drugs legally here in Australia. RIP Don & Iris & my thoughts to their family.
cher0752 10 months ago

When will we wake up as a society?

Don and Iris are sensible, loving people who have made a decision that we should all be entitled to make. I admire them and Dr Nitzche.
waratah55 10 months ago
@AnaLimaLuiza Any idea how many legal hoops you need to jump thru to get Euthanasia in Europe? No, it's much simpler to do it the way Don and Iris did - in your own home. If you can get Nembutal back into Australia, then you have the means to proceed, when you are ready, and on your own terms. Because the government outlaws euthanasia, good people like Don and Iris has have to go to these ridiculous lengths. Over 70% of people support euthanasia.
ankemeny 10 months ago
What a courageous couple, may they be together wherever brave souls go. I am a member of Exit and have followed the stories of the Flounders and Angy Belecciu with much interest. My fervent wish is that our government should allow voluntary euthenasia before my time comes.

Hoping you had the peaceful death you wished for Don & Iris, I want to thank you for your courage and openness about your choice to die when you want to when life has no value for you any more. It is important to be voluntary euthanasia activists, even in your own deaths it seems. May you be well guided on your journey into other worlds, and may you rest assured that you will have left many more educated people behind who now know they have the same choice.
scorpina57 10 months ago
May you rest in peace. I wish the law would allow us all to find peace instead of suffering. My father suffered miserably for many months before he died on September 2010. My mother suffered terribly until she died of cancer suffocating to death in May 1996. God bless Don and Iris. No one should be forced to suffer. No one should be forced to use their estate by throwing it out for care at the end of life just increasing the profits of the medical/industrial complex and its executives.
DrLindaShelton 10 months ago
@AnaLimaLuiza: Exit does not make anyone to make a trip to Mexico. Nembutal just seems to be the simplest and safest drug to use; and Exit just tries to find a way around government opposition to procuring it. Can you suggest some "painless methods with drugs that can be bought at the drugstore at the corner of every street"? I'm sure Exit would love to know about it. But again, they are legally constrained regarding how much information they may provide on such things and their preparation.

I don't know Don and Iris but I found this incredibly moving. They are an incredibly dignified, brave, honest couple.
