@KetsuRosataMalnor I don't think the dubs are similar at all. I can't imagine a regular person speaking in the way the dubs sound, while normal conversation sounds normal in the JP version. I think the reason is merely the cultural difference. Just like lip synching JP RPG's turns conversations awkward...

By the way, I completely agree the ridiculous parts are ridiculous, but there's a lot of "regular speech" as well.

I think the game translation problems illustrate the point pretty well: all the american console games sound perfectly normal, Solid Snake does not. You can also read about translators frustration in the FF games :P

Of course, the opposite is true too, lots of japanese folk think english translates to japanese....

@KetsuRosataMalnor another big one I notice is that you can make up words on the fly in Japanese / chinese - people are not actually saying something ridiculous like "super iron fist puncher" all the time. The chinese movie Hero was a good example: Nameless is not actually spelled nameless, but just the combination of 2 characters - one meaning empty and the other meaning name. Put the two together and it's a new word. Iron Fist, Crouching TIger, etc. lol.

@yuchant Japanese Kanji and whatever it's called in Chinese might as well call it Chinese Kanji, basically the same principal in characters, can have vast meaning and combinations of words, but Kanji is written word so I don't know if it's great use for comparing a dub, but meh, just seemed like you wanted to go off track a little, but I can see how the jump was made so it's all good. I think when learning Kanji the first things I wrote were swear words lol.
