  • is this safe to use on with a 70pound compound bow with broadheads at 320fps would it rip the fletchers off?

  • thanks for the idea, i made my own from a big heavy duty tarp and stuffed it with plastic bags i collected from my local old navy and mine has survived weather and hundreds of shots and counting. i use the tarp target as a backstop and i made another using a cardboard box and plastic bags that i use as my main target and it works great until my arrows start blowing massive holes in the back of the box.

  • I loved this video. Love the presentation. And I laughed at the leaping into the pile of plastic.

  • I dont think this will hold for my bow...

  • Go to your local super market. Ask them to save their shrink wrap that all of the pallets of groceries come on. All they do is roll it up and throw it in the trash. Them them what you are going to do with it and it is to be used by everyone in the neighborhood that shoots archery. Make a bog like you see there. Stuff it with the shrink wrap and party on...No bow, how ever powerful with the smallest diameter arrow can penetrate it more than a couple inches. It never wears out.

  • I think the best material to fill the bag up is wool. (I learn it from Trophybow1 in youtube)...but this one is good as well.

  • i am showing all of you how to make a target get a box and put all your jeans that you want to throw away you know jeans its really hard so arrow can't go throw just don't used the sharp blade arrow just used the normal one that for practice shooting

  • what about 185lbs crossbow?

  • Will this stop a Matthews MR6 60lb pull back with field tips or broad heads?????? i was wondering because my cousin has this type of bow and his penetrates mostly almost averything and its no fun so let me know :D

  • Would hay work?

  • Oh, just some advice. Make sure its filled as much as you can. Reason is because if you don't your arrows tend to "bounce" off the target.

  • Nice mother-inlaw-bag. Those vice grips are called Clamps.

  • I made it yesterday, it took half an hour and works like a charm! Thank you sooooo much!

  • I am making one TODAY! Thanks! You just saved me literaly over a hundred bucks!

  • I could listen to her speak all day long....

  • can this stop any arrow

  • @shanstershane lOl funny funny guy lol

  • ive did it and it is perfect!!! It even stops the arrows shot from my compound 60lbs!

  • What did u use to sew it together?

  • that bow cant be 45-50 pound. Are you sure it is?

  • @guitargodman99 pretty sure it is.... why do you think it isnt?

  • What kind of bow was that how much was it where can u get 1 at

  • Holy cow!

Sometimes it takes something like this to make me realize "Hey! I could use this!" I've been trying to think of what I could stuff an old TV box with. I have a few bails of hay, but I didn't want to use em just yet.

But after watching this, I know what I'm going to use. Plastic grocery bags!

    Thanks guys!

  • would a bag of chicken or goat feed stop an arrow with alot of plastic bags. or straw.

  • sorry for this: but i bet a 120# warbow + needle bodkin will go all the way through! haha :D

    nice video anyways, Cheers

  • @Olwe1992 sorry guys, I know a lot of you are convinced you can get arrows through this thing....but we've tested many more of these with 270lbs crossbows, bows of all types cheap and expensive, of all speeds, rollers, and sticks, compounds, and traditional, laminate and wood.....it just doesn't seem to matter: If you pack it tight and right, and use a target arrowhead (not broad head) it's not going through...no way, no how. Sure it has something to do with physics, but I am not a physicist.

  • @Crashed518

oh well then i guess you did a great job :)

  • would that stop an arrow from a compound?(my 70 pound mathews fx to be exact)

  • @MegaDanbo: yep. Me and my Brothers, Uncles etc, love all type of bows, we've shot tons of them at these types of targets over the last year, and they work great for just about anything if you build'em right. Just make sure you pack it tight and you can shoot arrows at it for weeks. The bow type is irrelevant, unless it's some Roman siege weapon or something.

  • @Crashed518 thanks and great idea! i think i might make one(stupid block targets cost way to much just for a peice of foam)

  • Yea note that its a recurve bow being shot not a compound cuz i know for a fact my bow will blow thru that target cant go wrong with the DXT by Mathews

  • @4mattson post a video of it, i'd like to see it.

  • @Crashed518 lol dude if i had a video camera i would you need to look up my bow obviously bag targets dont work very well its why i bought the Black Hole target when i bought the bow $40 and i shoot broad heads in without it going thru all the way

  • @Crashed518 im not saying your idea is bad or anything just saying that most compound bows shoot harder than that recurve and ill put my months salary that my bow blows thru that target at 20-30 yards...it is a money saver and a good target one of the better home made ones ive seen

  • how many shots can it take before having to redo to tarp part??

  • @TheMetalApocalipse they seem to last about a season, we shoot on the weekends.

  • does it stop the arrow from goin all the way through? because i shoot plastic fletches and i shoot at a target made out of sheet insulation and it shoots completley through and tears my fletches off

  • @Joey3110 the idea is , it's squishy...so the force from the bow is reduced as it attempts to go through....it loses all it's kinetic energy. ..which is dispersed through the squishy-ness.

  • Respond to this video... could i use cardboard

  • @petey19961 no.

  • @petey19961 u could use card board i made one today with a cardboard box and stuffed with clothes and blankets taped covered it with plastic and put a piece of display paper in ther shot at it from 10 yards worked perfectly and easy to remove if you pack a lot of stuuf in there u canuse broadheads

  • Thanks for the video, very creative and helpful !! :D

one question, what is the measurements of the tarp, would you know? thanks !!

  • @Zeeblur I think it was a 4 by 8 foot one....

  • thanks a lot for this idea. i made it exactly the same except mine is 5x5ft. it stops my arrows perfectly

  • im thinking about making one should i use sand plastic to newspaper

  • @Edge96937 Hmm Sand will dull the arrows and is pretty heavy......also on wooden arrows , I've even broken some shafts by firing them into sand. I bet Aluminum would bend....Newspaper works great though, plastic trash bags even better! As well as being light and cheap ^ ^.

  • @Crashed518 ok thanks and by the way i have regular arrows

  • @Edge96937 what do you mean by "regular" :) to me "regular" would mean wooden hickory shafts with turkey feather fletchings....to others their "regular" arrows might be aluminium shafted with plastic fletchings?

  • @Crashed518 the fiberglass ones the ones that say hunter on them but i do not have brodheads my dad said its dangerous

  • look it's a BOY!

  • Another way is to use a washing machine box, most retailers will give you them for free as it is waste to them. Nice video

  • i made as you show on the video, works very well. thanks for sharing.

  • Great idea! Do you think that stapling the edges with heavy duty staples would work as well as sewing?

  • Great idea! Do you think that stapling the edges with heavy duty staples would work as well as sewing?

  • @ymatlosz Hmm......should work just fine, though you might have to repair the edge a bit more often, but it'd be alot faster!

  • I work at a sign shop and I have alot of scrap pieces of banner material, I used your design to make me some targets and they work very well. I cut up the banner scraps then make them into balls for the stuffing...im glad i found this informative video! Thanks a bunch!

  • @RastaBot Glad we could help, happy shooting!

  • Hey just to mention guys: Speed is not the secret to hunting deer with a bow. You need enough to get penetration, but with a good broadhead it does not take a lot of speed. Quiet is what you need. The faster the bow the louder the bow, and the more critical it is to shoot. A deer can beat an arrow off the bow (jump the string) at close to 600 FPS. Go for quiet and penetration, with enough practice to make sure you can hit what you aim at.

  • Haha what kind of bow is that? Looks like a child's recurve. It's so slow!

  • @hubeda , it is a 1976 Fred Bear Stag hunter Recurve (45-55lbs), I spent many months looking for one in good shape. Designed for hunting white tail deer. It feels great to shoot, is comfortable for prolong target practice, is accurate, light, small enough to brush hunt with, dependable, and a handsome looking well made bow. They do a fine job and are a joy to shoot, I recommend you try one some time, I think you would enjoy the experience.

  • @dovessongs i've used recurves b4 but they were much larger then the one you are shooting. i would not have commented had it not seemed that at full-draw it took too long to hit the target. i am currently using a pse stinger 60-85 lb. it is super fast. though probably about the same size as your recurve. guess i'm just used to more speed.

  • @hubeda the bow only has 50% to do with your speed, the arrows I use are hand built for accurracy and duribility, not speed. They have much longer fletchings, a heavy grain field tip for repeated target shooting with no wear or tear, the shafts are hickory, very duable, but also dense and heavy. I've never found speed to be much of an issue.

  • @Crashed518 ok, fair enough. i'm guessing you don't use those arrows for hunting then? i can't imaging hitting a dear from 40 yards with that kind of speed. what grain are your field tips? do like the video just fyi. i hope to make one soon after i get moved into my new house.

  • @hubeda I don't hunt with it, when I hunt white tail I us a Ruger 243, which fires at 3200 feet per second :) I am sure the bow did fine job in the 70's judging by the extreme popularity of the bow in that time, which made Fred Bear's products nearly legendary. Though I shoot it just out of the joy and challenge of doing so. I am not a fletcher, but I believe the arrows are 25 (11/32). You'll notice the fletchings are the entire length of the brace height.

  • Cool video, your voice is pretty!

  • i,m making one using bubble rab and bin bags

  • How tight do you pack it? Should I put in as much as I can stuff it with or leave some space?

  • for some reason i want her to read me a bed-time story.. such a soothing voice=P

  • very true,

  • not alot of differnce between carbon and aluminum shafts for cross bows the big diffence is in compounds i use st.epic carbon and they sucked so i swicth to gamegetter in aluminum and drilled 2 robinhoods with them the thing in carbon bolts is that there not lighter and faster they just dont dent or bend you'll find in compund arrows not much changes ethier st.epic 400 and gamegetter 400 on my martin saber 125gr tip are 220 fps and 219 fps but redlines a target arrow 3x money i get 260 80gr

  • This looks like a good idea. I'm gonna give it a shot..(poor attempt at humor).. seriously though... I can get hay..do you think hay or plastic? or both?

I love Andy McKee btw. (background music for those of you who didnt know)

  • i think plastic, because when your target is wore out,you can just take out the plastic and re pack it again.

  • Yes. That is what I meant.

  • Just got done making one after watching the video this morning. I used a 6x8 tarp ($5), and construction plastic from a jobsite. It stands 3.5 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide. It's light weight, small, and my 325fps compound bow with carbon arrows(32 inch) penitrate 6-8 inches. The only problem I found tonight is the arrows are a BITCH to pull out. The plastic has melted to the steel field tip. However, it did save me $60, and a week of waiting for shipping. Thanks!

  • you mean the field tip melted the plastic....

  • Actually I found a better idea.

Walmart/lowes anyone who moves a lot of stock...

They fold and tightly pack lots of boxes and plastics and then load them up on a crate (in the back of the store) and sell them to the recycler.

If you talk to the manager you can buy one or two of these crates for real cheap (less than the price of a couple tarps) and they are usually 4x5

    Best/cheapest target by far :P

  • Those are great. I've made some out of 40lb dogfood bags. I've stuffed them with paper, walmart bags and clothes, pillows and other towes.

The walmart bag one held up the best and was about 1/4 the wieght of the others.

  • Made a few of these in the past .The best part about it, you can always turn the target when it gets well used or refill it .Also you wouldn't get any glare from the sun if you raped it with burlap .

  • Burlap makes a great target sack, Unfortunatly it is very difficult to find in most urban areas. Our orginal idea was to use burlap, but we searched all over...all we found was a target at a sporting good store that was already made of burlap. Of course it was about $60.00.....

  • i don't know if you have one in your area but Tractor Supply co. has them

  • I love raping things with burlap. Chafes me GOOD! . . . OH you meant WRAP! Silly me.

  • Good idea, in the past i have just duct taped foam together and taped on a target.

  • I think my arrow would go through this. I am using really tightly packed dock foam. A huge 5h x 8l x 2w brick of foam that is used to float a dock.

If the tips of my arrows are poking out of the back of that... this wont stand a chance.

That is over 300 fps from my bowtech.

The cheap foam targets from wallyworld are even more of a joke. This is a better idea than 40$ at walmart. My arrows Always go through it at any distance.

  • AS stated numerous times...over and over....this type of tareget will stop ANY arrow from ANY type of bow provided you construct it properly. Tested with high power compound bows and crossbows alike (300fps+) didn't even come close to passing through. Try it out, you'll be pleased with the results

  • The tighter you pack it, the shorter it lasts.

And you dont have to keep repeating yourself. I read you the last few times.

I just think that even tightly packed it wont be long before it starts ripping off my fletching.

  • The flechtings don't reach the target, you pull the arrows out as shown in the video. I honestly don't care what you THINK, I am telling you FACTS, wether you choose to believe them or not is between you and your Psychiatrist. If you are using broadhead arrows to practice with of course they will penetrate any regular target, that's their job. You must use a target built for broadheads if you are gonning to target shoot with them. Use field points to target shoot.

  • if u got hay for 4 bucks just shoot the damn bales get like 10 and make a small wall then spray paint a target on it

  • in my club we found fly wire works great in targets...it stops up to 60 pound shots going through and the arrows come out very easy..

  • you also could have filled with hay,I used a burlap sack and filled it with hay it prove to be an excilent target and was easy to make i ziptied it close and got about 70-90 shots out of it

  • would this be good for a 60 pound bow?

  • As stated NUMEROUS times in the coments below :) This type of target will stop ANY arrow from ANY Bow/crossbow : provided you pack it tight enough, and are not using broad head arrows. Thanks for watching!

  • well done, folks. Who says you have to spend a bunch of money to have fun?

    You folks rock!

  • this is a good idea! but if u want a smaller target just get a 50-100lb. feed sack and stuff a bunch of old clothes in it (i use jeans-more durable)then use rope or twine to close the top, and make some targets on the front of it and there u go

  • hey you guys ^-^ just wanted to thank you for your idea. about a year ago hmm maybe half a year, i started with target archery, but i didn't have a target and wasn't willing to go spend money on one. so i looked online and your idea was excellent lol hmm i stuffed mine with two bales of hay from home depot. that ran me like four dollars hmm so it wasn't so bad eh?

  • what is the pull weight on that bow?

  • AS stated in the Video :P it is a 45-55lbs Fred Bear Stag Hunter bow, with my usual draw length it's probaly firing at about 48 lbs. We have confirmed this type of target will stop any arrow from any type of bow prodided you pack it tight enough.

  • where would i get that many bags....

  • Cheap lawn and garden bags from walmart or savealot, 200 for about 6 dollars. Open them all up then stuff them in tight. You can also use rags, newspaper, old carpet, or old clothing.

  • nice video , this sort of target will stop arrows from any bow .

This womans voice is very nice and if you go to 2.46 you can hear her say 'penetrate'

    (fnar, fnar)

  • I make my own targets also, though I use rags (old close) and a brown plastic trash bag that I put pieces of tape on ....I've been using the same rags for 4 years !!!, they absorb the shots and you can pull the arrows out with the tips of two fingers, I just throw the rags in a new trash bag when I rag it out too much, I got tired of spending a $100 or more a pop for 3d targets, I do like morrel bags though, they are good for the money

  • AWESOME!!!!

  • like my fred bear lights out

  • I've made a couple of these since the first one. They will stop just about any arrow from any bow so long as you pack enough matrial into the tarp/bag. They take about half an hour to make your first one. Buy a tarp , and a few rolls of cheap lawn and garden trash bags. Open all the bags and then stuff them into the tarp/bag as shown.

  • will this be good enough for my 70 pound bows?

  • wanna sell it!?

  • great video! Excellent

  • This is a fun video, and I love that you used the stuff you had around the house. Nice job, I especially like the needle you made from a tine of the plastic fork. I watch this when I'm really missing you two, and it makes me smile :) Love, Mom

  • Nice job! Very nice job! I liked your "needle." It reminded me of primitive archers using bone and what not for tools. Another thing, never mind the wet blankets that keep talking about fps and all that. Filling it with fabric, old clothes or carpet stops plenty of high fps arrows. Kudos!

  • Thanks for the kind words! I am actualy curious how much this target can take now. We have plans to have a friend of mine with a high powered compound bow to go crazy on it!! I'll post the video soon :)

  • I enjoy my bow. I bend it for the joy of practicing traditional archery; as well as the joy using vintage Fred Bear products. I'm not much of a hunter really, so I don't really mind how long it takes my arrows to reach the target :)

Traditional archery isn't for everyone though. I just happen to like it better, personal preference, that's all.

  • ..you guys are fun..nice job..

  • Hey thats a pre good idea keep up the good work and i was wondering wut kind of arrows those were and were to get them?good work

  • 300mag?! Geez what are you hunting Rhino? Yeah, I vaguly remember you having Dad's recurve; but I don't know what happened to it either. I'll be visiting in a couple weeks so see you then.

  • i have that bow. except mine is green. and im 12 and i can pull it back and shoot it... im good with it!! =D and!!! i did this and it works great!

  • Yes, they are wonderful bows aren't they! I am still learning to use mine. Keep up the good shooting, and I am happy we could help ^^

  • Great Job Guys!!!!!!!!!!
