My mom was a big band singer, so I was raised listening to Billie and Ella and Sarah and Peggy Lee. I thought I'd heard everything Billie Holiday recorded. When Ms. Peyroux's voice first came over the radio, I was gobsmacked. It's not that she's in any way imitating Billie. That can't be done. But, no one I've ever heard has taken up that torch the way Madeleine Peyroux does. Wow.

I'm curious how many of you, or any of Peyroux's fans, are aware that she is almost a total mimic rather than an original stylist - this is a complete imitation of Billie Holiday, one of the greatest and most ORIGINAL singers of all time. Holiday was black, of course, and went through a lot of dues back in the 30's and 40's to establish herself - I find this rip off rather obscene - love Leonard Cohen's song writing though.
