Comments as 'Syd > Gilmour' disgust me. Gilmour stepped up when Syd wasn't able to sing and write anymore. Roger handled the writing and Gilmour the singing. Weird how I see comment as 'fuck gilmour, barret for lifffeee' on other vids as well. Ignorance.
@stnavres He did not say fuck Gilmour, he said Barrett is bigger than him. Nobody can say Gilmour sucks, though. He is a hell of an artist as well...in my opinion, the combination Syd-Gilmour would be like >>>>>> than Gilmour-Waters
@3ombieautopilot Impossible. Syd will never be forgotten. Not because he created Pink Floyd, but because his songwriting and musicianship is simply outstanding.
He was a unique talent. People will always listen to his music.
i love this songs they have been with me in very hard and great times, i love the detuned sound is special very special on the distant shore, i am tryiiiiiing to find you! forever syd barrett original man...
Syd was a musical genius. Syd started "The Pink Floyd" and then he was ostracized from his own band, so they legally just shorteded it to "Pink Floyd". Syd had everything people were jealous of, and he was attacked for it. Basically every song published or performed by "Pink Floyd" is about the character assination of Syd. Pink Floyd is about very sinister social concepts that excist. Syd was pshychologically injured and bullied for being of an exceptionally high order of creative genius.
@nycdarkglobe I don't think that's fair to be honest, I think his behaviour was beyond working with. If you were in a band and the lead singer was non responsive and playing one note throughout the gig then you'd probably feel that he could no longer go on. By the time he left I don't think he could have cared less about whether he was in the band or not - it was all the people around him could do to get him into the studio. I love Syd but I don't think you can blame the rest of the band.
I'm a big fan of Syd Barrett. Syd was sensitive, highly intelligent, creative and beautiful .... drugs destroyed his personality and its beauty .... his songs are immortal ...
@teddy1066 In all honesty, all of these first lyrics sound very zen in their nature. They are all basically statements of nature, or reality. My favorite is the second set of lyrics....just pure "suchness" or "thusness" to it.....kinda hard to explain, but I think I feel the same way you do. Great music, with lots of wonder :)
if you like syd's music, please check out my music! Search for Roger Delarge on facebook or youtube! Syd is my favorite artist and a huge inspiration for me! thanks ;)
With the exception of a few songs like Echoes...I like Syd's music more than the floyd's. I know Roger and David helped him produce his work, but all that said I like his music better. Just a personal opinion!
Amazing song. Syd my inspiration to play music even if it's mostly his. I also born in 1973. The release date of Dark side of the Moon. Wish I could have shook his hand. RIP Barrett!
These kind of people, like S. Barrett, in these moments of... transformation their mind explodes into million pieces, and parts of it reaches some of us like a drop in our still isolated souls. I was born 1973, and I got a drop of this bliss on my head. It is growing to that same ozean of... wonder - and i´m not on drugs right know.
Easily Syd's best song. Staggering he left it off the album and not released until the 80s. Some author had said once maybe Syd though it was TOO good and would make the other material seem weak in comparison. The outro part at 3:50 breaks me.
Yeah. did have quite a mind. Genius, indeed, highly intelligent, talented, cool ,stoned ,refined, like an opel stone embedded in the sand....Rest in peace, Syd Barrett...........
This is one of histories great sages, a messenger from a fairer place, trapped in a harsh world. While Yeats strived to understand and connect with the Fairie realm, this man was of it. Also want to say i appreciate and agree with the comments of all those here.
I fucken love this song i heard on lsd while at a lake and honestly it just blew my mind and body away. I got so lost and into the guitar strumming and the way he carries his voice. The ending of the song is really sad when he sings the final lyrics.GREAT SONG...
If you like "Effervescing Elephant" you might like "Signifying Monkey" and other old African American songs...that whole "jungle gossip" tradition came straight over on the slave ships. Syd gave it a nice British twist though.
it's almost as if you can feel through syd's voice & singing, him sincerely "trying to find" us. the chord changes are so strikingly beautiful and haunting. it either moves you or it doesn't? you've got to take it for what it is, the words I mean. it hurts my heart to hear this. the ending fade out goes on forever in my mind.

On a distant shore, miles from land
stands the ebony totem in ebony sand
a dream in a mist of gray...
on a far distant shore...
The pebble that stood alone
and driftwood lies half buried
warm shallow waters sweep shells
so the cockles shine...
Beautiful lyrics. I mean, beautiful.
