Florida State won their first 5 games (including wins against then #10 Miami and @ #17 Boston College) en route to a 7-1 start, than slipped 3 straight (to the teams I said below), won the ACC Title game, than the lost to Penn St.

Losing at home to NC State (20-15) and getting blown out at Clemson (35 to 14) and at #19 Florida (34 to 7) before beating #5 Va Tech 27-22 in the ACC Title game) isn't considered hot nor a streak. I don't know for sure if the Orange Bowl was FSU's best game.

That wasn't a red-hot FSU team. One game doesn't = peaking. They started 5-0 and 7-1, than won only one of their last 5 (against VaTech). If anything Penn State caught Florida State at their absolute worse.

They slipped by Va-Tech 27-22 to win the watered down ACC title. A semi-home crowd in Jacksonvlle helped (which was suprisingly the opposite in Miami) They lost their 3 games before that (20-15 at home to NC State, 35-14 @ Clemson [both sub-par ACC teams] and 34-7, @ Florida).

For most of the season Florida State was not on a hot streak, but at the very end they were, much like the Giants last year in the NFL. This Florida State team was at the best they were all year during one of their worst seasons. Florida State played their best game at the Orange Bowl, which combined with two Penn State injuries and a key mistake at the end of the game, made for a 3OT thriller.

Also, remember a key mistake that should have cost Penn State the game. Penn State was driving for the score to put the game away 23-13, but Robinson had an uncharachteristic fumble, Florida State recovered, drove down the field, and kicked the game tying field goal.

Remember that during this game, we had a Florida State team on a hot streak (I'm convinced they could have beaten Ohio State that night), and a Penn State team with two key injuries during the game.

They needed 3 OT's to beat a then 8-4 FSU team. This isn't the old FSU's of the 90's. They just were not that good. As much of a good game it was defensively, had either place-kicker learned how to make a kick, it wouldn't have made it to the first OT. Both missed 2 FG's (Penn State from 29 and 38 and FSU from 44 and 38) and the FSU guy missed an extra point in the 2nd quarter, which would have neglected OT had he hit it.

Two things to remember about this game:

1. Kevin Kelly was a young place kicker, he had just replaced an ineffective Robbie Gould that year, so he's naturally going to be nervous.

2. Penn State had TWO key injuries that night, Paul Pusluzney was their major defensive player, and Tony Hunt was half of the offense.

3. Florida State improved through the year. We first saw that against Virginia Tech. Had they played like that all year, they'd have been #4 going into the Orange Bowl, not #22.

2005 Penn State vs USC or Texas would have absolutely been a close game. Penn State pummelled a good Ohio State team. I know the score was 17-10, but the field was slop, so it was hard to get much going. On a clear night, Penn State might have won by a more dominant score of something like 35-17.

Any time you can go undefeated in a BCS conference, you aren't a fraud and that's what Texas and USC were. Clearly nothing wrong with the Orange Bowl cause it was a good game and all, but the bowl game (at least BCS bowl game) was USC - Texas and watch the last 6 minutes of that game or so for more on why that is. I'm not saying that USC and Texas weren't good teams. But they weren't the two "heads and shoulders" above the rest like often presented. Penn State belonged right up there with them. I know they only beat Ohio State by 7, but that was in rainy, sopping wet conditions. Ohio State's offense was toothless all night, and in fair weather it'd have been more like 31-14.

There is a difference in when Penn State played Ohio State and when Texas played Ohio State....from 100,000 white-clad fans in Happy Valley to 100,000 fans in scarlet and grey. So yes, while Penn State played better than Texas against Ohio State, keep in mind home field.

Plus USC's biggest struggle was a 3 pt win @ Notre Dame...the Bush Push back when ND was (lol) #9 at the time. Plus they beat 5 ranked opponents including a clobber over Arkansas (granted they had a bad year, record wise)

Again, I agree that USC and Texas were no slouch teams. But if you saw the Penn State vs Ohio State game, you'd see that Penn State dominated Ohio State worse than the score showed, but field conditions kept it close (I thought Troy Smith was going to get seriously injured by all the hits he was taking).

USC's win over ND was impressive.

Penn State's best win is probably at Illinois. Yes, I know Illinois sucked, but they did have a pulse (they took San Jose State to the woodshed).

But still, to be able to take a team with at least a little pulse, beat them 56-3 by halftime in their own stadium, is amazing. That's more what you'd expect a score to be on a video game, not real life. Joe Paterno forced the offense to take a knee for most of the second half, so they only scored on a defensive TD in the second half.

Also, I know this may be apples and oranges, but a rebuilding Penn State in 2006 almost beat Ohio State at the Horseshoe, but gave the game away on mistakes.

Illinois didn't show a pulse (nor won a game) since starting 2-0 and their closet game in that span was a 35-20 loss @ Cal during that span. Penn State had 3 road games and their biggest was easily Northwestern, because the Wildcats had a winning record. USC's road games were much tougher and the strength of schedule overall was tougher.

I would have loved to see a playoff system to see these top 4, 8 or 16 teams play it out, however I would have still expected Texas and USC.

I don't think you can really penalize Penn State for the fact that their road opponents mostly sucked. For the most part, they kicked the shit out of everyone they played on the road and at home.

Regardless of how bad Illinois was, leading 56-3 at halftime, with the starters pulled midway through the second quarter, is amazing. Even doing that at Temple would be amazing.

A playoff in my opinion would have either generated Penn State and USC or Penn State and Texas.

This was a great game. Both Florida State and Penn State were underrated, while Texas and USC were overrated. They should have stuck with the traditional system so that Penn State could have exposed USC for the fraud they were, and Florida State could have beaten a Texas team that squeaked by an OSU team that was smothered by a PSU team that FSU played down to the wire.

USC a fraud? This was a horrible Florida State team who finished 8-5 and it took 3 OT's for Penn State to win that game. And had Penn State held on against Michigan they would been in the championship game over Texas I believe (can't remember the rankings from that long ago). This was one of the few years that there was a consensus on who should have been playing for the title.....the two teams that finished undefeated.

USC would have beaten Penn State like they usually do to Big 10 teams.

Remember that "horrible" Florida State team upset Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship Game. And Penn State still won despite a few key injuries. Our leading defensive and offensive players were out for the game, but we won anyway. I've seen many teams fold like a lawn chair after losing key players. With Tony Hunt and Paul Pusluzney in the game, score might have been 35-13. And don't forget the fumble that should have put them up 23-13 late in the game, but instead set up a game typing FG.

That Michigan game was chock full of bad calls. Not just the two seconds, but several times their recievers were out of bounds but called in. And besides, this wasn't that bad of a 7-5 Michigan team. They went up 21-12 over Ohio State, only to lose in the last 20 seconds, they were a FG away from beating Minnesota, and also nearly beat Wisconsin. This is a team that just happened to find ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. But remember, they were #20 before losing the Alamo Bowl.

USC may have been able to beat Penn State, but I don't think so. Even if they could have, I guarantee you it wouldn't have been a blowout. Penn State had a powerful offense and a defense that typically was as stingy as Ebeneezer Scrooge. Only two teams scored more than 17 points in regulation on the first string defense (some of the starters were pulled against Michigan State at the end, and all the reserves were in against Cincinatti). Also, don't forget how bad Penn State beat Illinois.

You don't know mainly because the two never played each other. It was a lot like Nebraska vs PSU in 1994, never happened. Penn State didn't struggle through the season, they kicked the shit out of just about everyone they played. They beat up an Ohio State team that Texas squirmed by (the 17-10 score was only close because the field was slop, in better conditions, Penn State would have won more like 38-14).
