Geez! I didn't realize the big carriers could pitch that much. I thought they were too huge to be so drastically affected by the waves. (Obviously I spend NO time near the ocean).
I wonder what it's like, trying to conduct flight ops in that weather, or if it's even possible. (I mean, I assume there's gotta be some sort of flight readiness in case of war, but I can see one of those waves smothering the engines of a plane as it cats through).
The YMS 133 went down off Coos Bay Oregon on Feb 20 1943. My dad had just left this minesweeper six weeks before. All 13 crew were lost, they were his friends.. Honor them, remember them. They went down to the sea and died for this country.
Anchors Aweigh is perfect for this video. Being at sea in heavy weather like this, is a part of Navy service most people never see. Go USN, Go NAVY Football 2011.
@C17Inspector Its a great tune and it pretty much matches the cadence of the wipers and the crashing seas. Two turns of the tune matched the length of the video perfectly. I lucked out there. I'm glad you enjoy it.
I served on the USS Independence CVA-62 and saw these exact conditions in January of "70" coming back from the Med. We were on our final leg up the East Coast. Thanks much for this Vid and thanks to all Vets for the time they gave. God Bless you all.
@bobobread I heard that.USS Mahan DDG 42,85-88.Hurricane Frederick was a heavy storm but we got slammed around pretty good during the 85-86 Med Cruise. No one got any sleep for a few days from all the rocking & the CO had to declare holiday routine so we could catch up.Chow course was never a constant compass order, either.
PLEASE someone tell me what's with the aicraft so close to the bow, it's left to get submerged. I mean, did it get too rough to fast to put it below, or is this a genuine #uck-up.?
i was stationed aboard an ATF out of Pearl in the early 70's. These seas would have had every one giving back the least meal not to mention green water over the bridge.
These are probably 20-25 foot seas like Ensign Steve said. I too was aboard a carrier and the Mediteranean was always like this when we were crossing back through it on the way home in early winter. I remember hearing those waves crash onto the flight deck and the whole ship rattling against them. Best days of my life!
Speaking as someone with no nautical background, how typical are seas this rough and is their any danger posed to the crew and or carrier? I can't imagine water spilling over and crashing onto the deck of a damn aircraft carrier is a frequent occurrence!
@brazilianjiujitsu93 We once took a 65º roll. The supposed safety limit was 63º.
I loved it when we got new recruits aboard. They could never finish a meal. Especially not when I ran my thumb over my food tray and commented about how "grrreeasy" it was. They would always get up and run.......I got lots of extra desserts that way!
Somewhere in the middle of the wine dark sea... A pilot prepares to dry his aircraft even though it hasn't rained. Oh, I take it all the other aircraft were in the hangar deck?
@gnrdude I wouldnt really say its strange to find this cool I mean a ship that is longer than 3 football fields and weighs two hundered million pounds crashing through waves, it pretty awesome.
No. Not in those conditions unless it was a true emergency. Helicopter would not be bad taking off, its the landing that is the tricky part. All flights ops are cancelled and flight deck is closed to all hands, unless emergency.
I spend 3 1/2 years on this ship from 95-98. I absolutly loved being out at sea. I was a SAR Swimmer, so we got to fly around alot and got to see many parts of the world...now the military is paying for my school. Thank You!!
It's a Bosun's Whistle, used to sound Bosun's Calls. I'm not sure, but I think that particular call is the Still, used to call the crew to attention. Or it may be the one piped before general announcements, called the General Call.
That also reminds me when we were off the coast of Australia near Guam, we were going through some rough seas and one of our amphibious ships took a 45 degree roll and we have a few casualties, and many injuries. We had to perform an emergency evac and blood drive. I will always remember that.
