  • is that an f-18?

  • I feel for who ever had to clean the helo at the top of the bow. Sea water is murder to aircraft and that bird just got a heavy downpour of it...

  • thats badass :O. (future navy here)

  • Geez! I didn't realize the big carriers could pitch that much. I thought they were too huge to be so drastically affected by the waves. (Obviously I spend NO time near the ocean).

I wonder what it's like, trying to conduct flight ops in that weather, or if it's even possible. (I mean, I assume there's gotta be some sort of flight readiness in case of war, but I can see one of those waves smothering the engines of a plane as it cats through).

  • i have seen this as i was in a typhoon on board the uss yorktown cvs 10 during vietnam.

  • The four jerks who didn't like the video must have been those Army pukes losing their lunches in the berthing compartment! :-)

  • Damn! white water coming over the flight deck? Shit like this still makes my d**k hard!

  • the navy is better than the army, but can you let them win football?

  • @quarterstarstudios11 Never Navy beats Army!!!!!

  • 2 dislikes are landlubbers, who got sea sick watching this!

  • The YMS 133 went down off Coos Bay Oregon on Feb 20 1943. My dad had just left this minesweeper six weeks before. All 13 crew were lost, they were his friends.. Honor them, remember them. They went down to the sea and died for this country.

  • Seal Team 6- Only The Best- Go Navy!

  • Anchors Aweigh is perfect for this video. Being at sea in heavy weather like this, is a part of Navy service most people never see. Go USN, Go NAVY Football 2011.

  • @C17Inspector Its a great tune and it pretty much matches the cadence of the wipers and the crashing seas. Two turns of the tune matched the length of the video perfectly. I lucked out there. I'm glad you enjoy it.

  • That's Cool!!! Idk why... :S ...thx

  • poor helli on front of the ship

  • when i saw the first portion of this vid i was like HOLY SHIT! ABANDON SHIP! but then i was like theyll be ok

  • I served on the USS Independence CVA-62 and saw these exact conditions in January of "70" coming back from the Med. We were on our final leg up the East Coast. Thanks much for this Vid and thanks to all Vets for the time they gave. God Bless you all.

  • whan carrier is that?

i know it's a nimez but what is the name.

  • try being in that on a destoyer

  • @bobobread I heard that.USS Mahan DDG 42,85-88.Hurricane Frederick was a heavy storm but we got slammed around pretty good during the 85-86 Med Cruise. No one got any sleep for a few days from all the rocking & the CO had to declare holiday routine so we could catch up.Chow course was never a constant compass order, either.

  • @bobobread or half a Destroyer - FFG Frigate.....

  • I love the part the the boat was all like "SPLOOSH!" SPRAY! "SPLOOSH!"

  • all that water getting taken over the bow cant be good for that lone chopper up there lol

  • THE USS ENTERPRICE OF WW2 IS THE PRIDE OF THE US NAVY.

  • LOL windsheild wiper

  • LOL Thanks for this video. It almost makes me feel seasick.

  • where did the bow go? Oh there it is under the water

  • Hooyah! This is the Kitty Hawk. Talk about rough seas. GO NAVY!

  • PLEASE someone tell me what's with the aicraft so close to the bow, it's left to get submerged. I mean, did it get too rough to fast to put it below, or is this a genuine #uck-up.?

  • i was stationed aboard an ATF out of Pearl in the early 70's. These seas would have had every one giving back the least meal not to mention green water over the bridge.

  • doe's anyone know if we can build a complete aircraft carrier without ordering parts from overseas

  • That video will get your sea legs back. Nice job.

  • Thanks for the video. I've been there many times, only on a frigate. USN, baby!

  • @ShotDownInFlames2 My pleasure. I'm glad you enjoy it.

  • @ShotDownInFlames2 So did I, but on assault ships - USS MOUNT VERNON (LSD-39) and USS AUSTIN (LPD-4).

  • obama is reducing us to only 8 carriers.

  • @BrandiECoyote thats odd considering were building another one. Next time do some research before you open your mouth and say something stupid.

  • ALL CLEAR

  • I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way.

John Paul Jones. Rock on U.S.N.!

  • Creepy!!!

  • There is a Seaking at the fore deck. Will it be damaged by the washing?

  • i didnt know aircraft carriers had whindshield whippers

  • just wondering because it sounds funny but how do you change wiper blades on a carrier?

  • awl i remember bein a plane captain on the USS Roosevelt almost gettin blown overboard when a f14 turned on me lol

  • that carrier is treadn' some serious waters, cool vid!

  • These are probably 20-25 foot seas like Ensign Steve said. I too was aboard a carrier and the Mediteranean was always like this when we were crossing back through it on the way home in early winter. I remember hearing those waves crash onto the flight deck and the whole ship rattling against them. Best days of my life!

  • ...Remember the "Kursk"...

  • Haha! Nice version! Thanks!

  • Green water over the bow. And I'll bet that helo is real proud of whoever chained her down right there...

  • 100 foot seas? Try 20... at best. Looks like more relative wind action than high seas, shipmate.

  • Hundred foot sea's my ass.

  • Friend , from the flight deck to the water line is right at 100 ft so its very possiable these are 100 ft waves, How do i know? Because I was on one

  • My mistake, i had read somewhere that it was 60ft.

  • No big deal, its not something most people know about

  • Served on CV-62 and CVN-72, I experienced these conditions during the East Asian Monsoon season!

  • I was on CV-64 God i miss being in

  • the sea is reminding the boat who is the boss............

  • Speaking as someone with no nautical background, how typical are seas this rough and is their any danger posed to the crew and or carrier? I can't imagine water spilling over and crashing onto the deck of a damn aircraft carrier is a frequent occurrence!

  • Big Mike Two---- You should have been on a Fletcher Class destroyer if you wanted to see pitching and rolling.

Those carriers looked like they never even moved compared to the tin cans.

  • @sailor61177 my grandfather served on the USS Conway DDE 507 in the 60's and he tells me stories of how she would roll in the seas

  • @brazilianjiujitsu93 We once took a 65º roll. The supposed safety limit was 63º.

I loved it when we got new recruits aboard. They could never finish a meal. Especially not when I ran my thumb over my food tray and commented about how "grrreeasy" it was. They would always get up and run.......I got lots of extra desserts that way!

  • Sea sickness never bothered me. All the times we'd go rolling, I'd be laughing hysterically. I always thought it was hilarious.

  • No lol

  • Am I the only one who finds the wipers amusing?

  • Those wipers never worked either! LOL

  • No! :D

  • Favorited. Something about a giant aircraft carrier looking like a little skiff being pounded by the colossal volume of the oceans. :)

  • Brave Boys !

  • Ohhhhh that poor Crashhawk on the bow!

  • Somewhere in the middle of the wine dark sea... A pilot prepares to dry his aircraft even though it hasn't rained. Oh, I take it all the other aircraft were in the hangar deck?

  • For some Strange reason I Find this Video Cool...

  • Thank you. It is a tremendous video and I love the tune. I'm happy with the way it turned out. Thanks again.

  • not strange. i agree with you

  • Because it is :)

  • @gnrdude I wouldnt really say its strange to find this cool I mean a ship that is longer than 3 football fields and weighs two hundered million pounds crashing through waves, it pretty awesome.

  • @legojoe12345 If you think that is cool. imagine being inside while that is going on. Now that will put hair on your ass!

  • @Flagman00 Definetly!

  • @Flagman00 That ain't shit... Riding a 80,000 ton carrier..... max 5 degree roll...... Yawn...

Try going through that on a 4,500 ton single screw FFG frigate, thats a "God Damn Adventure"!

  • I want to drive a aircraft carrier.

  • "Whaddya mean you forgot to put tiedowns on that helo?"

  • Dud, "What helo"??? LOL. =Stefan=

  • thats why id join the air force

  • MAN Looks like that Helicopter is Going To go into the Drink.........

  • No. Not in those conditions unless it was a true emergency. Helicopter would not be bad taking off, its the landing that is the tricky part. All flights ops are cancelled and flight deck is closed to all hands, unless emergency.

  • How would you like to be sitting in that Helicoptor riding the waves.

  • God Bless America - I'm staggered by her naval mastery engaging the Japanese in WW2.

  • I spend 3 1/2 years on this ship from 95-98. I absolutly loved being out at sea. I was a SAR Swimmer, so we got to fly around alot and got to see many parts of the world...now the military is paying for my school. Thank You!!

  • This video is my way of thanking you.

  • I didnt see your comment until after I posted one about that heli on deck. Is it possible to take off in these conditions for a rescue?

  • @skycadentmt very cool, you were a SAR swimmer? im interested in that as a job

  • just out of curiosity, what is the little whistle thing at the end?

I've heard it before but I wasn't sure what it means

  • It's a Bosun's Whistle, used to sound Bosun's Calls. I'm not sure, but I think that particular call is the Still, used to call the crew to attention. Or it may be the one piped before general announcements, called the General Call.

  • That also reminds me when we were off the coast of Australia near Guam, we were going through some rough seas and one of our amphibious ships took a 45 degree roll and we have a few casualties, and many injuries. We had to perform an emergency evac and blood drive. I will always remember that.

  • cool

    thank you very much

  • The Hornet is still on Deck because it is policy of Carriers to always have a jet launch ready no matter the weather. A Carrier's defense's depend on it.

  • cool video and love the music

  • A heart felt thanks to you boys in blue. I am a soilder and we always called you guys Pier Queers, but that is just how it was. Again, thanks for your service!

  • i remeber i was on the uss john c stennis heading to nova scotia june of 97 i think it was and let me tell you we had to close the hanger bays .. you could hear the propellers come out of the water as we listed was the worst weather we ever sailed in you couldnt tell the sky from the ocean. it was errie .. the haze of the sea from the temparature diffrence and the fog from the clouds above . it was almost movie like.

  • surely a being on aship as big as a nimitz class carrier cant be too bad.

and why on earth is that FA/18 hornet still on deck in that weather?

  • trust me it was.. we didnt think it was that bad either though we flew our entire squadrons off and our helos as well. but it was an experience ill never forget.

  • I listened to this in honor of my father who passed away in Dec. 2008. Every 4th of july he would play patriotic music all day long! Happy 4th of July!!!!!!

  • Go Navy

  • Very Dangerus. It´s nuthing for me (urgh)exuse me i get green in my face.

  • so is bad spelling.

  • lmao

  • The USS Independence CV-62 had thirty feet of catwalk ripped off the bow in a storm like this. We also had a man washed overboard. We were watching these mountains coming at us when we see this guy pop up waving out in the water. They got a chopper off and rescued the guy. I think we set some records for degrees of list. I remember the ride in the forward part of the ship was like you felt like you weighed 20Lbs then you weighed 500Lbs.

    Don't mess with Mother Nature.

  • We lost a guy takin trash out on the sponson one time, they never found him. Crazy to see nothing but water when the bow went down, and then nothing but sky when it came up. You only got a glimpse of the horizon when it flashed by.

  • Holy crap dude! I'm gettin' seasick just WATCHING it! Haha :-)

  • ahh this brings back memories. This looks like a Kitty Hawuk or Forestal class carrier. Cant see the number on the bow. When I was on the Ranger I went through many seas like this and being part of the flight deck crew of chaining down planes while you are pitching and roling

  • Poor damned DDs and CAs, hehe.

  • That's a day to skip meals on the mess deck.

  • DD Sailors should get flight pay half the time and submarine pay the other half. They are out of the water half the time and under it the other half.

    Greyhounds of the fleet!

  • I agree with you on that LOL!!! I was a flat top sailor and watching our poor escorts from Destroyers, Frigates, and supply ships appear and reappear in high seas and role over on their sides to where their screws pop out briefly is amazing they right themselves

  • AND....You're a fucking idiot. FUCK YOU. maybe you and your banana boat country would like to take on that single ship, rust and all. You would go sown in a ball of flames within minutes. asshole

  • And what navy do you think could handle those waves? USN is the most powerful in the world.

  • Funny that. It's an odd coincidence then that we spend most of our time helping Europe fix their mistakes.

  • Let us remember folks, the bow of this ship in 70 feet above the water in normal situations. These boys do this all the them. OOhra

Semper Fi. Yes, I'm an old Jarhead.

  • awesome!cool

  • carriers have wind shield wipers????

  • I guess so. Just like driving on the highway, right?

  • i wouldn't say its like driving on the highway but i see your point

  • They do on the bridge.

  • Awesome! I suppose the Navy's aircraft are designed to withstand such weathering?

  • wow...nice... 5/5!!!

  • Thanks. It's my understanding that this was shot from the bridge during the recent cyclone that devastated Myanmar.

  • Negative, this was on the Kittyhawk returning from not pulling into Hong Kong in 2007. Just another Super Typhoon in the way of going home.

  • Hey, thanks for the info.
