  • I'm trying to think of a way in which he could possibly have any more Cambridge Stud influence in his pedigree, but I can't. Love it when horses that are super on the track turn out to be super in the barn as well.

  • You just have to look at the some of the great horses that this guy beat and the true story is told. Cox Plate and Hong Kong Mile winner , Sunline , 3 time Melbourne Cup Winner Makybe Diva , Caulfield Cup , Dubai Duty Free Winner Elvestroem , Caulfield Cup and Singapore Cup winner Mummify and very good horses like Grand Armee , Shogun Lodge , Defier , Platinum Scissors and Freemason.

  • would you really call him a miler though? i think he did better at 2000.

  • @HunterDaYid .........His record was exceptional at 2000mdue to his ability to relax, allowing him to show that brilliance at the end of the race. That said I believe his best was at 1600m. he had enough in the tank to produce that unbeatable exposive turn of foot. and was never trained to be a grinding type that slugs it out over the longer distances. He was trained to make the most of his greatest asset "speed". Also started each season fit as winning record increases value for stallions.

  • yeah truly the greatest victory Ive ever seen. champion just like his dad

  • who rode this horse

  • Seeing Lonhro's pedigree was interesting - the two American horses that are being debated for horse of the year, Blame and Zenyatta, both descend from Mr. Prospector and Forli. Lonhro had both horses through his dame Shadea, and with Nureyev in Octagonal's line, Lonhro has Forli on both sides. Forli was the sire of the great (and I am not misusing the word "great") Forego, my all time favorite (please search Forego 1976 Marlboro), so any relative of Forego is okay by me!

  • everyone says that sunline was getting on in her career when she met lonhro - lonhro still had a lot of scope when he met her in that race he was at his best towards the end of his career and it was believed (J. Hawkes) that he would have been an even better 6yr old horse if he had kept racing

  • i was a huge fan of lonhro and sunline and i would have to give her the edge over lonhro in terms of greatness....2 cox plates 2 doncasters...is hard to go past...she would have given lonhro a clean pair of heels in her prime over 2000 but they met when she was getting on in her career a bit...lonhro was amazing though he racked up a few of those g1 victories in effortless fashion.

  • It make's the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, remember first start when he was beaten by royal courtship but you felt he was a special special racehorse and he proved it.

  • Every time I see that final Australian Cup my heart pounds. I'm an American and obviously pay more attention to my country's racing, but that race is probably the most memorable I've ever seen. I've probably watched it about 30 times by now, and I still cannot believe that he actually gets up there. Magnificent!

  • @Perididdle great horse great jockey magic moment

  • Smart Lonhro colt DENMAN will be set for the July Cup held over 1200m at Newmarket England.

The winner of 10 from 13 starts including the G1 Golden Rose 1400m will attempt to be the first Australian to win the G1 event. Takeover Target, Choisir and Scenic Blast all failed after winning the 1000m lead up race at Royal Ascot although Denman was never considered for that race as the 1000m is to short.

  • such a champion race horse....and such a shame that Beadman pulled him up in his last race......

  • What a greaaaaat horse !!! :O

  • Beadman is one of my favorite's but he stuffed this ride and Lonhro took over and got Darren home which made it so special he never won a Cox or Doncaster but for me he will always be number one!

  • Australian Cup his best win by far. Great ride by Beadman.

  • hes part of arabs now, disgrace to what woodlands stood for,if he dont get results be dog meat sad but true.

  • what did woodlands stand for exactly pjm?

  • It could be a great thing if the Lonhro's end up racing all over the world.

Darley have studs set up in every corner of the globe and it would be great to see a Lonhro come out and will the Kentucky Derby or the Dubai World Cup....no?

  • sick of people bagging the inghams about their decision... you build up a 500m horse empire from 2 horses and then u can call the shots

people dont understand that it is EXACTLY the same system as before.. just different ownership

im a huge fan of the old freemason.. he was so awesome.. especially his BMW win over northerly... i cant find it anywhere :(

  • i can look at that aust cup04 a thousand times an i still dont know how he didnt get demolished i guess that is what seperates the legends from the rest!!

  • Greatest mile horse ive ever seen, no horse ever had a turn of foot like lonhro(made great horses look ordinary)

  • yeah definately... just watch what he did to makybe diva in the australia cup... shes burning almost all of them and lonhro goes further ahead

  • Absolutley Magnificent horse!

Lonhro and Octagonal - gives me chills every time I see their races, two of our greatest.

  • LONHRO's youngsters have done well as 2yr olds but I've no doubt that we will see them dominate as 3yr olds.

Minesota Shark, Black Minx, Oil Baron and Mortal look to have a stack of potential while many more are being held back until more mature.

  • yeah can't believe Bob fag Ingham sold Lonhro and Octagonal! Octagonal is peoples property! pfft yeah right, it was all for you millions of dollars...poor Lonhro!

  • You call Bob Ingham a fag but you have a favourite video of someone fainting in a spelling B.....

    Spell "HYPOCRASY"

  • blah blah blackmourning11. "I look at ppl's favourites because I have nothing else better to do....or say....thats my only way of getting back to you...."

  • UCHIHA888...you are a dipshit.

The Ingham brothers poured millions of dollars into Australian racing and everyone should be thankful for it.

Futhermore they continued racing both Octagonal + Lonhro, both Group 1 winning entires, until they were rising 6yr olds which is unheard of anywhere in the world. Had they been owned by any other breeders they would have been retired early and you would never have witnessed Lonhro's amazing Australian Cup victory.

    His retirement was well earnt.

  • i really do think you should be quiet..

bob ingham has done more for australian racing than you can ever have imagined... and yes octagonal and lonhro are peoples property but it is only through the dedication of bob and the woodlands team that these great horses are in the public eye

  • Bob Ingham has done more?? What about Jack? Jack had pride in the horses he bread. When Jack passed all Bob did was show boat by spending millions of dollars at the sales and then selling out. I heard that Jacks grave is at woodlands. Talk about letting your brother down. Jack was the one that cared about the horses. Bob seems to just care about getting on tv and in the papers.

  • That was for tbezz24.

  • yes im well aware it was for me... but if u look at the context i was speaking.. i was defending bobs decision to sell..

and yeah jack is buried beside the statue of octagonal at woodlands... but i wasnt questioning his commitment.. he was undoubtedly the face.. but its a bit rich that u say all that bob cares about was tv and papers considering he attends only the melbourne cup carnival of ALL the race meetings throughout the year and avoids tabloids..

  • he is 76 and has had enough... even jack would have considered selling.. you dont understand the scope of what they were doing

  • Well, its obvious to me that if you want to be buried somewhere like that you must think your family would like to keep it around. I think Bob is in racing for the wrong reasons. Jack was the man.

I think the sell out was wrong in that respect. I bet jacks kids wouldn't be to happy about it.

  • mmm sorry to let you know but it was john ingham (jacks son) that was all for it so yeah u cant really play that card..

despite bobs 'reasons' for racing.. he is still one of the largest contributors to it..

theres always going to be pros and cons to any deal of the magnitude of that sale.. however.. the cons for this particular one is its contribution to the CAD and sentimental cons.. jack will continue to r.i.p

  • Ummm, actually johnny is bobs son. And im pretty sure he wasn't for it at the start. Now that bob has his own few horses im sure he thinks its ok.

But im sure Jacks side wouldn't be to happy about it.

  • It just looks like Bob is trying to remove Jacks name. Like he resent's him or something. Thats just what ive seen in the last couple of interviews he's done.

  • blackmourning11, I agree. Lonhro has always been my fave horse (and I'm originally from the UK). He was a true champ. Hopefully he gets to sire here, and remain here. By the way theres a foal of his called Munro, lightly raced. Lets see how it goes.

    Love you big 'L'

    Phil

  • It will be interesting because unlike the Inghams I doubt that Darley will have any reluctance in sending Lonhro (and other stallions) to the northern hemisphere out of concern for their well being.

  • Bob Ingham has sold EVERYTHING including Lonhro, Octagonal and the rest of his stallions!!!

I can't believe he'd sell Lonhro, thought maybe he'd keep him as a pet or something.

Lonhro will now fall under the Darley banner owned by Sheik Al Mullumbimbihallal.

    Good luck Bob.

  • It will be interesting to see how long the Sheikh Al 'Mullumbimbihallal' (LMFAO) keeps Snowden on for.

  • who is one of lohros foals

makybe diva3 time melbourne cup winner was in that race

  • gives me chills everytime i watch this.

  • It is so good to see owners who want to race their valuable stallions instead of rushing them to the barn as a 3 year old

  • Agreed.

I just wish they would have taken Lonhro to Dubai.

  • CONGRATULATIONS with the champ's first win as sire.

2yr old filly BLACK MINX was all class running down another nice youngster, Rare Diamond (Redoute's Choice), in her debut at Doomben.

BLACK MINX is out of group winner Faith Hill.

It was only his 3rd starter and so far they all look awesome.

  • Good little horse that Black Minx ... she really knuckled down well and hit the line hard , reminded me of her famous father for a second or two. They have a good opinion of her aswell , nominated for the magic millions.

  • The one huge advantage Lonhro has as a sire is that he doesn't carry any Danehill/Danzig blood.

The Lonhro x Danehill cross will ensure that he sires plenty of 2yr old winners like Black Minx who is out of a Danehill mare.

  • That is very true , cross him with some Northern Dancer line mares and you'll get a shit load of prococity. Hes going to get a good bunch of two year olds , i can just feel it. I still like the look of his 1st ever starter , uhhhmm , segolene i think.

Bring her back as a 3yr old and she'll make a nice little middle distance horse

  • Black Minx won her 2nd start in fine style and is now one of the favourites for the Gold Coast Magic Millions.

She's a lovely type with plenty of scope for improvement and should go on with it as a 3yr old.

    GO BLACK MINX!!!

  • NEXT ONE COMING UP....

Munhro out of Regrowth. Trained by David Hayes having first start in the Merson Cooper.

  • Ahh his run in the George Ryder was unbelievable . . just cantered up to Grand Armee and flew right past him , plus private steer was a few lengths behind them

  • Private Steer won her next two starts in the Doncaster Hcp and the All Aged Stakes, both Group 1 over 1600m.

He had the ability to make very good horses look 2nd rate due to his amazing ability.

GOOGLE: "a ferrari of a thoroughbred" to read a brilliant article by one of Australia's greatest ever sports writers.

  • Mmm not a bad it little write up about him was it.

I do disagree about his comment about it being a pity he wasnt tested over longer than 2000m. I dont think Lonhro was a genuine 2000m horse .. it was just his brilliance , histurn of foot and unbelievale talent. Im glad Hawkes didnt test him over further

  • Not to sure myself.

Hawkes did say that because he was a stallion it was important for him to win as many races as possible. Because of that they had to set him for the early races from 1200m-1400-1600m etc so he was trained like a sprinter-miler, not a stayer.

Both his wins over Sunline and the Australian Cup were run at genuine tempo (both 10f) so if he had been trained to stay who knows.

Also if he had not got sick he would have run in the Australian Derby.

  • mmm .. maybe him getting sick before the derby was a blessing in disguise

  • What a shame Ian Craig spoilt these with his ranting instead of sticking to calling the race, something he always has a bad habit of doing. Think Greg Miles calls where exellent, in particular not writing him off in the Aust Cup.

  • They actually cleaned up one of his calls when he proclaimed the effort "MAGNIFICANT"

  • What a champion. Especially that victory in the Australian Cup.

Too bad he didnt get to have a Cox Plate to his name :/

  • Yeah is a terrific vid . . gives me goosebumps every time i watch it

  • truly one of the greats of the turf!!!!

  • I can't get enough of this video.

It was done well, especially as it shows him up close and personal in the run.

It also shows the head on shot of the interference in the Australian Cup.

Every win was breath-taking. Unlike some greats that toughed out wins he just destroyed them.

  • Sadly Lonhro's dam SHADEA passed away a couple of days ago after a paddock accident at the age of 19 years.

She was also the dam of Lonhro's full brother Niello who won three G1's at 1900m-2000m as well as having produced some nice youngsters yet to race.

  • As a racehorse SHADEA won the G3 Sweet Embrace Stakes for 2yr fillies as well as running 2nd to champion 2yr old Tierce in the G1 AJC Sires Produce 1400m and the G1 Champagne Stakes 1600m.

  • Lonhro's youngsters are coming along well but I wouldn't be surprised to see his best at 3yrs. Don't be surprised if they win a Derby or two.

  • what a spectacular horse. will he be shuttled to the US or europe?

  • No.

  • Being such a valuable stallion the owners would be unlikely to send him anywhere, especially as the horse was a favourite of theirs.

Unlike some breeders the Inghams also have a real love of the thoroughbred and rarely put them at risk which is why unfortunately Lonhro didn't race overseas.

  • Not long now before Lonhro's first crop begin racing.

    Expect big things.

  • The difference between real pro's & the wanna be's is that real pro's bet with the head & not the heart. We couldnt careless about allegiances & we have no emotional attachement to any horse. We work purely on objective data such as ratings and subjective factors such as track bias, etc...Those who think that they are in the know but really arent parade their so called knowledge but really are pure mugs!

  • RATINGS? You idiot. Do your own work you bum. Probably follow market movers too. Sheep following sheep.

Have you ever got up at 4.00am to go to trackwork and clocked the horses yourself? Would you know what horse it was that cantered past?

Have you ever even owned a horse?

Amatuer hour sounds to me. You are a chump.

  • Since when do you get up at 4.00am BM? I don't see you until ALL the real work is done you arsehole.

  • zzzZZZ

  • Sure, if they have the right temperament.

With the Aust. Cup though Lonhro's momentum is stopped just as he's reaching top gear which cost him a few lengths. He then has to be pulled around the heels of runners going past him, balance back up then get going again. Without the interference I'd say he wins by approx. 5 to 6 lengths.

  • After his check (Austr. Cup)he pulls to the outside, balances up and gets going again. Elvstroem is coming home hard but somehow Lonhro PULLS AWAY from him.

BTW, these horses he's beating are exceptionally good. Notice how easily he beats Defier yet couldn't get him at M.Valley. Shame Cox Plate at Valley.

  • didn't win a cox plate

was a great horse but a legend of the turf no way

  • Had a greater winning strike rate than Phar Lap so what does that tell you? Cox Plate only one race and run on a strathayr track with a ridiculous 250m straight (past champs won it on old turf). Met Makybe Diva once & kicked her brains in by 5 Len. over 2000m at Flemington.

  • only someone with a lack of racing knowledge would say he wasn't a legend of the turf. what horse could do what he done in the australian cup, got smashed and still thrashed elvstroem and makybe diva. trainers, jockeys turf expert say champion, mcpharlap is a nobody

  • Do You Live Here BM11 ? The thing I liked about Lonhro is that he beat horses that were multiple group 1 winners. Grand Armee, Makybe Diva, Sunline, Shogun Lodge, Mummify, Private Steer, Defier, Elvstroem, Viscount, he raced in a golden era yet had a better strike rate than Phar Lap and ranks top five ALL TIME WIN % for stakes winners AMAZING

  • you have no idea mcpharlap he is is one of the greats

that donned the racecourse in the last century!

the best win ive seen from any horse in the last ten years was his australia cup victory!

    an absoulte consistent champion!

  • WAHT A HORSE....GO YOU GOOD THING

  • Lonhro x Lady Mulan filly just passed in for $280,000 US at the Easter Yearling sales

  • LOnhro! His MY FAVOURITE RACE HORSE! and our mare is in foal to him! ARHHHHH to Excited!

  • who is your mare? If you're the real deal you're very lucky as the majority of mares in foal to Lonhro are either stakes winning mares or owned by Woodlands (Mr.Ingham the chicken king) If I was a "chick" I'd find a way to marry into that family. Apart from Lonhro my favourite was Unworldly. She was a freak but broke down and had to be put down. Octagonal was awesome winning the triple crown and we could see another big name with the Flying Spur 2yr old Shaft.

  • Yer!i must addmit i love Octagonal too. but i show ride horses so have a soft spot for Zabeel since he produces a lot of fine show hacks.

  • Zabeel is recently deceased. His stock were quality thoroughbreds which produced multiple G1 winners with he himself taking out the G1 Australian Guineas. Some of his best were Might And Power, Jezabeel, Reset, Mouwad and of course Octagonal.

  • YER! lol he did produce some stars! i know 4 alone that have been awesome royal show winners lol!

  • Our mares name is Valse Des Fluer.. she had one foal already. do you like the horse Racers Edge?

  • don't you mean Valse Des Fluers. This Stravinsky mare is owned by the Gillespe family who are well into the racing game. If you are a part of this family you are one lucky champ. Any Stravinsky mare sent to Lonhro will have been bred purely for speed....KABOOOMMM

  • Lonhro! YOU'RE MY HERO! lol. I ♥ Lonhro so much. I think he's awesome. I save every picture I find of him :) Thanks for putting this on here! :D I didn't know he'd raced against Makybe Diva! AND HE WON! lol

  • i love this video. I've been lucky enough to watch Lonhro race around Sydney and it's something I will never forget. My girlfriend of five years who had never been anywhere near a horse talks about Lonhro as if she owned him. =) watching those finishes back to back clearly shows the way he explodes past his rivals, gives you goosebumps. The Australian Cup will be my favourite for many years to come. thanks for posting this.

  • I am so glad to have watched this video. It is without a doubt one the best I've seen. I absolutely loved how much heart and speed Lonhro had. The way he won after getting checked up was astounding. Australia is extremely proud of him, I'm sure. What a champion! Favourited and 5 emphatic stars. God bless.

  • While I've added more than my fair share of comments I have to add for those that aren't aware that the races shown were all G1 events, won on five different racecourses. Five of his eleven G1 wins were over 2000m. He won all seven starts at 3yrs, all stakes races at set weights or WFA including the G1 Caulfield Guines. Amazing considering the disadvantage of being a December foal.

  • That's the Caulfield Guineas. Contained G1 winners Viking Ruler, Dash For Cash and of course Viscount who was unlucky not to win the Cox Plate at his next start.

  • Would love to see some footage of Octagonal on here. Pretty difficult to find. I don't think it's possible that he could not succeed as a sire with a family tree like his. Would like to see a Makybe Diva/ Lohnro colt racing in a few years once his first crop have proven themselves. Or even a Octagonal/ Makybe Diva. Would hate the job of halter breaking it!

  • I believe M.Diva was over rated due to the lack of class opponents during her 2005 season yet she has the makings of a lovely broodmare, (will be helped due to selection of choice stallions.) While her sireline (Desert King, also sire of Desert War) carries the impessive Danehill x Nureyev cross (Northern Dancer) it's her dam Tugela that I'm taken to. The Riverman X Roberto bloodline is littered with class stayers and I think Lonhro (could've run 2400m if trained to) would go well with M.Diva.

  • I can't see how you could over-rate a horse that wins three consecutive Melbourne Cups. I know that the feat could only ever be achieved by a mare because of handicap consessions but over-rated. Please! That's like saying Secretariat's win in the Belmont was over-reated because he only won by 100m.

  • I didn't say she was no good but some people have her rated as the best since Phar Lap...please. As a stayer she was great but you need to remember that Australia breed for speed (take note Japan 1,2 M.Cup) so Cup wins aren't as hard as the back in the day. Who'd she beat in her G1's ? Winning Belle, Lad Of The Manor, She's Archie etc. She didn't win WFA G1's until top liners retired (watch her in Lonhro's Australian Cup win, rails run but couldn't match them)

  • There was a time that three of Australia's major races were held over 4800m and Melbourne Cup winners would be asked to carry 60kgs+ with a 42kg limit on their 2nd attempt. Champion mare Wakeful carried 61.5kgs first attempt, running 2nd to Lord Cardigan 46kgs (won Sydney Cup with 55kgs six months later.) Australia no longer breeds 2 milers, in fact winning the M.Cup could lower an entires value in Australia. Sunlines 28 stakes wins from 1200m to 2000m is much more impressive in this era.

  • Please don't ever remove this video

  • Mate dont you worry.. this will stay forever.

  • That's great to hear. I loved this horse ever since I laid eyes on him at Warwick Farm before his 2001 Warwick Stakes win. At the time he was still immature and while he'd grown a little taller since his first prep he looked a little light although atheletic. It wasn't untill 12 months later that he bulked up and became one of the best looking thoroughbreds I've ever seen.

  • Absolutely Brilliant. I wouldn't any of his youngsters but the Bonanova one will do fine thankyou.

  • Let me try that again...I wouldn't mind any of his youngsters, even one that came out with three legs (Woodlands take note) I've got no doubt that such a fine looking thoroughbred with one of the most devestating turns of foot one will ever see will provide a huge success as a sire. He'll sire 2yr old slipper winners through to Derby winners and it won't be long before one of Australia's greatest ever racehorse's becomes one of our greatest ever stallions.
