I have a question, I have an iPad 1 with the VGA adapter for the iPad. I need to give a presentation in a week or so. The TV always says NO DEVICE INPUT meaning its not detecting it however when I hook up my laptop it detects it right away.
@DetroitBORG My teacher hooked this up to his Ipad, but it wouldn't play his movie due to copyright stuff. why is the movie playing on ur iPad but not his?
@xpv007 The copyright holder determines this, so no guarantee TV Shows purchased via iTunes will work either. And yes, you can output keynote presentations through this.
@TheBelva85 Google recently enabled Google Document editing for Mobile Devices (like iOS) but I haven't really tried it yet. It will work with iPhone, iPod, and iPad. However, you can't output Safari through the VGA adapter. You can use the free VLC app to sync and playback avi files, there are also other solutions like Cinexplayer or AirVideo.
@asCii88 Wish i could answer that, but only the iPad will show you the battery status or alerts, once depleted you can assume everything will quit working.
@applefreak66 Correct, you can't output the iPad screen beyond the playback of video. And yes, the ABC Player and Netflix player will output video through the VGA adapter.
@apotikallo Not sure I fully understand the question, but YouTube video quality is excellent on the iPad, it's never slow. Video quality is downgraded when watching YouTube videos over the 3G network, but that's only a concern if you are using a 3G iPad on a 3G network.
@rucciaamodt The VGA Adapter only outputs certain content, such as video podcasts or video from certain apps like the ABC Player. Make sure you try outputting a source that is known to work with the VGA Adapter. Some DRM content from iTunes won't work at all. I haven't used VGA Expedition so I can't test it. Try a different monitor as well, might be an issue with the display.
@ilovemacintosh100 It's a monitor from my PC graveyard, I don't have any peripheral monitors in use anymore. This was actually sitting in my basement unused for a few years.
@danhellerjr I don't know of VGA output hacks, but there are Wi-Fi VNC viewers on Jailbroken iPhones that allow you to display the iPhone's screen on your computer over Wi-Fi. Veency is one of them.
I purchased two of these when we got our iPads... all I can say is "WHAT A POS!!!"
I sent them right back... I was thinking "VGA Adapter" meant everything that goes to the screen of the iPad would go to the monitor screen... not no.. but HELL no...
@gspotr69 Part of the problem has to do with resolving how to display the iPad UI on non-standardized monitors or projectors. A full-featured OS has the ability to scale and adapt to the resolutions of different monitors and sources (thanks to a huge array of drivers), but the iOS doesn't have this capability and the hardware is incapable of scaling the output. So that means the iPad can only output a standard video at a standard resolution which the input device can use and scale itself.
@deshonlive Only Apple has access to this capability, developers can virtualize their apps on a computer, but only their apps. So right now there is no way to directly output the display of the iPad.
@oscarroseforest1 From what I can tell, only DRM movies will not playback over the VGA adapter. So if you sync movies to your iPad that have no DRM restrictions, you will be fine.
Thanks. I wanted to see how Keynote worked with external displays. It's pretty disappointing. Even the iPhone remote for Keynote shows the next slide. By the way, can the iPhone Keynote app be used to control the iPad? Most of the time my computer is up in the tech room while I'm on the stage controlling it via bluetooth remote control but there doesn't seem to be a way remotely control the iPad.

@kockgunner To my knowledge, there is no app to remotely control the iPad from another device. Part of the issue is that Apple doesn't allow remote access to the iPhone OS so perhaps there are some jail breaking options.

Question i own a macbook and have a similar adapter that will let me connect my macbook to a monitor. when my macbook is connected and i turn the brightness all it practically blanks the screen allowing me to enjoy a movie with out getting distracted from it showing on two screens. Assuming you have your ipad connected to the keyboard can you also turn the brightness all the way down to enjoy a movie or youtube video?
This is a very disappointing adapter. I expected this VGA adapter to be what Jobs used during the Keynote speech about the iPad to show the screen on the projector.... Lame.
This is a good review and convinces me that I'll not spend any time trying to watch iPad video content on my TV. Instead, I'll stick to playing it through my MacBook which uses DVI with no restrictions (that I know of) regarding content. Apple has its own reasons for severely limiting iPad output, but this somewhat un-transparent decision diminishes the value of the product.
I have tried the Iphone RCA adapter, it worked great....for a while, the first Itunes movie selected played fine, but once I shut it down the picture froze on the tv, and when I tried to resume anything, the frozen pic from the first video stayed frozen on the tv and the next movie played on the ipad, but the audio came out the tv. Even when I disconnected and reconnected the cable, the same frozen picture appeared....more work must be done, sucks if it can't be hooked up to a tv either
Pretty bad you can't watch a movie you paid for, next you will tell me Netflix doesn't work...lucky for me the screen is big enough, after all my TV is only 8 inches anyway, but I do have a nice 23" monitor.
