I got kicked out of my school due to my age I'm 18....so I left in term two and I didn't tell centerlink until the end of the school year...so now in November I told them everything that happened and they put me on job seeker payment which is $255 a fortnight with a $2 thousand debt...every fortnight they will be taking half the money from my centerlink money until it's all payed off so I'm living off $80 a fortnight.
Why do you think Centrelink hires security guards to stand and watch over the lines of elderly, sick, disabled or unemployed? Because occasionally one of them snaps under the stress caused by Centrelink's mismanagement. The government only gets away with it because these are society's most underprivileged.
Further more you dont have a month to pay you can have deduction taken out per fortnight also what i cant understand is you would of had pci interviews 2wk or 6wk etc time frames (personal contact interview )to catch up at your local centrelink office which give you the ability to check your reporting history and inform them on any changes.
only you or your nominee can declare your income which you can do over the phone or self service (online) or into local office. You wouldnt get a debt for 2000 odd dollars for just one fortnight. whats obviously happened is. you didnt declare your income for a period of time. or grossly under declared. you probably got a letter saying we know youve started work which probably promted you to go in and declare (albeit probably 6 months after starting work)

I was presented with the exact same situation, ask Centrelink for all your records for your account... It shows when you contacted them, what documents you presented etc... I managed to escape paying them back $1650.00 that the said I owed... Reason was, I was working, they said that's fine, and kept my regular payments... If you feel you've been done wrong by a stuff up, certainly appeal it! Centrelink are in my good books at the moment, coz I got $1200 for starting my uni degree. Cheers

whats a murther? the reason c'link is so dispised in this situation is that when the challenges come c'link do not need to prove what was said by 1 of the 25000 staff elsewhere but merely that the decision is right and calculated correctly based on all available facts according to the social security act unless there is a PROVABLE case of negligence. fair bet that there was a language breakdown on this one. its likely either u or your employer were declaring net wages as opposed to gross.

I HAD THE SAME SORT OF ISSUE.. i was working as a casual i would delclar my earnings and i also gave them my payslip.. everything was good untill a YEAR latter i recived a BILL FOR $900. i asked how they told me i declared my earning wrong and i asked how is that possible as i brought my pay slip in with me each fortnight they got all the payslips for a month at a time with my job and centrelink made out that i was working 7 days a weeks stragiht for 32 weeks no DAY OFF.
when you knew they had the wrong amounts you should have told whoever you were speaking to at centerlink that you were not happy and want to speak with someone else ... and then you should have called your employer and cleared the matter up with them ...

Some centrelink workers are really rude and STUPID!. I once had one who changed my income to weekly rather than fortnightly. As a result I was no longer entitled to a payment.

See the video 6 week rule because that is all that you have to pay for Centrelink mistakes. iF YOYR PAYMENTS WERE CORRECT FOR THE LAST 6 WEEKS, YOU OWE THEM NOTHING. Always ask (a) about the 6 week rule and (b) always ask what percentage of errors were made when you allegedly made the mistake. i was once breached 50% of my pay..
it was for apparently not showing up to a tafe course,
after 12 months of living off $70 a week they finally addmitted to fucking up,
and said they had verified that i did infact attend, and pass the course pretty much top of the class...
70 x 52 = $3600+... all they gave me back was a lousy 600..
not bad for living off $10 a day, trying to study and pay rent/train tickets etc... lucky the room i had was only 40 a week..
it actually fucked me up pretty bad..

I was presented with the exact same situation, ask Centrelink for all your records for your account... It shows when you contacted them, what documents you presented etc... I managed to escape paying them back $1650.00 that the said I owed... Reason was, I was working, they said that's fine, and kept my regular payments... If you feel you've been done wrong by a stuff up, certainly appeal it! Centrelink are in my good books at the moment, coz I got $1200 for starting my uni degree. Cheers

First off making threats against the staff of centrelink is just wrong, these people are doing a very tough job, they are trying to do the best with the legislation given to them. as far as the property goes your primary residence is not considered an asset but any that you have a claim too whether you choose too or not IS deemable even if it is tied up in disputes with relatives or what not. If your on the title itll show up on the title.

your altimatems are laughed at...sorry. thousands complain, some try to write books actually quoting the social security act, others write letters to politicians. there are about 7 appeal levels, most serious cases get to the ATT level 3 who are non-government oversight comittee. appeal, present NEW evidence(not just poorly constructed rants), appeal again if u fail. anything else is just crap because the process is there for a reason, c'link is insulated from everything else by law.

whats a murther? the reason c'link is so dispised in this situation is that when the challenges come c'link do not need to prove what was said by 1 of the 25000 staff elsewhere but merely that the decision is right and calculated correctly based on all available facts according to the social security act unless there is a PROVABLE case of negligence. fair bet that there was a language breakdown on this one. its likely either u or your employer were declaring net wages as opposed to gross.

I HAD THE SAME SORT OF ISSUE.. i was working as a casual i would delclar my earnings and i also gave them my payslip.. everything was good untill a YEAR latter i recived a BILL FOR $900. i asked how they told me i declared my earning wrong and i asked how is that possible as i brought my pay slip in with me each fortnight they got all the payslips for a month at a time with my job and centrelink made out that i was working 7 days a weeks stragiht for 32 weeks no DAY OFF.

Centrestink claims its the clients responsability to advise of changes..but how can the client control the compotence and proffessional behaviour of its staff?It cant!
Be advised to photocopy and have stamped or recieve receipt no`s for all important updates to file,as most centrestink workers ciuldnt find their arseholes in the dark.

Some centrelink workers are really rude and STUPID!. I once had one who changed my income to weekly rather than fortnightly. As a result I was no longer entitled to a payment.
It was all worked out after awhile, and i was back paid. But the point is why should we all have to go through so much unnecessary crap for other peoples mistakes??. Sure we are all human, but as a public servants they should be doing there jobs correctly! It's a shame.

because since then I have become a solicitor myself.. saves a lot of money when you don't have to pay someone $3000. Court costs are only about $600.

If you want to be a burden to society and leech off of welfare, Centrelink have the right to know of all your assets and income - the privacy act does not protect you from trying nto defraud the commonwealth.
