A beautiful and creative song about the Gods that Be: here's a shout out to all my fellow rockers 55+ who have loved Tull since the early days: as our life extends, let's go forth in this New Year and tell the younger folks about all the great music we had in our younger days....
i have only just got into tull, didnt like them at school in the 70s, but cant get enough of them now, mr anderson only live down the road from swindon x
Definitely not the original..I've memorized it by heart and soul..but still a decent version and very close to the original..I miss the strings tho. Wow..Ian Anderson and Martin Barre..how can ya go wrong with THAT combo!

I'm old school like many others. I'm in the 55+ group. But I won't let my preference fro for studio versions blind me to what is good and true. I just prefer less distraction from music and lyrics that "live" recordings render.
And ride with us young bonny lass --- with the angels of the night. Crack wind clatter --- flesh rein bite on an out-size unicorn. Rough-shod winging sky blue flight on a cold wind to Valhalla. And join with us please --- Valkyrie maidens cry above the cold wind to Valhalla. Break fast with the gods. Night angels serve with ice-bound majesty. Frozen flaking fish raw nerve --- in a cup of silver liquid fire. Moon jet brave beam split ceiling swerve and light the old Valhalla.
@greasemonkeypol This is Tull playing live in their Monte Carlo studio for a BBC radio program. For the show (which aired a month after this was recorded), Ian recorded his flute segments over the tape. That's why you hear his flute sometimes over his voice. (No he wasn't cloned for this.)
This take is from a set of songs for BBC Radio recorded live in Monte Carlo at the mobile studio used for the album. It's all over the net and is called Minstrils In The Red House and if you're a Tull fan you need this more than any other live recording. Yep, this is live in one take. Killer.
@finselBR I am sure this is a re-mix or re-recording of this song. I was alive when it was released originally. It has some differences, subtle though they may be.
I got to see him, Anderson, a few time, at Madison Square Garden when he debuted "Thick As Brick" in the US. They played the entire thing, non-stop, and then most of Aqualung and a few other songs. One of the best shows I ever saw. I also saw him perform "Passion Play", but the best concert was at Westbury Music Fair before they became well know.
@Aqualung1989 Sounds like it. The vocal is slightly different and this version has no orchestral backing. Some of it is certainly recognisable from the original mix though.
@Aqualung1989 No. This is an alternate take. Either that, or a re-recording for radio. This is pretty close to how they'd sound live at the time, so I bet it's done for radio (a bit a-al BBC recordings that artists had to do back then...). Great version, though. Very heavy and raw once the entire band comes in. I like that! :-)
@the16Hobitt This is not from the Minstrel In the Gallery album. This was performed LIVE in BBC studios in May 1975 for the show "Sounds on Sundays". RARE IN DEED
I like this song I like Jethro Tull , but I am Slavic and I am sure Odin do not care for it at all, ... but I like ABBA too :))))) that could be problem I guess :)
I´m a german. And we say and write not Vikings or Valhalla, but we mean the same when we speak Walhalla or Wikings. In Regensburg ( Bavaria) is a Walhalla Hall. For Tourist a point to know a lot of the history about the Germans and the Wikings.
Walhalla means a hall where are the fighters lay down, who fallen in wars! That was only happens by wikings. or german fighters in a lot of wars. Wow!! I had heard the name of Jethro Tull before tonight, but had never gotten around to actually checking him out. A lucky search found this wonderful song - the man is pure genius, and a splendid entertainer, singer, song-writer and story teller. Your video rocks, too - thanks a lot!!!
Jethro Tull is not the name of the singer, it is the name of the band.. The singer's name is Ian Anderson. He sings, he writes lyrics, plays flute and guitar
@HolyMotherofGrid Haha, Jethro Tull is not a "him", besides the 18th century agriculturalist, Ian Andersen is the frontman, its a band with one weird name.
@HolyMotherofGrid The same for me, I've found this song tonight (being showed Minstrel in the Gallery yesterday) and it completely drew me... I'm really into progressive rock from 70. (Focus, King Crimson, and so on) but this guys are absolutely amazing! I've still got my jaw dropped although I've been listening to this song for about half an hour.
@HolyMotherofGrid Please be aware that Jethro Tull is the name of the BAND. IMHO, the best band in the world.
Ian Anderson is the genius of Jethro Tull as its front man, song writer and flautist. Jethro Tull did live once, in the 1600s. He was a British agriculturalist who invented the seed drill. It is his name that gives Jethro Tull its English folk flavor, along with the music of the band.
Well, actually Jethro Tull is an agronomist from the 17th century, the band just took his name. The genius, singer, song-writer, etc., is Ian Anderson (with help of his great partners, of course, 'cause they're genius too!).
This is just for telling you, not for offending you, because I'm really glad to hear that another person has discovered this wonderful band and appreciates it. WELCOME!
@MsPocketMonsters I stand corrected.. and a bit red-faced!! Somehow my education both formal and otherwise, seems to have skipped over Mr. Tull and his important contributions to European agriculture. The band sure is a wonderful contribution to music in general, and i am still completely amazed that although they've sold over 60 million albums, i somehow managed to miss them for 42 years.....
@MKECBS1 lol.... my bad!!! I have had many people point out this faux-pas, so i am by now quite chastised and much better educated :-=). I've also acquainted myself somewhat better with this awesome group's quite extensive artistic output. They deserve to be as famous as Emerson Lake and Palmer.. but somehow just aren't :P.
Sounds like a different version from the album. But hearing this song on a LP with a decent hi-fi stackup is anyway a different story from hearing it on youtube.
Strangely JT quality of sound fits perfect with my Rega speakers. Maybe there's a connection there...
to kulumuli, cree8vision and yz25098uk... I think this is the 25th anniversary box version... the songs there have normally very slight changes compared to the "originals", but in this song the changes are bigger.
i just got the minsteral in the gallery today, i really like this song. very folk influssenced like tulls earler works. very, very nice. nothing else to say
I was born in 1960 and was also a teen in the 70's...I love his voice, flute and acoustic guitar style, too...in my high school yearbook I mentioned J-Tull as one of my favorites - (I was sincere but) I had really only heard very little J-Tull...now 30+ yrs later I have finally got around to exposing myself to more J-Tull (NOTE: I've been a born-again believer since 1983, and I'm careful about lyrical content, etc.)...it's like a J-Tull seed planted in me has finally come to fruition
im a spiritual guy myself davss and i mean absolutely no offense by what im about to say and that's: i think the lord smiles down upon the boys of jethro tull. music after all is a God given talent. :)
Jethro Tull was great because they had that Medieval edge to their music, which was really different and cool. At least, that's why I like them so much. One of the greatest bands ever!
Hey love this track ,thanks so much man. must admit it sounds like vinyl as it has that bassy boomb to it . Love the other Tull tracks aswell. Saw them in concert twice once at Isle of Wight1970 and in Brighton1996 Ian is still brilliant. He made a joke at the interval about now he is older it takes him 20 mins to finish a pint !
This sounds like the rest of the cut of this song as published on "20 Years Of Jethro Tull - The Definitive Collection" - on the album it fades with 'breakfast with the gods..." .... Where did You get it????!!!!
I just told my cousin to download "cold wind to valhalla" for me, and this is what he sent me... some months later, I bought the CD, and I realised this is a different version... and I think I prefer this one than the original. What do you think?
Awesome (: (:

Jethro Tull shaped my youth in my teens in 70s, I love Ian's voice, flute and his acoustic guitar style

Jethro Tull was great because they had that Medieval edge to their music, which was really different and cool. At least, that's why I like them so much. One of the greatest bands ever!

Ah, they never disappoint.
