I got lost when he started talking about pivots. This is usually my problem... I lack knowledge of very basic framework that even the introductory courses assume you already have. If you don't have it, where can you get it? I guess nowadays Wikipedia or Google, but that didn't help me back in 1990. I just got intimidated and stayed away from "harder" courses... which killed me in finding a job after I graduated.
That is very useful. I really to be learned from valuable video. finally, i should say, this video improve my self confidence about numerical methods and computational science.
even the guy is the same crystal. i really appreciate this since 50% of the worlds teachers are gutless pussies, having their voices shaking, therefore spoiling the whole show. but not this one.
Why not allow life long students above age 50 to actually earn a degree from passing exams related to your online courses. Many of us were unable to complete degrees earlier in life due to pressures of family and financial obligations. Many of us have become successful as self taught business owners.
This would be a wonderful contribution to society and in particular to our longer living adults who may have a lot to offer back to society.
MIT provides us foreign college students a path to the courses taken by American undergraduates. Thanks to it,we can manage the skills in understanding the lectures given by American professors in English.
I hope I would take the PHD of computer science in MIT in the coming future.
suprising that not many people watch this. why is rap music more prevalent now that we have access to engineering science @ th click of a mouse. people in ancient times would have killed to have this science to change their worlds.
God I am sure the guy knows his course but its truly creepy to see him and a torment of medieveal torture listen to it. Booooooring ohh and thanks for paying for MIT to have a professor that doesn´t worry about grades.
lucirz, this is very true when it comes to instruction. However, MIT and other top schools have opportunities galore that are offered to the students (e.g. high profile research & access to state-of-the-art research facilities, huge libraries, faculty who can be worked with on major research projects, hundreds of campus orgazations and groups, etc.) The top universities offer to their students an abundance of room in which to grow, innovate and contribute.
Going through the on-line videos one can see that unis like MIT, Stanford have professors who are almost all great teachers. I have found there are a lot of great teachers in obscure unis, too. The differences are the uniformity of teaching excellence, the integration of concepts throughout the program, and .... the quality of your fellow students. A whole new level of competition.
Where I come from, the professor just writes down the course in the board, basically a copy paste, every time I attend courses like that ( 98% of them ), a piece of me dies inside...
You are absolutly wrong. There are a lot of people with a degree and a lot of debt ,and a lot of years without a wel paid job. In general, on the world I mean, not only USA ( Im from Spain in Europe). BE CAREFULL.
Ok, but if you want to learn and study dont pay a lot of money if you cant, its not necesary. The best exemple is these kinds of videos. You can learn maths, computation, drawing and fisics with some very good books, practice and a little help of a private tutor ( a lot more cheap, only for doubts).
@q123477 Going to a school such as MIT does not guarantee a good job. It guarantees that your professor knows the material well since their reputation lets them be more selective when it comes to hiring professors. However, knowing the material well does not necessarily mean that the professor teaches well. When you have both, however, you have a great experience. This is the case with Strang and Lewin.
i always wondered how classes were like in top colleges like harvard and MIT. and thanks to videos like this, i now know its the same as any other colleges. in the end, it all comes down to the professor, if you are have knowledgeable and good professor, one that can really really teach, then that's all that matters.
It's really great to see such an old professor showing full energy. Beats me. I gotta stop being lazy and put in smart hard work. Btw thanks for the vid.
You got that right, I had a dream of going to MIT a few years ago but I don't need to now. I can continue with my state school and maybe from these lectures go to graduate school at MIT instead of the undergraduate I initially wanted.
good point, i totally agree with you. I am homeschooled, having previously went to a college in the UK which i stayed for little over a month. It was a disaster, the time flew quick and the teachers were not out for our interest at all.
really informative and interesting
