For some reason I was HOOKED on Half-Life 16 months before its release, and went to Compucenter EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND until its November '98 release. Collected and saved every single scrap of info on it.
Little did I know how big it would turn out. Used to e-mail Gabe Newell as well; nice guy, replied to EVERY SINGLE ONE of my e-mails each week 'til '99.
I thought the $60 for Snow Bros on the NES and $70 for Street Fighter II on SNES was a crazy amount to pay for entertainment as a kid, but $95 for a SNES cart is insane! I hope you still own the box and everything.
@MPK112233 depends if they had battery back-up in them. thats why genesis games were cheaper than snes games because genesis games did not have battery back-up
Are you sure the Game Boy receipt was from the US? That was a Zellers receipt, and I don't think we have them here in the US. $50.00 brand new though? Geez, I guess the lowest price really IS the law at Zellers!
Oh and I hate how many of the newer receipts (1998 and on) are printed on thermal paper. I was shocked to see most of them are not just blank pieces of paper. I guess I should start scanning those!
Cool video man. And I thought I was the only one who saved stuff like this. :P
I put all of my game receipts in a binder. It's crazy how much the old stuff cost. So many people complain about today's prices, but they are actually cheaper now if you think about it. Zaxxon for the Colecovision $69.99, Shadows of the Empire (N64) $89.99! I'm not even going to mention what I paid for my Neo-Geo carts... Ahh the good old days. :P
OMG, I was thinking strangely about showcasing my video game sale receipts dated from 1987 to the present day ( some are also missing ). But you actually did it - lol I have them all in rubberbands and tucked away. Its kinda a nostalgia thing for us ^_^ I'll have to do a clip for all to see sometime.
Heh, my birthday is dec. 21...i was 7 when she bought that....hadn't even heard of TG16 at that age, i was still enjoying my NES and waiting on the SNES to come out
It is absolutly astonishing what they charged for video games back in the day. $80 for a Turbo Graphix 16 game!? Wow... I also rememner when games for the SNES first came out like Street Fighter 2 and they were between $89-99 for a single game!!
aw man, retro that was awesome! video game nostalgia is never bad. i still have some of the Toys R Us Big Toy Book ad catalogs. can you believe SNES games used to be like 50 and 60 bucks back in the day?! and PSX used to be like $399.99?! man...this vid makes me recall one of the last new SNES games i got at R' Us. I think I paid (well rents) like 60 bucks for Super Mario RPG. Can't believe NES games were even more expensive even before that. Wonder how much my NES Mario 2 was?
Dude that's awesome that you still have these receipts. It interesting to see how much things were back in the day. Cool vid Ed. If you consider games today are around the same price as they were back in the day it's pretty cool.
Very interesting I haven't seen another video like this anywhere. Brings back some memories of how much stuff cost back in the day. You were pretty smart to get the super nes in Oregon you didn't have to pay sales tax.
LOL I had to come back and watch this again it kicked sooo much ass! 7th Saga for 108 buck sounds right eh? I remember my GF at the time called me from the mall to tell me she saw this game 7th Saga and did I want it. lol yes!
My friend found a credit card in a 711 parking lot. We went shoping the next day down in Nanaimo and with it he bought 2 Super Nintendo sets, one for me and one for him, the deluxe one with 2 controlers and super mario world. Nothing beats free! He never got busted either. They loked at him a little weird when he slaped 2 Snes on the counter.
I bought a TON of consoles/games back in the 80/90s. I am probably slightly older than you are, as I am the one who bought most of the stuff (your parents are indeed generous). I am glad I didn't keep all the receipts. I would probably be crying right now :)
what a great idea for a video! I could only imagine the pile of receipts I would have if all of them were kept til this day....that would be so much fun to look back on!
So much money spend on videogames for a kid in only four years? You must have been pretty spoiled as a kid... Your mom seems pretty cool, for saving those receipts!.
Nice video of receipts! Also...nice older review of THE HAUNTED CASTLE! Yes...I agree with you about HC...it looks crappy...lol! Have a great day! You ARE the RETROGAMER!!!!!!!
God, those games back then were soooo expensive! Even more than today. I never thought about keeping receipts, but after watching this, i think I will from now on :)
This is such an awesome video. Thank you! I can't believe anyone paid that much for carts back then! The most my mom ever spent (or let me spend) was $50. That is why I didn't like the SNES, the stuff was so overpriced.
I found Mortal Kombat II in an old box the other day, and when I opened the case it stillh ad handwritten notes from my dad inside, detailing characters movesets. I thought it was kinda interesting
