The Dutch needed 317 yrs and they never controlled it well. Indonesia is doing better than ever... without the Dutch.

@TheDutchKnight That's true. Around 1611 - 1619 the VOC destroyed Jayakarta and built Batavia, conquered some important trading bases violantly and went bankrupt in the 1790ties. From 1800 on, the Dutch terrorized continuously the archipelago until it reached the current size of Indonesia.

When seeing how people lived the " VOC " and being aboard replica's of the VOC ships here in The Netherlands, I'm partly proud and amazed of how people back in those days where able of doing all this. I'm indo, my mother is 2nd gen dutch living in indonesia my dad is javanese. we live in canada now, but this is what I think. the dutch are better tradesman than the native indo. so at the end they control everything. I do not blame the dutch, but the corruption and mismanagement of the indo gov. we should have a leg start with what the dutch leave us, but instead we destroy it. the criminal and civil law is still based on the old dutch law. that's my view.

@paspalax the question is how to bring the standard of living to the dutch's standard of living. they have clean and enjoyable canals and rivers. ours in jakarta is full of garbage and squatters living on the river banks. how we can get the old tram system running again, we have them till the 50s and they just disappeared after. they have democratic and honest gov, we have a lot of curroptions. I think indonesia should just copy the dutch system. it seems to be working.

Thats good to hear. But then again I believe the Netherlands has always been famous for liberty and tourism anyways (thats what we Canadians think). Really wish I can visit there someday

I'm indo, my mother is 2nd gen dutch living in indonesia my dad is javanese. we live in canada now, but this is what I think. the dutch are better tradesman than the native indo. so at the end they control everything. I do not blame the dutch, but the corruption and mismanagement of the indo gov. we should have a leg start with what the dutch leave us, but instead we destroy it. the criminal and civil law is still based on the old dutch law. that's my view.

It's good to see there are still people with some good common sense, sure, what we Dutch did was horrible at times, massacres, slavery etc. we did some pretty horrible things, but I just hate to see ignorance coming from Indonesians who keep bringing up colonialism as an excuse as to why the country and people are poor and corrupt, I don't hate Indonesia, I hate it's policy and government.

@paspalax the question is how to bring the standard of living to the dutch's standard of living. they have clean and enjoyable canals and rivers. ours in jakarta is full of garbage and squatters living on the river banks. how we can get the old tram system running again, we have them till the 50s and they just disappeared after. they have democratic and honest gov, we have a lot of curroptions. I think indonesia should just copy the dutch system. it seems to be working.
