  • THANK YOU ANGELO

  • I remember seeing Angelo on British television performing this in the late '70's when I was a teenager still at school. The song has stayed in my head for over 30 years and I've only just rediscovered it thanks to YT. Excellent musician, however I do think it sounds better in the original Italian, Alla fiera dell' Est. Does Signor Branduardi still perform live concerts and if so, does he perform in Britain sometimes?

  • great performance

  • The song is based upon the Jewish had gadya which is sung at the end of the Passover seder. we often use this tune in Israel while singing had gadya.

  • This song is a translation based on the Jewish Had Gadya sung at the end of the passover seder.

  • @MrAvraham4 go to hell Zionist liard

  • This translation was done by Pete Sinfield and the title track of Branduardi's first English record, Highdown Fair. That LP was the reason why I came to know his music. A great traditional song and a great musician.

  • At last, now that I am forty, I understand what this song is about. Thank god for the english version :o)

  • much better in the italic version. but still great

  • wawwww che arrangiamento!!!!!!!

  • i am happy to hear that people make this kind of muzik! its great! perfect structure!

  • how old was he at that time?

  • junk music

  • @adrianofsaraujo

ignorant. That's all I need to say. Branduardi is a poet.

  • This is part of the service at passover meals. That in turn throws it's origins. Perhaps he should have done it in Hebrew too.

    Buona serata a tutti!!!

  • @jollo87 buona serata anche a te

  • 5/5

  • One of the most important European musicians, creating music based upon the Great European popular tradition as it comes from the medieval ages, then that it seems that people were much closer one to the other than it seems or we think. Very beloved also to us Greeks with the reach tradition which steps one foot to the west and the other to the east.

  • Go west son, go west.

  • classic spielen

  • the Italian version is much nicer. a good music arrangement though and an interesting Medieval sort of sound.

  • branduardi...a joy bringer...

  • auf italienisch ist´s schöner

    in italiano è più bello

    in english is more beautiful

    en italiano es mas bonito

    en italien est plus beau

  • Ein wunderschönes Lied... lang, lang ist´s her......

  • he is the really italian menestrel... great artist

  • Angelo nagyon ott van a toppon!!!

    Szeretem a zenéjét

  • Immenso Angelo Grazie.....

  • A.Branduardi is a greatly gifted musician. He is popular and he deserves it well.

  • what you see creepy in him and in his face is the passion he puts when he does music...

  • I do absolutely agree with you.

Va mooolto meglio in inglese!

  • beh..le parole sono praticamente le stesse ^^

  • grandissimo Branduardi...

  • I saw him in Germany in 1980. It was the best concert I have ever been to. Highdown Fair is the English title of this song. The album jacket says," Highdown Fair was freely inspired by a Jewish Passover song. Thanks to David"

  • This is virtually an exact translation of Had Gadya sung at Passover seder tables in Jewish homes all around the world. The great Israeli singer Hava Albershtein used this musical setting in an absolutely amazing interpretation of the original Aramaic I think in the 1980s -- very, very powerful!

  • Here's something to think about, If there was an Italian travel film made, narrated by Francesco da Mosto with the musical accompaniment by Angelo Branduardi, would you ever need to watch another film, ever again?

    Bravissimo!!!!

  • Fantastic!

  • Can anyone give me some background to this song?

  • Hi there,

this song is actually a jewish song, which describes the history of Israel.

I think it sung during Easter time, and it's called Had Gadyà.

    I hope I m not wrong! :-)

  • Thank you. Although if this is a history of Israel I am suprised there are so many animals!

Had Gadya? I shall do some digging.

    Thank you again.

  • been looking for this under 'Hightown fair'. Couldn't find it. Perhaps write the name in the title???

  • Highdown Fair :) D, not T

  • Really? I first saw this on TV and it said 'Hightown Fair' on the screen.

  • The lyrics of this song are actually a modified version of a traditional jewish song, sung on the eve of Passover (to keep the children awake). It means to say that in the end everything must succumb to the will of God (who kills the Angel of Death, who ...).

It seems to me that the melody too is based on a traditional one but I'm not sure about that.

  • Hi!

The melody is based on trad. Jewish song, see Had Gadya(?) on you tube.

  • thank you for this extra information! that is interesting! I had the record by Angelo Branduardi already 25 years ago and I never knew! So, Thanks!! :)

  • You're welcome. Great music.

  • When you post me a video I KNOW it must be good. And it is - great!

  • bravo

in inglese "my father's brought a little white mouse"

  • Grande artista.Grazie

  • WoW!!!

  • Hey. very nice. i'm a jewish , my parents come from Greece with a Ladino tradition . They were sing me this beauty song. thanks alot.

  • this a variation of a song name CHAD GADIA ... in the jewish tradition, and it a bit different

  • Yeah man. Branduardi say of himself: I'm a celtic-jew. This song is a jewish song. In the LP (1976) you can read: "Alla fiera dell'est: liberamente ispirata a un canto pasquale ebraico; grazie a David" [David Zard, his friend and his producer].

So, he sing another jewish song: "DONA DONA"

  • On a wagon bound for market; there's a calf with a mournful eye. High above him, there's a swallow Winging swiftly through the sky. How the winds are laughing: They laugh with all their might. Laugh and laugh the whole day through; and half the summer's night. Dona, dona dona dona Dona dona dona do Dona dona dona dona dona dona dona do
  • Stop complaining said the farmer Who told you, a calf to be? Why don't you have wings to fly with Like the swallow so brave and free? How the winds are laughing They laugh with all their might Laugh and laugh the whole day through And half the summer's night. Calves are easily bound and slaughtered; Never knowing the reason why, But whoever treasures freedom; like the swallow has learned to fly. How the winds are laughing
  • They laugh with all their might

Laugh and laugh the whole day through

    And half the summer's night.

    Dona..Dona..

  • Bellissimo, di nuovo l'Angelo salteggiante che piace a me.

  • Bellissima versione!

  • Grazie Mao, stupenda Highdown Fair!!!
