  • I still have a demo tape from these guys called 'excerpts'. "All Fags aboard" is great!

  • great video. would love to see some video from the moroccan vd days.. or anything where rob and his set are visible. whoever has it, give it up!

  • That second song is "Fanning The Queen (Quaquatora)" from Men Who Pause. I would wager that today's much-lauded Baltimore scene owes much to the antics of these Norfolk transplants -- if not in terms of music, then in terms of absurd humor and live madness. The first time I saw them, in fall 1994 at some sort of '70s night at Memory Lane, the infamous "buttcake" (on guitarist Jim Glass's posterior) made an appearance. Oswald is a force of nature.

  • In ref to the first comment... i think i was the friend with the kitten they stayed with.... man, Buttsteak was always FUN!

  • haaa of course you were....it's meeee....secretly on here not using my name. but you already got the link from my farcebook. :)

  • ahhh Buttsteak was one great band...tho never quite the same without Julie. i may have even been at this show. they slept at my friend's place after a Midtown Music Hall show one night and their kitten got trapped in the drummer's hair. nice.

  • Buttsteak at the height of their powers here. The shows surrounding the MWP record were legendary. Too bad Ron is blocking the superb drumming of Mr. Oswald but you get the idea - best drummer I've ever seen. Thanks for posting!

  • Those shows from '94 at the Highlander were awesome. Would love to see them again. Buttsteak just wiped out whoever else was on the bill.

  • I might be able to help with more Buttsteak video footage, if there is interest, I will post.. This might be my footage as a matter of fact. I also have two shows with Julie from 94...? don't know... evs... LMK if I should/ if it's ok that I post. Ron...? Mike...?

  • @dirtbuck Go for it, I would love to see more footage, as I have little idea what we actually looked like.

  • yeah. rob oswald is truly one of the greatest drummers. yeah.

  • I'm near certain this was September 1995in the club attached to the Highlander. Apollo 13 was out at the time, and Ron made a crack that if anyone was considering becoming an astronaut he'd advise against it. In the context of the performance, it was a knee-slapper. That's how I remembered it. Any additionl help is appreciated. :)

  • Yeppers good memory. We opened for the local (GA) brilliance of Stool Sample, who indeed did use a real toilet on stage, both metaphorical and actual.

  • hey DSI.... it would be awesome if you posted some more of the Buttsteak footage.or even some of their related bands.... love to see some Nipple, Das Jah, or footage from the original version of the Lee Harvey Keitel Band. thanks

  • Their Roots were in the Barking Spiders, Nocturnal Zoo and the Heretics... All Hail Hampton 1986

  • after all these years they still go down as one of my favorite norfolk bands. before they ended buttsteak they re-started an old side project of Ron Spencer's called The Lee Harvey Keitel Band. They were just as enjoyable as Buttsteak, if not more. i wish someone had some video of them.

  • I saw this show. I also saw a couple of Buttsteak shows at the same venue a year earlier. Julie McDermott was with the band at the time. They were the most exciting live band I saw in the 90s without question. Their energy was off the chart. I really miss them.

  • Thanks for posting this! These guys were truly awesome and one of a small handful of great bands in Baltimore at that time. They never received the recognition that they deserved for their songwriting (especially in their later period). Three of the four pictured here went on to become the Lee Harvey Keitel Band which was equally amazing, if equally unfortunately named. I had the pleasure of seeing both bands many times in Baltimore and elsewhere and really can't recommend them enough.

  • Sweet. My old band Syrup USA opened up for Buttsteak at the 1994 Loud Music Festival in North Hampton, MA. ...if memory serves. It was awesome to see that drummer play live.

  • I love that!! You guys rock!!!
