@roberttheperson housing is necessary because of its special lens, and it is also a small heatsink for the diode... it is only a few bucks per piece, so it is the best option for DIY lasers...

@albpoolshark 22x likely requires more power than the 16x, it might be slightly more powerful, but could potentially not work at all or drain the batteries a lot faster.
