this is sad for UT. i lived in knoxville for 6 years, and i know what a part of the community he is. the problem with college football now is that it's become a business, and if your not winning, then new recruits won't come, and then you get worse recruits, which makes you lose more, and then you have empty seats, and the alum won't donate. it's a big cycle. phil and vicki will pull threw.
I'm not a Tennessee Football fan - mostly because of these situations. There is too much emphasis on winning, and the money that's involved in the program. Sometimes, you just have years that aren't as good - and even though I'm not a supporter, I really think this man has gotten chewed up for all the wrong reasons. It would be good to see people stand behind this man, and stand behind the team. I can see if they've had 2 or 3 consecutive years of embarrassing failure - this is a little extreme.
2005 and 2008. There are your two years of embarrassing failure.
The athletic department makes its contributions to the university itself, and how much they can contribute depends on success.
As for standards, when fans of Florida, Southern Cal, Oklahoma, et al lower their standards, I'll gladly lower mine. Seeing as how Tennessee before this past season had been the nation's winningest program since 1925, above all those other programs I mentioned, I don't think that's going to happen.
The Sec is too difficult a Confrence to go undefeated and if you just have one loss your not going to the National Championship. Fulmer is Tennessee and as a true Tennessee Fan who when we lose Still says "Go Vols!" and when we win I say "Go Vols!" I believe Tennesse Fans should pony up and request ,no Shout to the Athletic Department to Ask Fulmer back .for those who disagree i'd like to rephrase Davy Crockett "Gentlemen, you can go to Hell I'm going back to Tennessee!"
Truly a sad day. Seems that too many people are all about wins and losses. However, Tennessee ranks in the Top 3 when it comes to graduating its football players in the SEC. KUDOS to you Coach Fulmer for doing more than just focusing on football. One bad season doesn't determine the success of the entire program over the past 18 years. A "Tennessee Victory" is deeper than who comes in 1st.
Unfortunately, you don't have a grip on the situation. BTW, I'm an Alabama fan. You need to understand that, at a school like Tennessee (or Alabama or any major football school) the cost to the university of having a declining program is enormous. This has both nothing, and everything, to do with "loyalty". Are you loyal to the university, its financial well-being, its students, and faculty, or are you loyal to a man that is not performing up to expectation.
coach fulmer has won seventy five percent of his games, two sec championships, competed in three (i think) others, a national championship and has always been a class act in the presses. he has done more for ut than any other living person and i love the way the little ohio weasel (hamilton) got dissed. it's a blue time for the big orange.
I hope after Coach Fulmer leaves that UT football continues to struggle for a while. The unloyal fans and athletic department here in Tennessee need to be taught a lesson. No one can win all the time. I am ashamed of the athletic department and director for doing this to Coach Fulmer, but I am even more ashamed and disappointed in these hateful fans, most of whom have never darkened the doors of a high school let alone a college. Thank goodness basketball season starts soon.
Go away Fulmer!! Get out of here!!!!!!
