@4326798 Not so much. If you notice the magnets on top of the globe itself. A sensor in the top measures the magnetic field and adjust the internal electromagnet within the base to keep it at a constant height. That is why is seem to move up and down just a bit. It's constantly adjusting. It isn't really that complicated

This is fun to do. Did you see the guy who floated an upside-down lightbulb, then lit it up?

I found that this tended to be unstable in the long term; I could get it to hold place, but a gradual vertical "wobble" began, and eventually it'd either get to the top and stick, or drop out of the magnetic field, and drop! Didn't have time to debug that part. -- thanks,

It's not that simple!

If it was set up as you say, the globe would be attracted to the magnet which was pulling the hardest on it (the closest). As it gets closer, the stronger the magnetic attraction, so it will accelarate. It would be an unstable system.

Instead, I imagine there is a magnetic field sensor in the "C frame" which continually varies the strength of the electromagnet above the globe. The closer the globe gets, the weaker the voltage sent to the electromagnet.
