I see a post that says " songs didn't last long in the sixties" NOW THAT'S FUNNY! Only about 50 years or so, so far. So many songs are remakes, and for example, " Mony Mony" by Tommy James and the Shondelles. Big in it's day for sure. So much so, that Billy Idol did a remake in the 80's that was again, all over the radio, bringing A new generation into yesterdays music. It happens more then you think! I dare say, "simple man" is DEFINITELY NOT A SHINE DOWN original!
@bigfootskitty I didn't see the post you are talking about but is it possible they might have meant that they didn't last long as in 2 and 1/2 minutes rather than 5 or 6 minutes?
The drummer is in Bradenton Florida, down south....he still plays once in awhile, jamming with don woodruff on guitar, mat coates on keys and bobby sepulveda on bass, they have a great time. down south !
Guess it depends on when you were born and who you heard sing this first. I couldn't even stand to listen to the Ramones sing this. About made me throw up but I love this one!
Guess it depends on when you were born and who you heard sing this first. I couldn't even stand to listen to the Ramones sing this. About made me throw up but I love this one!
@Vega3rd Well the Ramones version has that amped up New York punk style to it. But what makes this version (the original) so great is in fact, its stripped down, very basic garage-rock sound. Nothing fancy, nothing stylish. Much like a high school band might sound like.
I tend to feel the 'soul' of the song more in this form, than the more stylized Ramones version. Just my opinion.
Grew up in Springfield Mass. We were fortunate to have a couple of under age clubs where this music was the standard. The Hive, the Lenanese Club and the west Springfield Hullaboo Club. The best of times.
@ralphyboy25 - You can DEFINITELY dance to it. How do know? I tore up the floor in 1967 at the CYO dance to this very song.......not only me - but the entire freshman class! We sweated like there was no tomorrow (it was about 150 degrees in that bingo hall!)
@MsJollycholly Hi. Thanks, that is a great reminiscence!
I think in my early school dance years they tended to play more doo-wop than garage rock. Actually it didn't really matter what they played - I had two left feet and undoubtedly looked rather foolish out on the dance floor. ;-)
@laelamarie1 yeah - ralphie boy probably remembers like I do, how the dj would show up carrying his 'suitcase' full of 45's. No elaborate sound system though, just big speakers, sometimes broken, but it mattered not as long as he played our requests! (usually the local or near local radio dj - getting some extra moolah while off duty. They NEVER looked like they sounded, though. Great times - great song - great memory. thank you ralphie boy!
@ChrisMarie93 You were born when God intended, ChrisMarie. It was fun in the '60s/70's, the music and all and we had all our lives still ahead of us!! That's you and those your age, NOW!! Take full advantage and be sure to give our era a good "Listen". Make use of that "Little Bit 'O Soul"! Peace and God Bless... :)
I never thought I'd be one of those people who gripes about the music the kids are listening to. And I kept it going through the 90s, but WTF.! Rock is dead. Most of pop has lost it's soul. And country has become bad pop with a twang. Even someone with talent like Lady Gaga writes 1/4 of a good song and then sings the same lyrics over and over. Example: Poker Face.
Wow! Thanks for posting this good-memory provoking song. Sophomore in High School, riding The Wave of The "British Invasion" and America strikes back in so many formidable ways and Bands, like The Music Explosion and this song. Absolutely no better time to be a teen (Obviously Bias) than the 60's!!! And "Little Bit 'O Soul" lyrics and beat still apply & move & groove ya, 44 years later!! Got the 45 for 77, cents if I remember right. Solid Gold! Main Thing, after 39 years, My Girly's not gone. :)
@MrVapourtrail71 Thanks for the comeback and well-wishes, much appreciated! It's been a great relationship. Wish the best for you and yours as well. I was class of '69, she was a '71er also! :) God Bless...
I'm 16 and I LOVE the music from the 60s and 70s. I have an experiment to try out now. If you are under the age of 18 and like this song / music, like the comment.
@AlecBoy006 Go into your mom and dad's "stash" and get their old vinyl LP's and bring them to the dances............Or hire me as your DJ and I'll bring all of the "kick ass" oldies you can think of and then some.....
@AlecBoy006 you had dances in highschool? I thought that died out years ago...I graduated in '99 and other than jr prom and prom we didnt have anything that resembled a dance that I can recall...
@Heegoop I'm 30 and like a WIDE range of music. I like Korn and slipknot and alot of other modern bands. No pop or rap really... But I LOVE OLDIES! I listen to more of that than anything else!
@Heegoop I actually agree. And remember that I almost only listen to new music. Nowadays many bands and artists are so eager to earn fame that they use autotune and other things to boost their chances. I miss the times when music actually meant both happiness and talent.
Great song...always makes me smile. It was definitely a great time in my life.. The freedom and carefree times of our youth...pass to quickly....Only these songs can take us back to those times and places...even if it is only for a minute or 2...
Wow what memories this song brings back. Love this song even though it was bubblegum radio still a great song. Wonderful time of life. Thanks for posting it

Once in a while when the Mets are in Citi Field, the organist plays this song. When my mother hears it she uncontrollably sings this song.

A garage band, with a simple chord progression, and seemingly simple (but deeper) lyrics. A personal mantra of mine:
And when you're in a mess and feel like cryin' ............just remember this little song of mine.......
As you go through life trying to reach your goal.....just remember what I said about a little bit of soul.....
(Nice beat too LM1)
