I was completely fooled by this as a kid. I never recognized Jirras (Kira in the US dub) as being Godzilla. And they barely even disquised him. Just some yellow paint. Removing his neck frill was such a silly move too. The jig is up. I;m pretty sure that I did not recognize Godzilla because I was not yet familiar with the character. I saw Godzilla vs. Megalon and Son of Godzilla shortly after Ultraman was canceled in my area. And he looked a good bit diffrent in those films.

What's funny is that TOHO knew that it's audience would recognize Jiras was really just the Godzilla suit with some paint splotches and a neck frill. They made zero attempt to really try to fool us. There are refrences to the monster being "familar" and "I wonder if we'll see him again". And when Ultraman tears off that neck thing, he almost seems to be saying "Aha! I knew you were Godzilla." I think some of the other Godzilla monster costumes were used in Ultraman as well.

Tsuburaya studios bought the costume back in the 70's and added a frill and called it 'Jiras' because they kinda ran out of ideas for monsters. :P

Well, It bears a very convincing resemblance to godzilla, with the spikes and all (especially when he loses his frill, he looks even more like the good old showa godzilla.) But, he's a monster called jiras. Although, I'm assuming that the creators of ultraman "borrowed" the suit from toho co.

Eiji Tsuburaya, FX man for Toho studios, has a son named Akira, who owns the company that created Ultraman (TBS-Tsuburaya Broadcasting Systems)

Because of the father-son relation and and their positions in their respective companies, there were a lot of trade-offs in monster costumes, as well as the strong resemblance to Toho's visual and sound fx in the Ultraman series.

The Baragon suit was used to death as the made other Ultra monsters, for one thing.

This fight is the only fight in Ultraman history where Ultraman actually stops to give his enemy a moment of respect, no doubt a nod of thanks to Toho for letting them use the suit.

@ak12montvale It was the 2nd time the Mosugoji suit was used in the Ultra series. The 1st time it was used was in episode 1 of ULTRA Q. The suit was more heavily disguised to create a different looking monster, named Gomes... but you could still tell that it was the Godzilla suit. But in episode 10 of ULTRAMAN the Mosugoji suit was garely disguised at all. Just put some yellow paint on it and give it a frilly fin on its neck. The monster is named Jirass... Kira in the United States.
