I met Phill in 1974 at Jesus Barn in Pensilvania and at Christ's Castle. We had some time together talking about Jesus People movement. He was a new born Christian like me. He is the best in all spects. Bless u brother. Dirceu, from Brazil.
There are many here onyou tube that either play or at least attempt to play this song. Of course, it's a classic 40 something year old song and even Eric plays it differently all the time. However, if you guys enjoy quality Beatle REPRODUCTIONS, there is only ONE BAND here to listen to and they are not what I consider a tribute band, they are like the keepers of the flame...true to every note and they are, The FAB FAUX.. I would NOT want to solo next to Phil Keaggy. Despite the fact that he's one of the nicest, most humble people I've ever seen, he's one of the greatest guitarists out there. Talk about pressure!!
The only break I heard was at 6:42, so it seemed to be a good place to change memory cards, on the wind-down rather than in the middle of some earlier juicy riffs.
Thank you for posting this rare moment among stellar guitarists. I only hope that George found the peace that Phil and I know.
@ mottolaworld1 This was an unrehearsed jam. The solo was off the top of Phil's head from decades ago. Try to play it that way. Clapton took many takes in the studio to get it just right.
@sounddude51 and @mottolaworld1- Check out Steve Lukather, Jeff Healy and some others doing this song. Great guitarists, who probably grew up listening to this song from The Beatles. It must be hard for any musician to get into a "zone" of his/her own, playing a 'cover' of ANY song, and especially one like this. (And we listeners grew up listening to this song, remembering every little thing). PK's own work stands up better than most of his covers, except maybe for 'Baby Blue'.
@medicinalsnowball He is actually not in his full voice, he is in a register that we call mix voice. It is a blend of the head and chest register. Look up Brett Manning, he is arguably the best vocal coach on earth, he explains it well.
Actually, Mr. Greenberg plays an amazing solo. He's incredible. It just seems very cocky to walk up on stage, plug in, and belt out a solo while another band is playing. And, it's obvious that Mr. Keaggy takes it as a challenge- He takes it up a notch as an answer. Greatness.
I love the fact that Keaggy enjoys sharing the spotlight with other talented musicians. It's not all about him. He likes to invite people like Mike Pachelli and Randy Stonehill to jam with him or do a concert together. Together we can all make better music.
The "goof" is Kenny Greenberg, who happens to be one of the finest guitar players/producers/songwriters in the Nashville scene. Anyone who Thinks he got "owned" clearly hasn't a frickin' clue. Phil is a virtuoso while Kenny is more of a "feel" player......probably more conducive to the blues, really.
I was still a young teenager when Stevie Ray Vaugn died. I wish he were still around today so I could watch him play and enjoy his gifts more and more. I can not understand why anyone would want one of the most gifted arists ever to hang it up and walk away. Entropy56 just doesn't appreciate talent. I will enjoy the greats as long as I can.
Sounds like someone's been drinking that blazing Cuyahoga River water. As a young guitarist myself I saw Phil about 30+ years ago, too, and I'm still a fan and so is my 24 year old better-guitarist-than-I-could-ever-hope-to-be son. Go watch Keaggy's song "Reunion" on youtube and tell me that man belongs in a rocking chair. HA! I hope he lives to be Les Paul old and still plays then. I'm just upset we missed Glass Harp playing in Cleveland last month.
Fires plagued the Cuyahoga River beginning in 1936 when a spark from a blow torch ignited floating debris and oils. The largest river fire in 1952 caused over $1 million in damage to boats and a riverfront office building. Fires erupted on the river several more times before June 22, 1969, when a river fire captured the attention of Time magazine, which described the Cuyahoga as the river that "oozes rather than flows" and in which a person "does not drown but decays."

I saw this guy several times in person 33 years ago and I am shocked how he has declined. When I was a kid Rock and Roll was for young people. People with gray hair or no hair at all don't belong. It is a travesty.
I once had a ticket to see Andres Segovia in concert. I never did because he died on me. Instead they replaced my ticket with Isaac Stern. Now he's dead. They played serious grown up music.
who's the best is so subjective because it's like comparing apples and oranges all I know is Phil is my personal favorite first listened to a Glass Harp song Changes in 1970 on a collection of artist albumn and I played it in to the ground not even knowing who phil was
I am from youngstown and that is not true about van halen or hendrix saying that phil is the best (although he is as good or better) if you ask phill he will humbly say that he is the shortest guitar player - YTown Loves you Phil
AMEN!!! We LOVE Phil! I am originally from Vienna...lived in Ytown from 1974-1986...Austintown, Boardman, Southside (ha). I remember Phil at The Barn in Austintown (Glass Harp days)..Champion Roller Arena, and do you remember the Freakout? Lots of great folks back there!
Actually it was on the Johnny Carson Show when Eddie Van Halen was a guest. He had just been voted as the number one guitarist in a Playboy Poll and Johnny asked Eddie what it felt like to be the best guitarist in the world. Eddie's response - "I don't know you'd better ask Phil Keaggy!!" I saw it.
sorry, it was me that clicked on the wrong thumb there... what I meant to do was reply and tell you to look up their album "Synergy". You unfortunately might not be able to get it legally. I have a copy on cd from tape that was recorded from LP. Excellent stuff
I saw a show last week where Clapton did say that Phil Keaggy was one of the best.I can't remember the exact words or quotes but he did say it in so many words. Not sure about Hendrix.I saw Keaggy in 1982 and he was awesome.A truly humble servant of the Lord.
I forget the name of the talkshow host (in the late 1960s - Michael Davis?). Anyway, he asked Hendrix, "What's it like to be the best guitarist in the world?" And Hendrix said, "I don't know; you would have to ask Phil Keaggy." Supposedly, Eddie Van Halen gave him very high praise sometime on record in the late 1970s too...
Ted Nugent was quoted as saying "I don't know what happened to that Phil Keaggy. He could have saved the world with his guitar" in Guitar Player Magazine.
Ian is the one with the acoustic guitar directly to Phil's right. The camera is on Ian (and his name appears in the credits) when Phil starts singing.
Jimmi Hendrix listed Phil Keaggy as one of his main influences. Also theres an interview with Clapton where a reporter asked him what it was like to be "the greatest guitar player of all time" where he replied " I don't know you'll have to ask Phil Keaggy that question".
I gotta shoot straight with you. Despite the fact that I think Keaggy is indeed the greatest, I think that rumor about Clapton/Hendrix/etc. saying that stuff about Keaggy is suspect. I've heard that exact quote said about like 4 different guitarists. I used to espouse it myself, but I've stopped. Frankly, I think it's b.s.
The comment about Hendrix I only read in an article that was talking about Phil Keaggy, but The Clapton interview I actually saw. The interview took place somewhere between '03 and '04, but I don't know what network.
Hendrix was on the johnny Carson show when he was asked about the best guitarist ever etc etc and yes hendrix said there is a guy in ohio named phil keaggy who is the best in the world. Well documented.
Not documented at all. I traveled with PK for over 2 years. Noone has video, noone has an original interview, and JH died 2 weeks before the release of Glass Harp's first record. Sorry, friends--never happened.
Hendrix never heard Keaggy since Phil hadn't eben released a recording at the time. I was with Phil a few years ago and the myth came up about that comment being made by Hendrix and he, himself, said it just couldn't be true since he wasn't a known artist at the time. Phil's a very humble guy and a good friend and wouldn't want a lie to circulate about him. He's great and doesn't any validation from Hendrix or Clapton.
your wrong. He had already released albums with the squires and New Hudson exit. he was already creating a buzz in music circles at that time. But since phil keaggy is a personal friend of yours you would know this.
patcowan70, Phil's first national release was with Glass Harp. The Squires were an informal band who enjoyed regional success, but had no national exposure. It's funny how someone who has little clue about who or what they're talking about will tell another person who's spent time, both professionally and personally with the artist that they're wrong concerning things like this. You're part of the reason for the myths (lies) being perpetuated.
Phil doesn't want claims that aren't true circulating about him. He's one of the most gracious and humble people I've met and the truth is important to him.
New Hudson Exit was such a short stint in his career that it is seldom mentioned since they did nothing on the national level either. Hendrix never mentioned him in an interview. It's just not true. Sorry. You should be careful with the tone of your posts. Maybe it's not the case with you, but I'm a Christian and a pastor.
First of all I really don't care how you judge my tone. second of all you are right New hudson exit was a short stint. untill '68 when Glass harp was formed and started recording in Jimmi Hendrix' electric lady studio's.
Sure Glass Harp got together n '68, but they didn't start recording at Electric Ladyland until after Hendrix had passed away late in the fall of '70. The studio was only open a month or so before Jimi died. You're not gonna stump the guys that have actually been there and know some of the people involved....no matter how hard you try.
I lived in Manhattan for 10 years and played professionally there for more than 15. I've been in Electric Ladyland many times and will probably be there again a few times this summer. It's a very cool place to be able to visit and see all the history it has. I've played guitar on afew projects recorded in the studio. The Electric Ladyland record was done at the Record Plant over a year and a half before the Electric Ladyland Studio opened.
yeh, and you've seen SRV 20 times, noticed how sloppy hendrix played when you were age 7, sat down and talked to Melvin taylor, and as a pastor told a guy that he wanted to have sexual relations with Jeff healey while masturbating to SRV. I should believe you, and accept your athority as pastor? Or should I believe wikepedia. That's an easy one.
It's funny how you're twisting things and spouting them out of context from other threads. That guy at the Jeff Healey thread made a lude, sexual and inappropriate comment to that effect and I addressed its being wrong. He implied that he;d like to violate another man and I confronted him on it. It deserved the attention it got sonce it was inappropriate.
I did nothing but play professionally and travel to hear others play for more than 15 years. I was able to see many concerts by amny artists. The same is true since I've been a Christian. I've spent time with Phil and and have become froends with alot of other guys like Chris Rice, Steven Curtis Chapman, Steve Wiggins and Randy Williams of Big Tent Revival to name a few.
You've obviously not gotten out much and you're stooping to twisting things from their original context in order to attack someone else. You really have no idea who you're talking to do you? It's almost funny. I don't appreciate you saying that i put that homosexual comment into my mouth, but the twisting of it is on you since it was never my comment. I feel bad for you.
i was just offering you facts since you had things all mixed up. I figured since i was moving in these circles as a musician it was the least I could do. Instead of just saying thanks, you mount a personal attack on my character....you are wrong my friend.
You typed the words look on "little sister", now you don't want to own it. I am really glad you are not my pastor and you better hope your congregation doesn't look at your posts. It seems to me you are always expecting the best seat in the house. How sad. Maybe you Ought to call Glenn, Phil, Steven and Chris and take lessons on being humble and honest. Again my "mixed up facts" come from Wikepedia.
Wikepedia is an unofficial encyclopedia of info submitted by individuals. You can actually modify the information on a topic if you'd like to. It is monitored by a staff of moderators, but they have to accept many of the submissions as being true of they're not refuted. Hendrix never said anything about Phil Keaggy I believe was the point at hand that has been perpetuated by folks who don't know any better.
If you were to read that thread under "Little Sister" you would see that that guy made a comment about performing a homosexual act on Jeff Healy and it disgusted me. He then made a comment about me masturbating and it made me angry. I simply responded to his lude comments in anger and probably should have ignored him. I typed no profanity or lude language as I starred out letters of a word he had used and redirected his comments to me. Sorry for the poor judgement.
patcowan70, You'd probably be interested to know that Glen and Wendy Kaiser witnessed to me back in 1979 when my sound system was used for the Creation festival and Muddy Run that year. I didn't receive what they offered, but was so impacted by their authentic faith that I made JPUSA a stop anytime I passed thru Chicago. They are some of the most Aithentic CHristians on the planet
PHil keaggy is a very great guitarist And this song is one of best solos ever and first played by George Harrison the most underrated guitarist ever thank him for this!
thanks this takes me back to the days at the love inn in freeville ny when keaggy used to live there and play every friday night when I was a teen...what an awesome musician...mike winters...owego ny
I've never seen Phil play through a marshall, although I am sure he's taken one for a test drive, he loves gear... I set stage for him a few years at CreationFest East and his amps of choice are always a pair of fender deluxes, or AC30s.
I assume he has played thru just about any amp on the market, but I've seen him a few times eletric/live and like you said it was always a various Fender (usually black faced twin) and a Vox AC30 on the stage. Not sure what was backup and what was being played thru.
Not Phil's best performance ever, but solid nonetheless. I always enjoy hearing him perform Beatles tunes. I've never heard him do a Harrison song before, usually its been Macca stuff. Very cool.
I think you are exactly right. He is one of the best players on the planet, but he sounds like a mere mortal on this one. He usually plays with a much more fluid and expressive touch. If you can find it, checkout Phil's tune called 'Jam in My Pocket'. It's the best electric blues solo I've ever heard. Period.
this is my favorite beatles song.
and this is my favorite guitarist.
and when you put the both of them together its completely amazing.
great job phil! :D

Now I have a tone, because your lack of respect for others. You can't be full of God when your full of yourself.
patcowan70 4 years ago

You should go and check Phil's own site and drop him an inquiry concerning it...you'll get the answer that i'm giving you.

Yes, Thank-you, from an old fan. Nice to be able to keep up a bit with some of the stuff he's doing which I'd never get to see elsewhere period.

I've never seen Phil play through a marshall, although I am sure he's taken one for a test drive, he loves gear... I set stage for him a few years at CreationFest East and his amps of choice are always a pair of fender deluxes, or AC30s.
Dave
wharftime 4 years ago
I assume he has played thru just about any amp on the market, but I've seen him a few times eletric/live and like you said it was always a various Fender (usually black faced twin) and a Vox AC30 on the stage. Not sure what was backup and what was being played thru.

Thank you! Thank you! I was at this concert, right up front! It's great to relive this moment! Thank you thank you thank you!

Not Phil's best performance ever, but solid nonetheless. I always enjoy hearing him perform Beatles tunes. I've never heard him do a Harrison song before, usually its been Macca stuff. Very cool.
slowmovingdreams 5 years ago
I think you are exactly right. He is one of the best players on the planet, but he sounds like a mere mortal on this one. He usually plays with a much more fluid and expressive touch. If you can find it, checkout Phil's tune called 'Jam in My Pocket'. It's the best electric blues solo I've ever heard. Period.

Phil played through a Fender Pro Reverb that belongs to Dave Beegle. Dave brought all the amps except for Daniel's.
PKfanSteph 5 years ago
Anybody know if that is the Fender or Marshal amp he is playing thru?
teschoen 5 years ago
it's a Marshall
wisebard777 5 years ago
There is a Fender Twin and a Vox AC30 next to the Marshall. I can't tell what his Les is plugged into.
Phil seems to favor the Fender amps (in other shows I've seen him play)
