  • Still couldn't help texting that number.

  • I REALLY WISH I'D BEEN AROUND FOR THAT and able to drive at the time. I got my licence late...

  • Contrary to what Al Gore claims, vlogbrothers have just proved that he did NOT invent the internet :)

  • IT took me five times to get hank on 20Q and the first person was John Green

  • They came in 9th place. Only MIT found all 10. The Nerdfighters found 7.

  • Darn I wish I had been able to do this. It sounds sp exciting

  • did anybody else really want to press the balloon and just end up pausing the video?

  • Wasn't the internet created by CERN?

  • i wish i could have helped :(

  • Hank, I got my first cell phone a week ago and this was from 2009

  • We need to do more awesome nerdfighter stuff. We haven't done anything in a while.

  • Is it bad that I actually squealed with happiness when it stated Darpanerd was Gmal?

  • Did we actually get the money????

    Did we????????

40,000 dollars can decrease quite a large amount of worldsuck...

  • @thatweirdnerdygirl We lost to fellow nerds. John covers this in a video posted close after this.

  • @animeotaku thanks, I've seen that video since posting the comment.

    Stupid decepticonian nerds....

  • CERN created the Internet. No?

  • haha Hank I love the fact that you think you have to promise not to email people. Do you know how many people would be so happy to get an email from you??

  • i know this is over a year late but I DON"T OWN A CELL PHONE.

  • I don't have a cell phone :(

  • Ten red balloons floating in the summer sky. Panic bells, it's red alert

There's something here from somewhere else.

  • so are they doing this again?

  • is this strictly US? because im Canadian

  • That's how things should be done, people working together for the good of mankind!

  • CERN invented the internet

  • @greenmoon123

yeah, that's what i thought too

  • @greenmoon123 no, the internet was originally called ARPAnet and was only for the US military, it was created by DARPA

  • @greenmoon123 EXACTLY. Why does CERN get no love?

  • I wish I could've helped but I don't live in the US, incant drive a car, and I sadly wasn't subscribed to you at the release of this video

  • who won?

  • MIT

  • yes they will reverse engineer it and will pin point YOU. lets have a contest who can hack into darpa and release all the top secret files.. the prize...priceless. the technology is to enslave us. don't sell out for 40 grand.

  • what do you mean "dont sell out"

  • Will there be some PhDs awarded for the collection of the social networking discourse post-balloon contest?

If there's a natural disaster or time-sensitive emergency will people just use "red balloon hunt" as an emergency code for gathering resources again?

Without know the total number of participants and the amount of data generated, it's useless for us to speculate on this end.

How many fake balloons were in the mix?

  • Oh my god those cheating Jerks are on the Colbert Report right now! THAT SHOULD BE YOU! ARGHHH

  • Pause at 1:45 XD

  • DARPA? But, I thought Al Gore started teh internetz!

    No? Oh. OK then.

Sorry I'm just now watching this vid, would have definitely put myself on the list for Search Team.

    Next year?

  • yesterday i hear someone say al gore started the internet.....where did i hear that... i cant remember

  • That is a really weird project but I guess it does something very good.

  • Don't worry i spoke alot and made little sense the first time i took drugs.

  • Once I found 99 red balloons, floating in the summer sky

  • AUGH!! I'm so sad that I missed this!! Darn you college and all of your necessary study hours!

  • 95,999 views as i write this. i think im 96k

  • obtw, DARPA did NOT create the internet they just made darpanet, CERN however did create the internet :)

  • a bunch of guys from MIT won the challenge...

  • i am SOO CONFUSED LOL XD who's john?

  • uhh okay i'll go look for balloons now. o.O

  • I'm sad but still happy.. :/

  • fail. So sad. I wanted a win here. And I tried!

  • 69 DFTBA what an awesome number

  • MIT Pwned so much.

  • False: Marlon does not have a cellphone and hasn't had one for over a year and a half.

this was not his choice, but he's grown to like it in some ways.

  • YAAY internet! :D

  • It sucks that i found out about this after it already happened since i live about 10 minutes from one of the balloons :/

  • ..Tamtam dosen't have a cellphone... *hides under a rock*

  • hahaha I like how we both did that in third person.

  • ^__^

    I like your usernname.

  • wait. Is it over now? or can we still look for them?

  • okay. i had a dream about this, only instead the red balloons were cow shaped. so there were a crapload cow shaped red balloons flying around.

  • MIT Pwned....

  • who's WE/US?

  • So next time you do a livesteam event could you please not dissable the chat there so I don't have to spam my friend's FaceBook pages in order to chat.

  • Unfortunately the nature of livestream is such that the chat MUST be disabled, because otherwise it's totally unreadable (at least when there are a thousand or more people in the room).

The solution, I think, is not facebook but twitter: You can tweet in a way that spams no one (except the few people who also follow Hank) and still allows for a reasonably good quality of discourse. -John

  • @vlogbrothers blah blah blah balloons charity shit

  • @TheKrazyKomedy i dislike you. you don't seem like a very nice person.

  • @MissWinged I agree with that statement. That person doesn't seem nice.

  • MIT ended up winning within 9 hours. I wish I would have seen their viral campaign so I could have gotten a piece of the prize

  • MIT would.

  • Too bad it didnt success, but I really loved the idea.

  • Its a shame we lost... oh well, maybe next time :D

  • is it over now?

    Did you won?

  • they lost. check john's vid titled 'losers'

  • i love you hank.

  • What charity were you thinking of giving the money to if you won? Or were the Nerdfighters going to vote?

  • i don't have a cellphone:(

  • OH LOOK! I was right

  • You're much funnier than your brother.

Though I have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

    You make me laugh. XD

  • son of a bitch I saw one on my way to the wrestling torney and I hadnt seen this video

  • Oh damn.

I signed up, and didn't know that it had ended.

    CRAP.

  • John... i have some questions about the evil baby orphanage.where do the babys go when they're grown. do they learn not to be evil. what about the impact of the future like thousands of people not being born or what if that makes the world be inslaved and since it's an orphanage can they get adopted. we would be re writing history.

  • Why is this video catagorized as Music? Shouldn't it be Nonprofits and Activism?

  • sooo close

  • MIT beat it to you!!!

  • I took a red balloon from a little boy, and he started crying.

But after coming home i realized this was yesterday, they boy's balloon was not a weather balloon, AND i'm not living in the USA.

    Damn i'm a bad person :(

  • Damn. I bet we could have won if I had access to a car.

  • Damn, I'm in Toronto...

If any of them float over Lake Ontario I'll send you a shout :P

  • What are you talking about? It was yesterday.

  • where go the truth or fail?

  • I wish you would look into the camera for more than 1% of the video. I can see ya readin your script.

  • he's not reading a script

thats just how Hank is.. he's got a twitchy head when he talks

and he looks at the camera like the entire time o.0

  • I feel sooooo stupid.

I went a looked at the revealed locations today and one was in Centennial Park in Atlanta! 30 minutes from me! I feel so dumb for not finding it, yeah MIT won, but I would feel a little better if I could have found one...

So I sat there smacking my head for about a minute straight... Agh!

  • Hank, am I sensing a bit of a 'stache? I think I see a bit of a 'stache!

  • damn MIT won

  • I was cheering for you all, Hank!

  • Damn... watched it late. Did we win? =O

  • Why is the U.S. government doing this? Aren't we in a recession? Don't we have a deficit?

  • @bumbleberb Well, "the government" isn't like a company. There are tons of installations and stuff that really makes up the "U.S. government". DARPA is a standalone research facility and it has some money to put into that.

  • Too bad you didn't win...

  • i don't have a cellphone.. D:

nor do i live in the states, though. so.. dunno if i can help you. sorreh.

  • Sooooo Did we do it?

  • I thought CERN invented the internet

  • they invented the World Wide Web.

  • That's what I thought, too... but I also learned that from Angels and Demons, so who knows?

  • I just finished uploading my vlog and was looking around the ol youtube... i found a video of hank christmas tree shopping 2 years ago. it made me laugh.

  • just think about it!

MIT and every other team i read about had weeks of preparation and planning, we only had TWO days and still did better than most of the others!

    that is pretty impressive!!!

  • No, a balloon itself is not worth $40,000. If you listen, Hank says that the first person to submit the LOCATION of all *10* balloons gets the money.

  • damn you MIT and your supersmart math-balloon locator equations

  • Giving misinformation to MIT was insanely fun, I have to say. I felt pretty devious.

They should do a balloon search around the world next time, that way we could all be involved in the actual searching part of things!

  • the global youtube community is great, but this sounds like we'd have to go outside in the sun away from the computer to do it.. :\

  • the only thing i liked on this video - The guitar on the wall :)

  • MIT won the contest =(

    phooy...

any one know how we did at finding the balloons?

  • We had found 9 balloons when MIT found the tenth and we found the tenth soon after MIT, so it was very close

  • So who found the 10th balloon? was it in SF Union Square?

  • DARPA released all the locations and yes, one of them was in San Francisco Union Square.

    =Math

  • Rats.

Why do I never check my YouTube subscriptions soon enough?

I wish I could have helped with this!

There should be more things like this.

  • SAME!

  • I thought Tim Berners-Lee created the internet.

  • i dont have a cell phone. or a car. u_u

oh-GASP-i use my LEGS! fancy that. :D

  • your jumper looks really comfortable

  • I just read that the MIT team is going to donate it to charity, so there's that.

  • I'm sorry. I wish I could have helped. I lacked one thing though... A car.... I sorry. That and I didn't see this video until just now. T_T But... I did a equally fun nerdy thing. I played D&D with friends. Do you know if they'll be doing this again?

  • when is the project for awesome?

  • They were all in publice parks along the coast, that takes like 2-5 people to find...

  • no balloons in Toronto.

  • k hank, my friend and I searched in a radius of about 1-2 miles around the lakewood, colorado ballon sighting and asked around, and there was no balloon, from what I guessed from the email, there was no such balloon, sorry I couldn't have been more help I tried to call and inform you that there was no balloon there

  • :( Man. Well, they weren't in Abilene, or near it. D: I hope MIT does something and DFTBA with the prize money. ^^; Those who did it, you guys did an epic job. <3

  • Haha one of the gallons was above my school!!

  • Yeah, I just checked that MIT won...oh well, they'll probably put the money to good nerd-related use.

    =Nerdfighter Math

  • MIT Team won... if I had heard of this earlier, I would have helped.

  • i wish i wasn't in school!! i really want to be a part of this!! best luck to all members of the team!!! GO NERDFIGHTERS!

  • Lol, Balloon boy. :P

  • I'm glad I didn't go looking because the balloons stayed far away from Kansas.

  • I wanted to sign up, but I couldn't 'cause I was busy all day today...now I'm kind of glad I didn't. I just checked the map on the darpa sight and it seems that, like the Tour de Nerdfighting and most of the awesome things in the USA, the balloons pretty much stayed as far away from Colorado as possible without falling in the ocean.

  • I mean seriously, it looks like most of these balloons could have been found by just driving along the coast for a few hours.

  • Stupid Canada not inventing the internet - GOD

  • This probably would've worked better if we were informed about it earlier.

  • Yeah they could have said earlier.

  • Or if you watched their vids sooner...

  • It's only been two days... (though that's actually pretty impressive, if you think about it.)

  • sadly im in germany... I'm in the military gimme the money!

  • aww u guys.... well it was great teamwork, and we're still more awesome than them !!

  • congratulations to MIT

  • It is good we found 9 ballons but mit cant win thay have a collig and progeshinal dtuff we just have us

  • =-(

  • ohh... i really hope we win so the money goes to charity...

  • MIT won. it sucks.

  • Shouldn't MIT be disqualified for being a professional organization? I mean, nerdfighters don't have their own college... yet...

  • omg. One was in the town where I grew up (200 miles away from me now), and the other was an hour away from my house. That's amazing!

Good job, Nerdfighters, for your awesome Search & Discovery efforts! We should play this game again! ;)

  • AHHHHHHH WE WERE SOOOOO CLOSE!!!

but its pretty amazing how we actually found 9 out of 10 balloons!!!! Nerdfighteria is expanding!!!!! Even though i am a little sad and envy MIT, congrats. It also annoyed me a bit how there were no balloons in the great plains area... oh well we'll win next time :)

  • I think my 6 year old was on one of those baloons!

  • damn i was late. where were they and where is the missing one?

  • Does anyone know were the 9 ballons were that the nerdfighters found? I am so sad, I was so sure we could do this. Congratulations MIT.

  • The questions is...How did they do it?

  • @RitchyWolf Greed, sir. Greed.

(nah, congrats to MIT forgiving a whole $250 to charity..... :( )

  • we should have won.

  • Yep, DARPA announced that MIT won.

  • I still think this is an amazing win for nerdfighteria. This was a motivate people to do something within 24 hours thing and out of the 10, nerdfighters found a whopping 8! So yeah, amazing results.

  • I thought we found 9

  • That can very well be. Last I heard from the ning was 8. Maybe I missed the last one.

  • John said 9 on his twitter. we were SO CLOSE!!

  • noooo MIT Red Balloon Team won :(

  • MIT won....

  • i can't believe it!!! if we would've won, that would have been completely fantastic and amazing

  • yet another reason why i hate massachusetts

  • wait so its too late?? darn

  • This is why I love John, Hank, and nerdfighteria.

  • Most groups seem to have trouble finding balloon #10, apparently. Go find it everyone!

  • Nobody has won yet. But tneredballoons had about 8 last time i checked, Which was about ten minutes ago.

  • wow already 229 confirmed locations on these baloons

  • 3. Charlottesville, VA

  • Sad

  • oh wow. did we win?

  • ACTUALLY in one of the baloons is a hidden plane and after the baloon reaches a hight of 3000 feet it destroys the baloon and carries the leftovers to a secret base.

so there is no chance of getting all 10

  • as of 2pm, one of the other teams (10redballoons) have found 8 as well.

  • Did we get? Did we?!
