Environmentalists are the reason I am paying $4 for a gallon of gas. When the economy collapses and hyperinflation kicks in, I hope these quacks will be happy.
That said, direct monetary subsides to fossil technologies also exist.

And considering it's a near impossibility to yank all those subsidies away, the only other approach to achieve an unbiased market result is to give an equivalent level of subsidy.
Such that the technologies compete on a level playing field.

The best way to protect the environment is to consume less and efficiently. Waste almost nothing and recycle as much as possible.

Well exactly
The trick being that currently the market doesn't have a price for pollution, and other emissions.
If it did, then the market would come to a better solution.
The problem is that the market isn't perfect, and doesn't incorporate all damages and services.
So what you end up having is current poluting technologies "free-riding" on unpaid externalities.
In effect a subsidy.
If we could take those subsidies away, that would be the best approach for an unbiased market result.
