They are a part of what I believe, I started listening back in 1992, I thought I was being a good American, paying my taxes, and trying to help people like the poor inner city types, just like my dad. Chris...the question you need to ask yourself is why have those manufacturing jobs disappeared? During the 30's we were a country of 1/3 consumption and 2/3 production. That 2/3 production is what got us out of the Great Depression. Today, we are 1/3 production and 2/3 consumption. Until we start making more of the things that people want or need, all this government spending is for nothing. And by need I mean something other than solar panels or wind mills.

Those jobs disappeared because the government pulled the rug out from under the workers in this country with their changes in trade policy. Free trade policies were crafted so that no (minimal) standards applied to labor or environmental policies of the country of production. This made it unfairly cheap to produce goods in other countries, thus jobs left this country.

The gov created the problem by changing laws in favor of multinational corporations. The government can fix the problem by changing the laws to be in favor of labor and the environment. Gov in the right hands can be a major solution. Though I don't expect that sort of change from Obama.

First we have to accept that the founding fathers lived in a world that is completely different than the one we live in today.

Back then, government was the main power, but nowdays we have other powerstructures that I would argue are actually more powerful than government: corporations.

Gov needs to be held more accountable to the people than it is currently, but at least the gov is accountable to the people where as major corporations are not.

Government funding particularly of the sciences in higher education will train the human captial needed to create new technologies. It is through these new technologies that sustainable jobs will be created. The government can also subsidize sectors like clean renewable energy to help spur r&d in those areas. Ultimately it is a race; we need to develop the technologies before other countries if we are going to profit off of them.

If those are viable economic avenues, what makes you think they wouldn't be explored without government aid? We are already importing our scientists from other countries despite the massive subsidies on higher education. Why is that? Could it be that government is incompetent, that it wastes money, and that in doing so it discourages Americans from being as productive as they could be?

Many avenues of research do not promise profits in the near enough future for any company to invest. If the government funds research in these areas so that they can get off the ground, then the private sector may beable to see the future profits and thus invest.

What is there inherent in government that is wasteful? There are issues with gov spending, but with careful oversight, those issues can be eliminated.

Most advancements in science are interpolations of previous advancements. These interpolations are mostly finding applications for the new discoveries and unlocking even further advancements. Because of this, most advancements pay off relatively quickly. Yes, there is a lot of research that does not pay off so quickly. These are either of the kind that are life long statistical analysis or testing "new phenomena". Very few of these projects are ever successfully useful. Ergo the lack of funds.

Seeing that the cost of both education and health care are rising sharply while the average wage adjusted for inflation in this country is dropping, it shouldn't be a surprise that people are having a hard time paying for this stuff.

A couple of decades ago, people could skip school and make a decent living in factories, but now those jobs have disappeared. What choice is left?

How is the government going to provide these services? By what right does it attempt to do so? Why would it be more efficient for government, which produces nothing, to take command of the economy? Do you believe that goods and services are materialized because of whim? Do you not see how competition and the desire to make money is what drives people to create goods and services that are cheap and high quality?

Healthcare would be more efficient under gov control because you wouldn't have a corporate bureaucracy digging into people's history in order to find pre-existing conditions. Also people would be able to get treatment for small problems instead of waiting for them to develop into big problems.

Education (particularly in the sciences) does not benefit the individual as much as it benefits society: externality. The gov should boost funding to overcome that externality.

No you would have government bureaucracy. I actually grew up with American government run health care. Not only does it run exactly the same as the HMOs, but after too many cost overruns, outsourced the plan to a private HMO. (I'm a military brat if you are wondering). And yes they DENY care and LIMIT care. Yes, you can have long wait times which totally goes against your point of catching problems when they are small. I had to wait a year between dentists, when I moved, with braces on.
