  • The E39 is better-looking (and better-looking than the F10 M5 for that matter), but the E60 trumps the E39 in every other way.

  • like everyone says there is just no way that the E60 is on 400 bhp mode for the first few videos , the last video yes , either that or the E39 is only running on 6 cylinders not on the full V8

  • I do believe only the last roll was done with the e60 in p400 mode... since you know... thats the only one where it says that. Reading helps.

  • @an50331 no, the M5/M6 is electronically throttle controlled. With no power mode on, the engine is limited electronically to 100% WOT. There are also other settings via iDrive where you can custom arrange your M mode settings. Things like, stability, damping and shocks, increase/decrease throttle response, which is part of Power Mode....  Reference: M6 Cabrio in stable.

  • I have the 03 e39 m5. As chronolegionx said "as it is it's great". But when I upgraded the suspension to Dinan with front and rear high perf. sway bars and struts, it makes a world of difference. It makes so much difference in taking corners (you can go in so much faster and accelerate much quicker).

  • @utubeusr8 This is correct. The suspension in the E39 M5 isn't where it should be for a car with that much power. The E60 has amazing suspension where you can corner as hard as you want and not feel the sway. Not to mention that the seats hug you when you going into a turn that hard too!!

  • The problem with these type of tests are the different persons, because they have different skills. It should be normal that the E60 is faster. But most times the E60s will not run in Sport modus - so I have a chance to catch them with my E39 M5.

  • Couple years ago I got a chance to drive an E39 M5 and pretty much fell in love with it. You wouldn't think it was a midsize sedan from the way it feels; you can throw it around like a sports car. Plus, I feel the power is just right; E60 may have a V10 but imo its actually too much power. lol when you remove the limiter the stock E39 will run on the sunny side of 180...thats more than fast enough for me. The E39 is just right; I wouldn't change a thing. Esp the V8 exhaust note...epic :)

    25% more power, with launch control and SMG is quite the combination - after all it would be shocking if the e39 showed up the e60.

    e60 is basically the evolved version: brakes harder, handles better and definitely out-powers the e39. Unless you have DRIVEN both, its quite hard to understand the impact of this evolution.

    But the looks of the e60?? Hmmmmmm...

  • I really could care less if the E60 has more brute force, the E39 is stll my favorite of the series. I don't care much for the E60's looks, either.

  • This is not rocket science. The E60 has a 507hp V10 with engine management technology trickled down from F1, the E39 has a 400hp V8 based on much older technology that is simply based on temperature and A/F based timings. Stock to stock there is simply nothing to evenh speak of. The E60 is head and shoulders above the E39 in every possible way. Though, for my money, I'd get the E39 and modify it.

  • If you have ever heard the E39's V8 exhaust note in person, it's almost worth buying one for the sound alone. I realize on paper the E39 is better, but coming from a person who has driven them both, the connection you feel with the E39 just isn't there with the E60.

I mean suspension/intake/engine management tuning/tires/camber adjustment too. i assure you im not a redneck whos all about straightline and i have appreciation for the cars BMW makes. but i believe every car has room for improvement. and yes i've driven both theyre amazing for what they are.(Best family cars ever.If i ever get rich ill get one and keep it with bolt ons and have the evo as a race/weekend driver) so yeah I only cursed because it was ignorant

  • I agree there is always room for improvement, but every once in awhile you come across a car that you just love the way it is; I found that car when I drove the E39. The difference is, I don't think the E39 NEEDS the ESM and other tech that goes into the E60, regardless of the percieved "benefit". Over-automate a car and you lose the soul. Could I venture to guess (since you see my comment as ignorant) that you're not a huge fan of vintage cars?

  • heh, nice that we found some common ground then. A '63 Stingray with the '08 Z06 engine and modern chassis would be absolutely badass. I agree there is a difference between modding and ricing, and even though I wouldn't normally mess with an E39 M5, I WOULD rip out that 155mph limiter in a heartbeat :D

  • Didn't they improve the VANOS as well as other things when they improved the tech that went into the E60? It was much better when the E60 was running at 400, but still was sad that the E39 cept up that close to it even after aging, which shows how bad the E60's weight problem is. E39 > E60

  • hahaha... nice try... The e39 wasnt even close... My dad owns an e60 m5 and it weighs at most 4100lbs... not bad for a 4 door sedan of that size...The e39 weighs just over 4000lbs... recheck your facts I dont call 100lbs a huge disadvantage considering it has 100+ more hp

  • The e39 is 3957 and the e60 4100. Not that big of a deal. The e60 is amazing but the e39 did more than it was supposed in a classy saloon shell. Im glad I didnt upgrade.

  • No the new M5 is just that fast. It has better power delivery, better gearing, and most importantly it has the SMG transmission which helps minimize mistakes. Let's face it. Not everyone can shift like a pro so SMG does have some benefit.

  • Absolutely true. I start driving at 7-8 my father's car(4sp)in small towns, then trucks/cars in CA traffic, I had 9 cars no automatic yet & still it's easy to make bad start...

  • Also the new M5 may have been in P400 mode, but... it still has a V10 thus providing more torque in P400 mode than the standard E39 M5 (V8)
