That shot of him at the end, lingering in the Major Crimes office one last time, is echoed near the end of Season 4, when Dukie takes one last look around Prez's classroom before leaving forever.
Notice his fortune cookie? "A new friend makes himself known" In the streets his fellow officers are friends and the criminals are foes. A friend, his fellow officer, is noticed because he fired his weapon multiple times making himself noticed or "known". I want some chinese food now yo.
@mattd687 Yeah, you could see it that way, too. Stringer sure ended up very friendly with the police soon enough. I was just thinking from Prez's standpoint that he'll soon meet Dukie who became a friend to him, but I guess he never read the other side that that 'friend' will eventually drift away.
I didn't realize before I watched this clip that Daniels was subtly steering Prez with his questions, giving him hints about how to get his story straight. Daniels knows that it was an accident and was looking after his man. Prez proves that he's worth looking after by acknowledging that he's fucked up too badly this time and that he's done.
He has grown so much as a person from the time he pistol whips that black kid and blinds him in one of his eyes to him being a successful teacher. From bad to good.
Same for Carver except he became better police by the end of the series compared to the first 3 seasons.
Herc remained a dumbass, tho an unlikeable one after he ruined Randy, Bubbles, and Little Kevin's lives.
excellent forseshadowing with the fortune cookie by the writers. goddamn i miss this show......matter of fact im bout to start watching it over right now starting from season 1 LOL
Normally I don't single out actors from The Wire for their talent, but both Lance Reddick and Jim True-Frost deserved Emmy nominations for this scene. One of the best moments of the series, and this is The Wire. That's saying something.
But naw it was a honest mistake, and when I 1st saw this I just knew when I heard them shots it was Prez shot. But when they showed Prez standing over the body and the patrol car roll up I new Prez had did something that would have change his life. Plus when I press the info button on my cable box it said Prez has a life changing moment. LOL
who eats the cookie first lol yeah prez is probably the only 'good guy' whose truly made any progress. he became a whiz at piecing the parts together and he and lester were like the engine that kept major crimes running. it's for the best he became a teacher though you can tell he grew up pretty fast in season 4
Prez wasn't competent? Sheeeit, I remember that intro in one of the episodes in sesaon 2 when that Johnny Cash joint is playing in the background, and he's piecing together all the players in the Barksdale organization on the board.
Or, although not all that elaborate, how he was able to decipher the codes they were using.
Prez was "good police". As long as he didn't have his ass on the street.
As he said at the end in the aforementioned scene: "Fuckin A."
You correct Prez was good police. He didn't get credit cause everyone only wanted to remember his bad moments. Remember he's the one who figure out the Barksdale's phone code. This was by far a honest mistake. I really thought he was gonna get shot once McNulty left the car and they split.
Prez was a good cop. Maybe not built for the street stuff, but good otherwise. If not for him, they'd all still be scratching their heads over the pager codes the Barksdales used in Season One.
This absolutely broke my heart the first time I saw it. Prez is a fantastic detective if you stick him in an office and give him pieces of a puzzle to fit together. He's brilliant. But put him in a high pressure situation with a gun and he's a fuck up. It felt like all those episodes of growth were for nothing and all because he went for takeout. At least in Season 4 he finds his calling. Though that brought a whole new kind of heartbreak.
My heart stopped when I first saw this scene and how McNulty reveals the badge of the corpse.
And a great moment for the actor of Prez, his reaction is gut-wrenching.

@DocSkribblez I always assumed that it was a hint for McNulty that Stringer Bell would become an informant.

Actually he was a good detective, far better than carver and Herc at least.
He cracked up the barksdale code and was very good at investigating papers and watching the wire.
The problem with prez is that he is too impulsive and had a bad temper.
