Converge are hardcore gods becoz of Jacob Bannon and Kurt Ballou. Stop comparing them to any other band out there. Converge endured and survived even the lowest of times when people were hooked on Linkin Park and Evanescence. Converge deserves the attention its getting now. Listen to all their demos and albums before comparing them to any shitty commercial band out there.

It's weird seeing people arguing about over who is greater band, like Converge or Mastodon? I mean, their music styles are completely different. Mastodon is 4-instrument band, unlike Converge. They may seem similar only to some country music fan. Also, it's pretty retarded for someone to say that these two bands have bad musicians. I'd say Ballou is technically as good guitarist as Hinds, and I can tell because I've been playing guitar for 12 years. Same for the drummers and bassists.

The drummer is nearly note for note with what he plays on the albums, and the drum tracks are just as complicated as Brann Dailor's. Also, Kurt's guitar is so different than that of the Mastodon guitarists that its impossible to compare. also, Jake can actual do his vocals properly live, unlike Brett Hinds
@doublethink921 I've seen em live too...the audience booed. Brent Hinds had a throat infection during their blood mountain tour, and still hasn't entirely recovered. Kurt's guitar is just bad, no way around it. When I saw Converge live Jake couldn't quite handle the vocals. Converge isn't talented, just like herpes is for life.

So thereforeI ask you this, how is Kurt's playing bad? his melodic lines aren't jumbled or inaccurately played. Also, Brent's vocals have always been shot to some degree, they were just at their nadir during the Blood Mountain tour

Second, he's in a hardcore punk/ mathcore band, the music doesn't give room fore anything other than power chords, owever there are instances of difference chords being used, as in the song "dark horse". Third, how can his playing be incoherent, it's not free jazz or anything like that, and there are melodies to be found in every converge song even this one, at 0:56, that's what's known as a melody

In truth, all kinds of chords are available to fit any key. His play is dissonant to the point of incoherency. Music is all about change in dynamics. Kurt's playing fits one e.g. fast, loud, and dissonant. Well written music is constantly from fast to loud, slow to fast, and consonant to dissonant.
@grahamzandah His playing isn't sloppy, or more accurately its no sloppier than any other guitarist in a live setting, on record his playing is as precise as anyone could want. Kurt has a very good dynamic range, as many song slow down, speed up, get louder, and get quieter as they progress, its just on several songs the intensity is meant to remai constant. also, it would be damn near impossible to use other chords at this speed, just ask mastodon who use power chords almost exclusively

@grahamzandah for changes in dynamics, try the songs "in her shadow", "Jane Doe", "grim heart/black rose", "you fail me" to name a few. I've listened to Crack The Skye and I know how to play every song on the album except the czar and the vast majority of chord are power chords. and jazz guitarists can change chord shapes quite frequently but in order to play any of those complex chords and not have them to turn to complete mud, you would have to play undistorted and that would be out of place

@doublethink921 Yes, there is a lot of power chords in Mastodon's songs. But they have one thing that Converge does not...MELODY. Animals as Leaders has plenty of high gain altered chords, you just have to train your ear to hear them :3 There is absolutely nothing wrong with dissonance. It only become irksome when that's all the artist utilizes, much like Converge.
@grahamzandah converge does have melody, they just don't have long-winded solos and a lot of there songs are mainly chords, but a large perportion of their songs have melodies, and a good deal of them are not that dissonent, so you can's say converge is straight noise. as for Animals as Leaders, you may be right, I haven't heard all that many songs by them.
@doublethink921 I don't hear melody with Converge, I hear mainly riffs. Melody is generally something you can hum, haha and you can't hum Converge. I have yet to hear any Converge song using consonance. Consonance means close, or not clashing. If Converge used consonance in their song writing they would have harmonies involving major thirds, nines, etc.
@grahamzandah if a melody is just something that is hummable, then riffs are melodies. if you mean melodies as in repeating single note phrases, that's to be found in Converge's music. as for consonance, there are pasages of consonance in their music, as in the aforementioned "in her shadow". and also, work on your theory more, ninths aren't consonent as their relationship to octaves always makes them sound off

There is a little thing I like to call majority rule. The majority of Converge songs use dissonance. This means that they show little to no differentiation with their song writing. This is very clear in the progression on the music. It hasn't changed one bit from their first album.

And its not even close harmony if its more than an octave apart, it sounds dissonent, just not as dissonent as a diminished fifth or minor ninth. also there is a little thing called minority rights, you have to respect the minority's qualities and values and simply cannot disregard them as if they don't exist. And there has been a significant change in their music, it just hasn't dumbed itself down like Mastodon did

One of the best parts of Mastodon was Brann's drumming but on the new album it turned into basic timekeeping except for a few flourishes in Divinations and the Last Baron. Not only that, but the guitars became more prototypical prog metal guitar that I could find on any record

Kurt's guitar is just bad, no way around it. When I saw Converge live Jake couldn't quite handle the vocals. Converge isn't talented, just like herpes is for life.

So thereforeI ask you this, how is Kurt's playing bad? his melodic lines aren't jumbled or inaccurately played. He's as skilled as any tech-metal guitarist in terms of rhythm. so why do you consider him "bad"? Also, Brent's vocals have always been shot to some degree, they were just at their nadir during the Blood Mountain tour

Second, he's in a hardcore punk/ mathcore band, the music doesn't give room fore anything other than power chords, owever there are instances of difference chords being used, as in the song "dark horse". Third, how can his playing be incoherent, it's not free jazz or anything like that, and there are melodies to be found in every converge song even this one, at 0:56, that's what's known as a melody

In truth, all kinds of chords are available to fit any key. His play is dissonant to the point of incoherency. Music is all about change in dynamics. Kurt's playing fits one e.g. fast, loud, and dissonant. Well written music is constantly from fast to loud, slow to fast, and consonant to dissonant.

@grahamzandah His playing isn't sloppy, or more accurately its no sloppier than any other guitarist in a live setting, on record his playing is as precise as anyone could want. Kurt has a very good dynamic range, as many song slow down, speed up, get louder, and get quieter as they progress, its just on several songs the intensity is meant to remai constant. also, it would be damn near impossible to use other chords at this speed, just ask mastodon who use power chords almost exclusively

@grahamzandah for changes in dynamics, try the songs "in her shadow", "Jane Doe", "grim heart/black rose", "you fail me" to name a few. I've listened to Crack The Skye and I know how to play every song on the album except the czar and the vast majority of chord are power chords. and jazz guitarists can change chord shapes quite frequently but in order to play any of those complex chords and not have them to turn to complete mud, you would have to play undistorted and that would be out of place

@doublethink921 Yes, there is a lot of power chords in Mastodon's songs. But they have one thing that Converge does not...MELODY. Animals as Leaders has plenty of high gain altered chords, you just have to train your ear to hear them :3 There is absolutely nothing wrong with dissonance. It only become irksome when that's all the artist utilizes, much like Converge.

@grahamzandah converge does have melody, they just don't have long-winded solos and a lot of there songs are mainly chords, but a large perportion of their songs have melodies, and a good deal of them are not that dissonent, so you can's say converge is straight noise. as for Animals as Leaders, you may be right, I haven't heard all that many songs by them.

I have yet to hear any Converge song using consonance. Consonance means close, or not clashing. If Converge used consonance in their song writing they would have harmonies involving major thirds, nines, etc.

@grahamzandah if a melody is just something that is hummable, then riffs are melodies. if you mean melodies as in repeating single note phrases, that's to be found in Converge's music. as for consonance, there are pasages of consonance in their music, as in the aforementioned "in her shadow". and also, work on your theory more, ninths aren't consonent as their relationship to octaves always makes them sound off

There is a little thing I like to call majority rule. The majority of Converge songs use dissonance. This means that they show little to no differentiation with their song writing. This is very clear in the progression on the music. It hasn't changed one bit from their first album.

And its not even close harmony if its more than an octave apart, it sounds dissonent, just not as dissonent as a diminished fifth or minor ninth. also there is a little thing called minority rights, you have to respect the minority's qualities and values and simply cannot disregard them as if they don't exist. And there has been a significant change in their music, it just hasn't dumbed itself down like Mastodon did

One of the best parts of Mastodon was Brann's drumming but on the new album it turned into basic timekeeping except for a few flourishes in Divinations and the Last Baron. Not only that, but the guitars became more prototypical prog metal guitar that I could find on any record

The Mastodon fans HATED Converge and vice versa. I only knew one Converge song (Axe To Fall), but I enjoyed their set. I was there more for Mastodon & Dethklok, which was also a pretty tremendous contrast in styles.

I've listened to a lot of Dave Weckl albums, got all of Gavin Harrison's instructional DVDs, and really learned a lot of drum-related concepts... I can't say if this guy from Converge knows what a metric modulation is, or how to play an inverted paradiddle-diddle, but I simply cannot jump to conclusion that he is "fucking ridiculous". True, I've seen better, but I've also seen a lot worse.

IF, and maybe if, their guitarist learns to play, their drummer learns to play an actual beat, and their singer musters up the creativity to write some lyrics, then they could possibly be good.
