Most of G1 was bogged down by the 80s stupidity and censorship (Beast Wars, Animated and Prime are what G1 could have become had it existed in a different era with less censorship), but this movie was the BEST of G1.

True, but it still managed to be a hit. Kind of says something that back then an idea could reach the top on its own merits, while today a single bad voice actor or substandard bit of art can kill a series..

Some of the art in this movie, and some of the voice acting (starscream and Megatron come to mind... If I knew them in real life I would likely strangle them in the hope their voice wouldn't be so annoying afterwards...)

All in all though, good for it's time, but still very cheesy and very stupid when you actually look at it :P

Cheesy doesn't necessarily mean stupid. Besides, I've seen some well written, well produced series get killed off far before their time for reasons that make little sense. For example, Swat Katz. The network said that was because they felt that violence shouldn't be in cartoons, and that they were losing viewers. Their way of 'regaining' those viewers? Becoming CN Real and having a lot of reality show. They lost money with that move, while the "cartoons with violence" were getting them profits..
