hi... is there any way of getting the bassline to come in smoother rather than a heavy thud at the beginning of the note... just so its sits nice in a trance / techno song i am working on ... thanks so much for your tutorials you deserve a medal for the help you have given me.. respect and happy new year 2 u
hey dave, how does changing the amount of the kick sent to bus 1 affect the sidechain signal?
also, as a tip, you may want to talk next time about the added settings in the compressor (when you click on the sideways arrow near the bottom). the compressor's Q settings make a huge difference on basslines. thanks for this though. very helpful!
hey man,,,,,,,,,appreciate ur work,,,,, I jus saw all ur videos,,,,,as i was new to logic,,,it was quite hard to find new ways to do things,,,,,,,thx a million,,,god bless :))
Something, else I learned, is to assign the bus as a "pre-fader" bus, so that you can drop the volume out of the kick, and the side-chain still affects the bass.
Great video. I've been using Logic since 2.6 and it's great to find videos like yours. I'm always looking to learn different ways of doing things or accidently stumbling upon new tricks.
I'm going to start watching all of your videos now and again.
The only thing I thought was whack is how you said, "I don't care" what you call me.
If you don't care then why did you even bring it up?
I'm reading into to it too much I suppose, but it seemed so off color from the rest of your video personality
Dude YOUNGER BROTHER is Simon Posford.. look him up his Productions of PSY and CHILL music are on another level
Listen to SPHONGLED it is amazing music..
if he doesnt know about the freeze function that is strange... but his music speaks for itself. Thanx for these great tutorials i really get alot from them! CHEERS!
at 3:51 when you have to put no imput on the auxiliary i press on it and nothing happens that little window dosnt come out, were it says bus1 and no imput idk why it wont show,i click and nothing happens can you help please?(:
and is it a big factro in the sidechaning if i skip this step?
hi Dave, just a quicky... GM in Logic? Does it exist?
My school is finally converting from cubase to Logic ( thank God) but have to finish music tech course on cubase. All the exam entries must be submitted using GM. this is fine on cubase but cant seem to find GM instruments on Logic... can you help?
Thanks for re-uploading! Great video. Why can't people understand that all of these tips are useful for many other things than the example given. This will come in handy for many things in the future.
Also, you should look into using Vimeo to upload your videos, much much better quality, with the option for Quicktime download for the user. And a much much better upload system. Plus you don't get a bunch of horrible useless comments, hooray!
What do you mean by directly select? use the output of the channel strip? You can do this as well, I just use the bus so that you can potentially use more than one channel strip to feed the sidechain..
Obviously different material requires different settings just to add to your video you usually find with that style of music a ratio of 10:1 is good starter.
Im not sure im not technical at any of this audio production stuff ive just found from experimenting with dance music using logics compressor for sidechaining 10:1 seems to be more effective than lower settings , try it and see for yourself.
Think of it this way: 10:1 means any of the energy passing the threshold is going to be a tenth of what it would originally be. That's pretty heavy compression, and makes a nice effect for these kind of 'special effect' compressors.
some times freezing is not what you need to do, since you have no control over the material you froze. No moving the audio aroiund, chopping up, looping etc. I know you know all of this, just wanted to point it out for others who might not know. :)
I´m hoping there will be a better freeze soon, enabling you to make edits such as I listed above.
Oh no! You really let the cat out of the bag on this one! Remember when someone asked you how to use an auto-tuner and you refused to make a video regarding it because you despised it's overuse in pop music? i.e. Kanye West, Britney and countless so called musicians. Well I have a feeling you just opened up the flood gates of a whole other tidal wave of mind numbing blather. You know this to be true!
I just KNOW someone' gonna get all over me for this, but here is a bad, generalized, SIMPLE answer. RMS is more of an average compression where PEak is only really compressing the signal when the threshold gets passed. Peak is much better for catching fast transients, while RMS (Root Means Squared) in better as an average compression over the audio energy.
One more question. I know one of the purposes of a compressor is to reduce the dynamic range of the loud db level and make it more of a constant db level and bring it down close to the lower db level. My question is, if there is a reduction of say 4 db, would you use the make up gain to increase 4 db? Also does the makeup gain apple to anything that does not reach the threshold. (Lower db levels, as a result making it closer to the louder db after applying makeup gain)
Very nice man! One question. When you turned up your threshold you had about 8 db gain reduction, why didn't you add 8db make up gain? Is that because each kick is at exactly the same decibel level?
When the kick isn't hitting the compressor' sidechain, the volume of the bass is at its original level. The bass is only getting compressed when the kick triggers the compressor. THis is why I don't use makeup gain in this instance.
Isn't the kick on the compressor constantly being compressed therefor always triggering the bass? Now, about the makeup gain, not sure I understood your response. Is the kick at a constant db level? I think I understand, I just have trouble explaining myself correctly.
The kick is at a constant db level and is not affected by the compressor.
The compressor is only affecting the bass by listening to the bus for signal to use as a trigger. If it were to affect the kick, a compressor would have to be applied to the track that the kick was on.
Also, it's not the compression of the kick that's triggering the compression on the bass, it's the actual signal of the kick that the compressor is listening for to affect the bass, very key difference.
Now I got it. Thanks. This is off the topic. Would you apply a gate and then a compressor to a track to reduce offensive noise or headphone bleed into a mic then compress the loud to make it closer to the lower db level. Or compress then gate?
You would probably want to go gate and then compressor/limiter. If you compress before the gate, you might not be able to remove the hiss or bleed on parts where the compressor is very active.
Also, you may want to try the Apple AU "Denoiser," I think it's under the 'Specialized' tab in your plug menu. I've found it to be pretty good at cleaning up stuff like that.
I like to use the Klopfgheist to trigger the ducking sound on my synths. That way I can do whatever I want with my kick. Good to see that this video is back up.
logic ninja, you are god, im new to trance music etc, but electronic music is something i really want to get into, bare back rock and roll is boring me now, its too simple haha, what do you suggest i try out?

why do you have to use the bus in this example? why cant you directly select the track with the kick drum hits for your sidechain compression?
