I love Kup's Show during the '60s and '70s engaging in the "lively art of conversation". It used to come on TV live at 10:30pm on Saturday evenings in Chicago. I really miss that show and all the great collection of guests from every walk of life all talking to each other about everything.
Kup really did have interesting guest mixes. I recall visiting in-laws in Chicagoland in 1976 when Rocky I was just released. I turned on the tube to escape boring conversation and Kups show was on. His guests on the program were Sylvester Stallone, Ann Landers and Patti Smith. Sly was unknown at that
time and pretty meek as a guest. He obviously didnt have talk show experience. Kup spoke with Sly first, then Ann Landers and finally Patti Smith. It was clear that Ann Landers was disgusted by the Patti Smiths rock-n-roll lifestyle and would chime in with snarky, critical comments. The conversation with Patti entered the sexual realm of life on the road. Ann was in full negative gear when Patti Smith looked at her directly and asked if she (Ann Landers) had ever given head.
Wow! The show had to be live because Kup jumped out of his chair stammering, the camera man didnt know where to point the camera, the look on Slys face was priceless and Ann Landers was in shock. Kup actually cut the show off until everyone could regain composure. I know it is nothing by todays standards of anything goes but for the time it was outrageous.
