  • No way, folks. Glenn Close, hands down!!!

  • Lovely voice, but Dame Judi owns this im afraid...x

  • wow she can sing ... I never knew she was a singer to .. I thought she was just a hot chick with a nice latina booty.. lol

  • @Dorisequador Not many Latinas in deepest Wales boyo!

(although yes of course I agree with you!)

  • Not realistic. What man would walk away from Catherine Zeta-Jones?

  • no thanks...

  • Zeta is overacting

  • @crackerpopskikay I don't think you can overact heart break

  • @LvndrHppE sondheim would beg to differ

  • Man, she s destroi the song, what a terrible voice. Give up to sing girl.....

  • God she butchers this song :-(

  • Maybe if she would have sang this in Zorro she might have gotten away with it.

  • She deserved her Oscar. She lit up the screen. Broadway nerds may not like it but it was a movie and they cast movie stars

  • i liked Bernadettes better

  • This is horrible. Interpretation is all wrong. Miscast to put it lightly. She was great in Zorro.

  • I am really sad for her because as well or not well as she did it wont matter because she was cast badly. Not her fault but it's the truth of the matter.

  • I think the best are Barbra's gentle rendition and Judy Dench's emotional rendition.

    and Catherine sucks. lol

  • While I think CZJ did a nice job, Bernadette is just magical

  • You don't need a good voice to be able to do this song. Look at Dame Judi Dench! My mum (who's a huge musicals fan) said that she never understood this song until she heard Judi Dench do it.

  • @laurentitmus stephen sondhiem actually said judis version was his favoruite :)

  • @laurentitmus : I agree. I didn't like or understand the song until I saw Judi Dench perform it. Then WOW. She sold me on it.

  • judi dench is the best at this song! :)

  • Hey, this wasn't bad at all. I expected it to be terrible.

  • @greg5566 Greg, mind if I post here with you? I also didn't think badly of her attempt. I rather liked it. But then she is so gorgeous, she'd be wonderful just babbling. Oh those lips!! Certainly she's no B. Peters but who is?

  • @Loejyrrab She's insanely hot, but that's why I think she is so wrong for this part. It's about a woman past her prime etc. It's just too far-fetched to believe she would ever sing this song. And I don't like how she does it either. Kind of angry/sarcastic. But the song is pure sadness regret.

BTW we played this song in marching band in high school. That is the only way to do this song justice, let me tell you.

  • @greg5566 Well put Greg, "Insanely hot" I love that, because that's exactly what she is. I don't know if she's right for the part, never saw the show. But I'll tell ya this, ANYTIME at all that she needs a place to sit, my face is available. Funny you mentioned playing this boring song in Marching Band style. I'm a pianist/vocalist. A dear friend and fellow pianist used to play it John Phillip Sousa style, like a marching band only with solo piano. We'd laugh our asses off. He hated the song.

  • @Loejyrrab haha, did you ever see Woody Allen play cello in his high school marching band in take the money and run?

  • bernadette peters is better, she shows more emotion

  • ...so I guess it's simply, irrefutably impossible to like BOTH Bernadette and CZJ? okay then...

  • send in the mutah fuckin clowns!!!!!!

  • wait i'm confused who got the role zeta jones or peters? why are there videos of them doing this with the same actor on teh same set???

  • @LiverandOnions55 Zeta-Jones performed for 6 months and Bernadette Peters replaced her (and will be playing the role until it closes in January)

  • I saw Bernadette Peters play this part on Broadway just this last weekend. She sings the song with tears streaming down her face. Zeta Jones couldn't dredge up that much emotion over a real-life death in the family, let alone 'play' the emotion 8 times a week. I wanted very badly to see this musical, but I waited until Bernadette was in the role. I wouldn't cross the street to see Catherine Zeta-Jones play it, but I drove 9 hours to see Bernadette Peters. It was worth it 10 times over

  • @absoftitanium Well how would you know for sure who plays the role better if you never even bothered to see Catherine Zeta-Jones play the part but are so adament to praise Bernadette Peters when you have no one to compare her to. I mean I love Bernadette Peters and merely like Catherine Zeta-Jones but it's a bit ridiculous that you have formed an opinion about one actress playing a role when as you stated previously you "wouldn't cross the street to see Catherine Zeta-Jones play" the role.

  • @OhMyJuicebox CZJ is on the cast CD, and does a poor job rendering this song, as you can see in this and other videos of hers. I have seen a few movies of hers, and she has no acting talent. She's pretty, and that's about all.

  • @absoftitanium Well, I suppose you are entitled to your opinion, as I am mine.

  • @absoftitanium I travelled all the way from Singapore to New York just to watch Catherine Zeta Jones and I have to say its the best performance I have seen. You're wrong that she can't summon up the emotion for this role. She was crying towards the end of the song, and so was I. All these negative remarks only came when she was losing her voice and when she won a Tony. She was fantastic, and you missed it. Think about that. Don't criticize if you didnt even see her perform live.

  • can someone give me a background story on this song?

  • @treblemaker24

Look up the Soundheim musical, "A Little Night Music" on Wikipedia. Best info there... Wikipedia also has an article on the song itself.

  • Dame Taylor sang this the worst, but emoted it the best.

  • Zeta-Jones is a beautiful woman with a good voice and she sings well. But she's at least 10 years too young for this role. It's just not credible, her being spurned for a younger, more attractive woman. And she still sings it too much. See Judi Dench's rendition. It's supposed to be played by an aging actress, who *was* a young beauty, still feels that way, who is being slapped down by the man she loves. Z-J just doesn't have that, yet. But she's talented; she'll get there.

  • @alan2a1l

Zeta-Jones is 41... I'm sure plenty of women get rejected by men chasing girls half her age....

  • there is no definitive' woman' so allow these women their ruse on Sondheim's brilliance...his lyrics reasonate either through striesand in concert to those who actually play the role...we will all have a fav' actress but for US all they all have to feel a truth...so be kind. MS

  • Bernadette is superior in her abilities to sing a torch song that is touching and emotional.

Catherine is better at singing power ballads and such as Chicago.

Just two different styles of singers.

I wouldn't put too much weight into the experience except for acting.

    example is: Show girls.

  • @cranberries07

Oops... not showgirls- I meant Dream Girls.

What a mistake on my part - ha.

  • well song was meant to be talked bcuz of glynis johns, Its written that way, love Bernadette, but she tends, of late, to sing off pitch a bit, czj, well, this is not the film Chicago, and theater is an actors medium ( u have have chops or ya dont) film is a director/editor ' medium, they cut out all of the crap to make anyone look good, czc too young, and really not an actress of any depth

  • i just saw a little night music with bernadette peters, and there is no comparison. bernadette is a well-trained broadway star and catherine zeta-jones is a first time broadway actress. bernadette deserved the tony.

  • @feebster8 There's no doubt that Bernadette is amazing and experienced, but to be fair, Catherine does have stage training and experience, but mainly on the London stage. (Look up her bio.)

  • I think her and Bernadette, but I will say that they both bring their own little beautiful spin on the character..

  • beautiful theater artist. so good.

  • This song is meant to be acted, not sung, and in that respect, Zeta-Jones is brilliant.

  • Beautiful.

I much prefer how CZJ does the "don't bother, they're here" over Dench's take on that, though Dench is probably the the best for the rest of the song.

  • the night i went was the first night Catherine was off sick. the understudy was brilliant but would have loved to have seen Catherine. Angela Lansbury was fantastic

  • shes amazing

  • Had a front row seat watching CZJ sing this. Absolutely brilliant, Two types of comments here - bad ones are from those who haven't seen it. Those who have will have joined in the rapturous applause when you there...

  • Well actually, Idk who knows this but she did an interview where she specifically said that Steven Sondheim told her to mostly speak through it, especially since it was written for Glynis Johns who was not a singer. Just thought I'd mention it for those who didn't know.

  • i looked at all of these promo pieces...i think people have to remember they are just that promo pieces...the camera is right in their faces the lighting is off and everything seems over-exagerated im sure the show itself is much better

  • what the buck sent me...he was right, scary 0.o

  • Dreadful! This had to be the "twitchiest" performance of this scene ever. Can't wait to see the show again after Bernadette Peters takes over the Desiree role. And I suspect Elaine Stritch taking the Angela Lansbury role will be well worth seeing as well. Many people were shocked when she got the Tony.

  • she is a terrible actress. really woman, learn to sing. you don't deserve to be on broadway, and you definitely didn't deserve a tony.

  • Catherine was perfect, you have to see Catherine in the show or don't comment, she had amazing chemistry with the cast, especially Alex Hansen! She cried through the second half of the song, and obviously I am not the only one who feels her Tony was merited. Welcome to Broadway Catherine and hope to say welcome back some day!!!

  • Elizabeth Taylor's version was better and Elizabeth Taylor can't sing. But she's a better actress and she actedher way through the song more than just singing it. Thank god Bernadette Peters is taking the role over

  • My some people are so viscious...or too doting. She was passable, mostly engaging because of her astounding beauty. This very badly directed production and it's cheap production values did not do this masterpiece justice. The entire show, including Zeta-Jones, lacked elegance. Lansbury was amazing but the supporting cast was uniformly dreadful, especially Petra.

  • That is a poor performance of the song, very unprofessional and very bad taste for such a great song.

  • OMG - this is dreadful !! I actually thought it was a French & Saunders sketch at first. At the end I thought she was going to get up and give it some 'jazz hands' : (

  • This is awful. She pales in comparison to many so many (if not all) Briadway performers who have rendered "Send In The Clowns" before her.

  • THERE OUT TO BE MUTHA FUCKIN CLOWNS IN THIS BITCH TONIGHT!!

  • Sorry.... Please Miss Zeta Jones return the Toni and give it to one of the more deservants actresses that were nomitaded with you. .I like and admire your skills as an actress but this is not the best perofrmance of the year.or be a bit like Ingrid Bergman who" shared "her OSCAR with someone she tought was more deservant than herself . Be elegant..Be a real Broadway player.Thanks.

  • Zeta Jones ONLY WHAT A STAGE PRESENCE SHE'S SO SENSUAL ,SEDUCTIVE

Incredible, and LANSBURY SHE'S A DIVA AND MUSSE OF SONDHAIM

  • what a remarkably bad performance. with all the great broadway actresses out there THIS is what they chose for the first revival of Little Night Muisc?

  • with so many great broadway actresses out there THIS is what they chose to sing the first revival of little night music! good going producers.

  • What little there was of the video was very impressive. Its a difficult role, normally intended for a much older woman. Ironically her husbands bunny boiler ex-stalker Glen Close performed this to great acclaim.

The best version I have ever heard was from Judy Dench who, although not on par with Catherine or Ruthie vocally, brings much more sentimentality to the role.

  • I am a huge fan of the Ruthie Henshall version (which is a grandeur version rather than the show version), but after seeing the show (A Little Night Music) from front row, house right., about a week ago...I am so glad Catherine won that Tony award....her acting throughout the musical was outstanding. The context of this song is lost without knowing the character's personality and the story.

  • wow i have new respect for her now :) when i always heard her name in movies, i'd be like 'whatever'

  • I'm so glad she won!!! She really is amazing in this show!

  • Catherine is amazing, regardless of what anyone says!!

She deserves the Tony, and in my heart whatever happens tonight, I truly believe it is hers <3

She did a wonderful performance that brought so much to me...

  • Catherine Zeta-Jones, with this number, truly brings a new dimension into the show. With her and Angela Lansbury together, "A Little Night Music" earns a shining place on the theater world that cannot soon, if at all, be surpassed. Wondrous show.

  • I do not think she has a great voice, but she is a really great actress and her Broadway debut was successful in my opinion. Angela Lansbury was terrific as the grandmother, and lee Ann Larkin as Petra is almost a show stealer. I love Bernadette Peters, but frankly can't quite see her doing this role.

  • @raycyn1 I can see Bernadette Peters doing ANY role. I cannot wait to see her in this, she'll be phenomenal.

  • No disrespect to Miss Z-J, but are there any youtubers in St. Louis who might have recorded Amy Irving's attempt at this? Thanks!

  • Its just been announced Catherine left the show and shes been replaced by none other than BERNADETTE PETERS.. LET THE PROFESSIONALS GET TO WORK...

  • Sorry to say, but she is off pitch a lot in this clip. The performance is quite felt and quite good from the acting point but from the musical point, it is a little lacking to say it nicely.

  • There's no soul in this i am not feeling the emotion - sorry cath you don't sound desperate enough

  • @julie223783 you have to keep in mind this was a press call, not an actual performance. the song could have been performed completely out of context making true emotion of a song harder to do when performed that way. it ends up sounding more like a solo performance rather than part of the production and her character. I saw her in this and really touched me during this scene especially. Greatly deserved that Tony in my opinion

  • She is a beautiful woman. Only this. Angela Lansbury, Judy Dench and Sally Ann Howes don't need to be worried.

  • I bought the cd yesterday. The quintet are fine though the London cast were better. Lansbury is wonderful but CZJ is so indescribably terrible (on cd ) that all one can do is skip the tracks where she features. I have rarely heard such an amateur-ish performance on a Broadway cast recording. Awful!

  • she is so attractive.

  • could not have enjoyed myself in NYC Broadway any more!!! I there has to be a DVD of this out ASAP!!!

  • She's beautiful and aaaaw her voice...! I love her voiceeee!

  • I saw her in March and was quite disappointed. She was off all her notes and she lacked chemistry with her make counterpart. The rest of the cast was brilliant however. Just my opinion

  • Great acting but the voice technique is simply not there.

  • The video doesn't do her justice. She was really good in the show...

  • I saw this. Front Row. She was amazing and mesmerizing!!! This video does not do her justice!

  • While singing, she doesn't pronounce the end of her words.

I saw her on Letterman saying, "I'm only singing this much tonight. If you want to see more, you'll have to pay $250.00 for a ticket to the show."

  • @1nycgal She really said that? Wow -- not too nice, since many can't afford to see a Broadway show! Although you would only pay $250 for the most premium front and center seats. You can get good orchestra seats for a little over $100 and balcony seats for $52.

  • @1nycgal Um, as far as this video goes she pronounces the end of her words..

  • I wanted so to enjoy this. I bought the cd today, and I was so disappointed. At least here she is emoting. In the cd, she is singing it straight on. During reprise, with Egerman, she is better....but not happy. Could be nerves, knowing so many would want her to fall flat....but her voice is not so great for these types of songs. This song is an emotionally wrenching song, but she belts it out like she is Mamma Rose. Lansbury, Larkin and guy who does Henrik, great!

  • She sucks. She is not trained!

  • @0626saraf

Wrong, she trained in a 3 years BA course in Musical Theatre.

  • Watch Judi Dench sing this song, and then tell me how you feel...

  • Call me crazy guys....but she kinda sounds like a young Patti Lupone...

  • @fossilkid4life um... i think Zeta is great, Patti's incredible, but from your opinion, was that a compliment to Catherine or and insult

  • this video totally doesn't reflect how wonderful she is live - I saw the show a few days ago, not expecting much from Catherine because of this video, and I was pleasantly surprised. she was SO great.

  • Oh God no.

  • Only top stars get invited to the Royal Albert Hall and that is where Glenn Close sang in the company of Donnie Osmond who sang songs from Joseph and the amazing technical dream coat. Also Byzonne were among the invited to perform. It definitely was not at Hyde Park.

  • For the NAYSAYERS: Have you seen a little movie called CHICAGO!!!! Catherine has a brilliant voice and classic talent....how about you look up The View and watch her most recent interview....many times an actor gets criticized for how they sing in a musical people fail to realize that half of it is because that's how the director wanted it

  • This video does not do her justice at all -- I just saw the show last night. She really has a beautiful and well-trained voice.

  • what a remarkably bad performance. with all the great broadway actresses out there THIS is what they chose for the first revival of Little Night Muisc?

  • @mimmar3891 too bad Catherine Zeta-Jones was drunk just about every night when she went on stage

  • glen close beats them all

  • NO!!!

    ELIZABETH TAYLOR!!!

  • Catherine has the beauty but Glenn Close proved her talent at the Andrew Lloyd Webster's birthday celebration performance with her great talent. What talent has Catherine without her beauty?????

  • And the money and connections to buy an Oscar!!!

Who can honestly believe that she is a better actress than Meryl Streep or Julianne Moore?

  • Comment removed

  • @koln1996

i do belive catherine was better in chicago than julianne and meryl streep

julianne moore is really good specially in chloe, and im really interested to watch her as clarice starling in hanniball but her oscar Nom was the tipicall oscar drama movie the same goes for meryl streep´s nom

    sorry meryl streep fans

    i dont like mryl streep

    going back to catherine oscar

    she deserved it

she was amazing as velma kelly.

  • @sarizonana um... I am not sure what you are talking about... Meryl Streep has never been performed this number or been in A Little Night Music... I think you are thinking of Glenn Close...

  • @kennyalancramer

i was not talking about this performance or how good she is with this song i was defending catherine from the people who said right here that

she didnt deserve her her oscar for chicago.

  • Glenn sang 2 songs from Sunset Boulavard. She performed with the likes of Sarah Brightman, Michael Ball Elaine Page, Dame KIrie te Kanawa and got a tremendous reception from the audience. Catherine without her beauty is just another hollywood star

  • To Holly Mallett-If you look back over the comments you will see where Glenn Close sang. Not in a park but at the Royal Albert Hall. The whole celebration was top notch talent and Glen Close held the audience in awe.

  • I just saw the show last night. I don't say this lightly, but she truly was talented and held her own with the others. This video absolutely does not do her justice. Her voice was clear and strong with beautiful vibratto, not overdone but not amateurish either.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh definitely, Glenn Close is the best.

  • I've seen this production in London and New York. Both were wonderful but Catherne Zeta-Jones is simply a revelation. Ravishing!

See this if you possibly can

  • An AMAZING show. A wonderful debut for Catherine! Bravo!!!!

  • @ laineylacy38 GROSS and it isnt an amature video this is one of the most POWERFULL songs in the whole Broadway musical....

  • Saw her and Angela Landsbury. They were both SO amazing.

  • the show was very fun to see

  • this clip has twice the number of views that Angela has, both ladies are amazing, don't miss this show folks!

  • Bravo Catherine, my friends and I enjoyed your performance immensely, welcome Broadway!!!

  • In the theater you have to project a little more than you do in the movies

  • trying to hard?

Over acted in my opinion. This song works much better when it's sung with more resignation.

  • I mean, the song doesn't need the best voiced person behind it. Remember Glynis Johns didn't have the best voice, neither did Judy Dench.

I think Catherine SINGS this song with much beauty, but because the many people in the past including the OBC have "sung spoke" the song, we find this different.

  • sounds like she's saying "don't you love farts"... LOVE IT! Keep it up Zeta!

  • wow!

  • she's so beautiful :)

  • want to see this so bad!
