This is more than amazing! I am from Uzbekistan, work and live in Beijing, China. I have been planning to set up a fish farm. Searching for some tips about fish faring I came across this... it's more than I was looking for,,, This project would be great help to the families to make a better living in Uzbekistan where low income and unemployment rate is high.
i cant see how your mechanical filter with the filter pads is able to catch the debris when the water is entering the tanks about mid way... also, how is the water pushed through the 6 IBC and into the vortex without any pump to push it through?? i have been studying your design and it seems to defy physics,,, can you explain please,, thanks guys!
where can you find those filter pads you are using in your 55 gal filter? Ihave looked everywhere for them here and no luck,,please someone help me here, thanks
Microwaves cause the stray ions in the grape to travel back and forth very quickly between the two halves. As they do this, the current dumps excess energy into the skin bridge, which heats up to a high temperature and eventually bursts into flame. At this point, the traveling electrons arc through the flame and across the gap, ionizing the air to a plasma (which itself can conduct electricity) and creating the bright flashes you see. (Popular Science Blog)
You guys ( and gals ) are doing a very good job ! ,, Very State of the Art set-up ,, and good for everyone involved ,, including the whole neighborhood !
Hi there I'm very impressed with your system .and I would like to build it my self in London .do you have a step by step guide .? Thank you and keep up the good work.
Is it warm year round where you live? I live in the Maritimes - great summer weather but below zero temperatures for about 8 months of the year. Would it be feasible to have something like this but in a smaller scale considering the cold weather?
@jellydrop It should be relatively mild winters where they are located but they are attempting to use biogas to heat the greenhouse where they keep the aquaponic system. Given the scale of their biogas system and the relatively mild winters they should be able to do it, or at least come very close to it. 8 months of below zero won't cut it with tilapia unless you have a small nuclear plant heating your system. You would probably need a pretty high tech high energy system to maintain it.
@jellydrop wait, is it really that cold in maritime? 8 months below zero or was that an exageration? I could see maybe a few months below zero but 8? Wow...
@jellydrop I was just thinking... obviously you mean 0 Celsius, not Fahrenheit like how we usually measure environmental temperature in the US. I forget that Canada uses Celsius for everything (which is probably a lot less confusing than using both depending on what you are doing like we do in the US).
Hey guys, I have a small lake/large pond in my backyard and was wondering if it would be feasible to take 2 old Sunfish Hulls, build a pvc greenhouse frame over them and use the water straight from the pond for a now Floating Greenhouse? I believe these boats have a foam inside and won't sink beyond a point. And, the body of water is over 80yrs old with a underground spring supplying so it has a established ecosystem already. Hoping a floating water filter will allow for a denser fish ratio.
@purebyu, Hey that is an awesome idea. I would love to see you video document this idea to share! It seems to be a great venue (aquaponics) for ingenuitive folks! I live in Alaska and am putting together a plan to work year round in a greenhouse that doesnt suck alot of money heating and lighting. Good Luck and hope you share the process and results!
there is a company in my home town that just started an aquaponics operation. saw a bit about them on my local news, just google northern indiana aqua products
Woops! Good to know the difference between aqua and hydroponics. When I explain it to my coworkers they look at me sideways like I'm secretly talkin about pot or somethin. Nope! I was just pronouncing it incorrectly
GRAPES IMMERSED IN AN ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD. EQUAL POTENTIAL LINES ARE COMPRESSED INSIDE THE GRAPES AND IN THE GAP BETWEEN THE GRAPES INCREASING THE VOLTAGE GRADIENT IN THE STEAM FILLED REGION CAUSING AIR BREAKDOWN (ARCING)
Dielectric spheres one or more wavelengths in diameter form a special class of microwave antenna structure. When a dielectric sphere is immersed in a microwave field the spheres concentrate the electric field lines along an axis as shown in Figure A. If the sphere is slightly elongated, the field will usually align with the longest axis.
Have you come across Zeolites? Would they be any good for increasing the surface area for bacterial growth? I'm a chemist, not a biologist or such like, so I'll have to find the time to look into it, but when it comes to surface area, Zeolites are where it's at.
@TheBoyFromNorfolk Zeolites are incredible. We don't use them now, but while we were building the system we relied heavily upon them to pull ammonia out of the water in a smaller system. Now our system does all the work. For those who are wondering Zeolite is a rock that is porous that does a great job of absorbing ammonia. It can then be recharged by soaking in saltwater to release the ammonia and be used again.
I know that some people like to put earthworms in their grow beds to take care of any of the solids that make it through the filters. You might want to look into that.
@BurntEngineOil thanks man! yes our earthworms do thrive up in the grow bed. we've put a handfull in just for fun. We are building up our earthworm population now probably have 80k. i am still skeptical if they would completely take care of all the solids as they excrete waste themselves. I should give it a shot in our barrelponics model
I'M PERSUING A RAW VEGAN DIET SO I WOULDN'T WANT TO GROW FISH, BUT YOUR SYSTEMS APPROACH DOES HAVE MERIT. I WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD SIMPLY USE A LARGE TANK TO GROW SEAWEED OR OTHER PLANTS AND THEN USE THEIR BY PRODUCTS FOR PLANTS. FOR EXAMPLE I KNOW THAT SEAWEED IS USED AS A FERTILIZER. TYPICALLY WHEN YOU GO UP THE ECOLOGICAL FOOD CHAIN YOU LOOSE 90 PERCENT OF THE ENERGY VALUE, IF YOU CHECK YOUR NUMBERS YOU MIGHT DISCOVER THAT YOU'LL GET MORE NUTRITION OUTPUT PER CUBIC FOOT WITH WATER PLANTS
@whothehellgivesadamn From everything I've read, you really need some sort of animal (like fish) that will create the nitrates. I don't think there are any plants that can fill that role. I'm not an expert though.
I'm curious though, would you consider such a system as long as the fish were given a comfortable home? There's actually no need to eat the fish. You could keep them as pets.
@BurntEngineOil RIGHT, SO THEORETICALLY YOU COULD HAVE SOMETHING LIKE SAY A FISH POND, ROCK GARDEN SYSTEM, WHERE THE FISH JUST LIVE THERE LIVES IN THE POND, AND THEN AMONGST THAT MAYBE SOME SEAWEED GROWING, WHICH COULD BE USED. I'M NOT DOGMATIC ABOUT ANY OF THIS, IT WOULD JUST BE MORE TO MY TASTE TO GROW PLANTS RATHER THAN ANIMALS. THE OTHER THING I'M INTRODUCING IS AESTHETICS, SO INSTEAD OF JUST A MAKESHIFT FACTORY, THE WHOLE THING COULD BE TURNED INTO AN ARTISTICALLY AESTHETIC DEVELOPMENT
@tristbjorn LOL. I did have some guys come by itching to take this system over to california. Yes hydroponics generally relies on chemicals introduced from outside of the system. aquaponics relies on the fish waste.
Awesome video! We're just south of KC in Belton, would love to swap tours of gardens and such. Utilizing composting, chickens, organic, permaculture and companion planting techniques, I've got an extensive suburban garden that has people gawking and talking, and you guys obviously have some amazing ideas. Can we swap ideas sometime?

@dragonamt yes, you're exactly right, I was using celsius degrees. My bad - I should have used Farenheit since this is an American video!

@jellydrop we should all just switch to SI units: Kelvin... Then again maybe not... 273.15 K water freezing point at sea level lol.
