Can anyone give me a step by step on how to change my e39 transmission fluid. Where is the fill plug and where is the drain plug?? If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Thanks
Good video mate, note on the GM 5L40e, another good way to increase the life of the transmission is to fit it with a transmission cooler, not ones that go through the radiator of the car as they tend to break open and leak water into the transmission. (Happens to alot of cars here in australia) The cooler will help control the fluid and keep it at a resonable level and help prevent cooking the oil.
Very informative video. thnx for the post i got a 2000 bmw 528i n it has round 135.000mi n thinking of doing a whole tune up n trans oil change up n filter.
fill plug is located on the side of the tranny just above the oil pan. drain plug is that hex-nut thing on the bottom of the pan.
bogdandorianC: Dexron III should be fine, it's just not going to be good for as long as the newer stuff would. i'd say 15-25k miles MAXIMUM with Dex 3. people could probably go 35-50k with Dex 6 although i personally wouldn't. and yes, i have the same transmission as you.
I have a 2001 facelift BMW e39 525Diesel, and have a 5 speed GM automatic transmission(I think it's GM 5L40E). Do you also have that kind of automatic gearbox?
If you do, please notice me, because I gave an order for Castrol Dexron III oil and want to ask you a few things!
it has been about 6000 miles now since this service was done, and the car still works great. the only time i wouldn't mess with it is if the car already has driveability problems related to the transmission like slipping, in which case changing the fluid could make it worse. otherwise you should be OK. how many miles does yours have on it?
