When i see stuff like this structural and technological innovations i feel great pride for mankind and great hope.......until i see videos like "my tram experience" lol
Well that doesnt give a very good impression, only 20 secs in and the narrator makes a crucial mistake -"Nearly Half a Kilometre Tall..." Thats bollox, its well over half a kilometre at 828 metres. Its half a MILE high. silly mistake..
@NiceHeadMr yeh I know I was born there and it was pretty fuckin shit but didn't u hear the guy at the start of the vedio? He said that Dubai is the worlds most fastes growing city in the world wouldn't they get greenery from somewhere and make it look more life like and more inviromentaly that's somehow going to happen there in the near future
Look at Dubai its a fucken desert. Who wants to have penthouse view of desert and smog. If you can aford to make the worlds tallest building you can afford to plant some fucken trees. God knows you'll go bankrupt if you don't sell oil so inventing cleaner running cars is out of the question.
@CpFan334 TUT TUT TUT you poor stupid red neck..... Dubai or any of it rulers have never been directly or indirectly involved with any act of terrorism so why fly a plane into the Al Burj Arab? I for one take my hat off to the rulers and decision makers in Dubai for having a long term plan for they relize the liquid gold is not a bottomless pit.
@mochmon i think u got ur towers mixed up. The burj al arab is that 7-star hotel they built on their first man-made island. Im 99% sure that you meant to say: burj dubai, or its new name: burj khalifa. Just tryin to help out. And p.s, your statement about the rulers having a long term plan is very accurate. They will continue to be lucrative from tourism long after their liquid gold runs out. And what a fuckin lil' earwig that guy (CpFan334) is for saying we should destroy the burj dubai
Just so any one did not realize the 19th century is in the 1800s. and 20th century is that 1900s. and now the 21st century through 2000, and now 2010!
This programme was made BEFORE the Sears Tower and Burj Dubai changed their names to the Willis Tower and Burj Khalifa respectively. They producers had no idea that the building were going to change names.
I understand that the building was renamed Burj Khalifa upon it's official opening this month. Up until then, or at least while under construction (and definitely when this program was made) it was the Burj Dubai.
Therefore I think the comment below about getting the name right is a little unfair
"From the sands of the Arabian desert, rises the tallest man-made structure on Earth. A city in the sky, nearly half-a-kilometre [sic] tall, the Burj Dubai is the pinnacle of skyscraper engineering. It owes its success to seven key inventions. We have lined up seven landmark buildings, historic giants of the skyscraper world.
At the heart of each one, lies a major technological innovation that allowed engineers to reach ever taller into the sky. One-by-one, travelling up the scale, we'll reveal the incredible stories behind these structures and the inventions that have driven them higher. Seven ingeniously thought that had enabled skyscrapers to evolve from Big, to Bigger, into the world's BIGGEST!"
YES, of course, it is! Just like the lofty one in Chicago, it is now called the WILLIS Tower, NOT Sears Roebuck Tower anymore, savvy? Then how is it that by getting the building's name right is little unfair, given that I am merely stating its true facts? Maybe only for you, but if you already knew that it has been renamed, why do you bother to ask?
i am a guy who has been brought up in dubai, born in raised in here..i love this country..n dubai specially gave alot of opportunities to the westerners, am an arab ana am proud to be part of dubai i have seen it from nothing today...Dubai ROCKs N UAE RULES...soo ppl in the western world americans ....dont hate .... obama's family financed?? come on dude!...it was financed by HH Sheikh khalifa the ruler of UAE...N sheikh mohammed ruler of Dubai... i live 5 mins away from this tower...
It's interesting how these sorts of ostentatious projects are praised in the western world but when "3rd world" countries do it they are criticized for having the wrong priorities, ect as if they aren't capable of managing their own economies.
@86am That's because people are starving in those countries and everything is shit. If Japan had built skyscrapers after the tsunami then people would have said the same. Of course they didn't, since the Japanese are capable of running a society, something arabs have clearly showed they are unable to.
this building will be the laughing stock of the world 10 or 20 yrs from now.Only a few can affort to live a nd work in it,half of the building will be a total waste of space,,and with oil no longer be the only source of energy the whole damn town will slowly but surely will dissapeard in the sand storms.I wonder how many arabs from poor families and no resources can I educate and give a better living with 1.5 Billion USA Dollasrs??
In fact he could but he's probably saving all he can as at now. I like how wealthy Arabians do things...they take bold steps financially and it usually pays off in the end.
they aren't doing it for fun? wtf!! They are investing in alternate ways of producing income because there current main source of income is oil and we all know its depleting fast. I think they are smart. Their human rights ethics are questionable though.
well oh course it looks like a ghost town(actually it was couple of decades ago, more like 1990) its a desert with no plantation.when they start planting trees, grassy, palm trees, it will look like an oasis, like a dreamy world. i can invision it right now, just give it a bit of an imagination. dubai will will become the center world, everyone in the world will come visit, live, pass by. its becoming like vegas except for the hookers, drugs, etc.
except for the hookers?? HAHA dude u ever been to one of those clubs in a hotel in Deira? Crawling with hookers. Hell you will also find hookers on the street in Al-Murqabat!
As far as drugs are concerned, I am sure if you have the connection, you can find them!
no, they have alot of money. their fuckin rich! soooo rich, they build towers like these, but hey im not complaining, i think its fuckin awesome! arabs were always intelligent too by the way, just look at their histroy.
Amazing!! That building is fantastic!! Oh..my mistake, DUBAJ city isc the most amazing place on earth!! It's my dream to visit. Who know the melody of start of film??
@HiAdrian I think he said that during the time this video was shot, the tower was half a km tall. The building wasnt finished until 2009. Half a kilometer is still around 1,800 feet or something like that (i think lol) I think when they finished in in 2009, it was like somewhere around 2300 feet. Once again i could be wrong but im just trying to make sense out of what the narrator said regarding it being half a km in height at the time of this vid. P.S: the metric system sucks :P :P
You're talking final height. I bet when this program was made it still hadn't passed the Taipei 101, let alone the CN Tower or (just recently) the KVLY-TV radio mast, at just over 2000 feet or about 630 metres.
Or as Hiadrian said, they might have mixed up imperial and metric; if the proposed final height of over 800 meters is to be believed, that would put it at over 2600 feet, just shy of half a mile.
I said 800 meters was just shy of half a mile. 804.67 meters would be half a mile exactly, if you want to split hairs. The truth is i've heard final height estimates ranging from 720 meters to 818 meters. We won't know the official final height until the building opens next fall.
