Totally! But I also thought that as well as best friend Sirius was the link to his past and the dad that was wrenched awat from him!

That part in the book had me in hysterics, so did Sirius death (OotP) and Remus death (Btw JK did not do him proud it was like an after thought - oh btw remus is dead!) and the bit where Harry saw the night his parents died.

I think what they mean is that if James & Sirius hadn't decided to switch the Secret Keeper from Sirius to Peter, then Peter couldn't have betrayed the Potters. And if Harry had never been born, Voldemort wouldn't have gone after them to begin with. Not to mention James & Sirius's treatment of Snape in school; had things been different he might never have become a Death Eater in the first place & hence wouldn't have reported the prophecy.

Er, I did read it - stood in line for it at midnight, in fact, with a lot of other wonderfully obsessed people - and I think it bolsters my assertion that Snape's childhood - including the way he was treated by the Marauders, while DD apparently turned a blind eye - probably played a large part in the way he turned out. If not for them, his relationship w/Lily wouldn't have been so strained, & who knows what might've happened.
