Was a Sat diver in the North Sea 1971 - 1980. Great life . We were on a dollar a foot per day and a basic of £1000 per month - Month on/month off. In 1975 I was earning £5000 per month, but it was easy come, easy go!!. It was very experimental then and we were doing 12 hour lockouts working solo. In those days health and safety was no existent. Once we were told we were going to experiment with Neon gas as Helium was too expensive, so we just did what we were told. Not a great experience!
the minimum wage for a sat diver currently is about £1200 a day, there's only a handful of people who are qualified for this kind of diving, If I remember correctly it costs about £12,000 - £14,000 do train for this
everytime I see a commercial diving vid I get a woody I have to say im so inspired to do this work I know its hard but ive been in the army 6 years and really want to move on to something i think will be more fun and rewarding. im open water certified and I know thats not much but I feel that this is where its at. thank you for your inspiration even though I know that might not be the intension here.
I decided to stay behind and work as a hyperbaric tech and an EMT in southern California. I also went back to school and getting ready to enter into a R.N. Nursing program. I realized that work is too slow there after 10-15 years I will burn out and I need to come home to career. I wouldn't be able to find one because every employer I go too will say "hey your a nice guy, but you have been out in the middle of the ocean drilling for oil, what can you do for us?" I have to pay my dues now
the artist is chicane its called saltwater.I am a current uk part 2 sat diver average working depth 200m on a 98/2 he02 mix. Top end divers can clear between £800 to £1k per day
@satdivertony ..yep ya sure can...earn heaps..but then you die..and your missus..or G/F..get the lot.....what a fucking dull life.....all for..da money.....tell it how it is bro..it sucks,....thats why I got out of it after 15 fucking years...it aint nothing to rave about...living like a sardine 24/7..you will get sick of it..no matter how much money...
I'm looking for a french documentary i saw a few years ago: "La vie en saturation", about saturation at the north sea. i cannot find it anywhere. If someone could help me (better if translated or subtitled to english or spanish, but even in french or any other language) i'd be really really grateful. Thanks a lot
Some of the best under water professional work is in the area of research, and robotics. Go back to school and look into the sciences, it's a whole other arena and not necessarily offshore though it would take you there. The opportunities worldwide would afford you to come accross innovative companies and special research teams who are Pioneers in their sector.
i would really recomend you NOT to do that that is not a hobbie or a job its a pain in the ass and BORING mine clearing duties while there is NO OFFSHORE WAR what the fuck and you are a good size just not the good age for the job im14 and im a NAUI advanced cert. so id like to chat and give u some tips (if youd like so) reply back and you are free to ask anything (wiyhin my cert.) and anything else ill ask my friend fellow diver and instruktor hes 1 of the best in the indusry reply bk
@ollietheocta I would do something else, the global economy sucks, and is having a bad effect on the off shore oil industry, and now with this oil spill in the gulf, it is really going to make things bad for several years to come.
@ollietheocta Right now no, but you know things don't last forever, so I suspect that things will improve in a few years. Other diving jobs would be a police diver, inland diving work such as on dams, water towers and aquariums and teaching scuba. If you really want to be an off-shore diver, than you just have to do it. With a bit of luch you can get on with a decient company, and with a bit of determination, you can put up with being a tender for 5 years before being an actual diver.
ok, i just graduated dive school and im getting ready to go to the gulf. I wan to apply with Cal Dive Whats a good company to work for and what can I expect. I am a DMT and I can't make up my mind. Should I stay here and work as a hyperbaric tech and EMT, or go to the GOM ? tell me what you think
If you desire a good agency name on the western coast message me, if you desire on on the eastern coast I havea few, but to have expossure to the North Sea is excellent, and do some work with the Arab platforms. we have some some dynamic research out there it isn't always related to oil either. There is so much, and the experience you gain has to be diverse making you more marketable.
the course is called 'mixed gas closed bell' which means saturation, mixed gas diving is just surface diving with mixed gas,not even sure they have courses for that commercially
Diving in pitch with zero visibility is a great challenge.
In school we were asked to remove all our hardware and put it all back on with a feed of air coming from an extention blind folded. Some panic but after some confidence you muster the calm to do just that.
@ourboyjack , you tell'em Troy, put it in all by your self, didnt ya.... :-) we didnt even need to leavethe bell.... (wern't so flash at flushing the shitter though.... lol)
God help the real guys I have been part of this and noboby knows the truth about the harm that can happen to your body and mind.. take the money and run!
@Sakul1321 Sat diving over years can lead to neurological problems. Also, there really isn't much silence because dive control is constantly talking to you about everything. If they aren't talking about the job at hand, then they tend to be talking about something else. Sometimes I just want to tell them to shut the hell up, but I think they talk to keep you from actually having the time to comprehend your actual situation and how dangerious it could really be.
ive been told that over the next 5 years 500 new sat divers will be needed for the projected work, and internationally there will only be 250 created. now's the time to get into it. make sure you are trained by a reputable institute or you can get burned like deepsea said

I'm wondering how you guys install the gasket, what type it is, and how you ensure the faces are clean from debris flowing in.
How do you bring the flanges together without banging into the gasket face? Seems like the pipe could easily drift if its rigged from the surface.
Is there a pressure test on completion of the job?
How long did the operation to fit and close the flange take?
Thanks.
