When I listen to a Toscanni recording, I sense a certain beauty in the performance. Something that says to me that this is the true way to be perfomed. With other great conductors, even though their performance is completely valid, somehow it does not evoke the emotional response that Toscanini does. When you hear Toscanini conducting the same piece, you hear something that other conductors seem to have missed, something so beautiful that leaves you in awe.

la migliore, a parer mio, di quei 3 minuti e 40 secondi circa, prima del prorompere nella luminosità weberiana

Is this Carnegie Hall or Studio 8H?--anyone know?
I am very impressed with Toscanini's take on this masterpiece. He really brings out the drama, mystery and atmosphere.
I too adore Kleiber's interpretation, but Toscanini has the better band!

What perfection!
And complete integrety to the music..
Arturo Toscanini was indeed a magical conductor.

Isn't the picture reversed? Double basses and cellos on the left of the conductor?

A great conductor: of course after Carlos Kleiber.

This piece really starts kicking at 5:28! I love the dry acoustics, you can hear everything. Toscanini needs to be reincarnated!

Fabulous performance. Toscanini wasn't only a great conductor, he was also a force of nature.

What a great conductor Toscanini was! I find the earlier performances more compelling, with some exceptions, than his later work; this is gorgeous.

I have played this before, and it was so much fun to play. My favorite part of the piece is at 3:24.
