@leonardogzm That title was chosen because it was an experiment in alternate marketing. I'm normally fairly humble but sometimes you have to attract attention to your cause if you truly believe in what you are doing. Think of it more tongue and cheek...
@RozarSmacco :O! ok ok i totally get your point marshall i really dont wanna be a hater, you are totally right about self promoting and marketing thing, sorry if that bothers you! big fan from colombia! :)
this has just changed my approach to guitar .the degree of relaxation in the playing shows where most of us go wrong.the term hammer on should be replaced.with something that suggests smoothness and flow
Is the shawn lane vigier good for rhythm (i.e. funk heavy riffing etc) as well as soloing. thinking of getting rid of my suhr modern for one, onlt i would change the pickups for greater versatility. Thanks very much.
@Jackwoolley I don't foresee any issue in playing funk with an SL Vigier. Any chords I've gone for have been made easier by virtue of the advances Shawn Lane has brought to the guitar.
@RozarSmacco Sorry just one more question. Do you find you have any problems with fret buzz? Especially when a more aggressive picking/strumming attack is used. I'v heard mainly positive feedback but one or two people have complained about buzz on every fret! Thanks.
@Jackwoolley This guitar WHEN properly setup by a trained luthier doesn't buzz in the least. If you set the action unreasonably low you're probably going to achieve some "unreasonable" sounds. As I've stated time and again and into the future, I can't say enough great things about the Vigier Excalibur Shawn Lane. Patrice Vigier has achieved THE most playable guitar on the planet. I wouldn't try half of my most technical ideas on any other instrument.
@42littlebit Yes. low action means that the "Magic" is at least possible. High-action means the more technical ideas are probably not going to come through.
@PIMPZproduction In this video, I'm using everything in my musical "toolbox". I've always believed that a player shouldn't just pick one technique over the others and forget everything else. One should be able to utilize all of them: alternate, sweep, hybrid picking. legato, hammer-from-nowhere, etc ...
It's pretty simple. The key to speed is rhythm. you have to know how to play equal amount of notes within a beat for instance sixteenth notes triplets are 6 notes per beat. Make sure they're equal. never too short of the beat. As for practicing, you can use a major scale or even the pentatonic scale.
@nikki435 I highly recommend playing along with Paul Gilbert's Intense Rock DVD (VHS in my formative years). I would play along using sweep picking and just match him or pause him and play till I got the idea. Do that everyday when you wake up for the first five or so years. Then do the same with Shawn Lane's videos Power Solos and the other one. Gambale's videos "Monster Licks" and "Workout" were fun to play along with as well.
i love the tone and the playing. i suppose it reminds me of rusty cooley, but with (imo) a better tone and less non-stop shred. don't get me wrong i love non-stop shred, but i also love the more controlled shred.
so true. his playing kind of reminded me of somebody, but i couldn't put my finger on it so i just said rusty cooley. i was thinking of holdsworth, but i was new to him at the time so he didn't come to mind as quickly as i wanted him to.
What sort of picks do you use? They look very "petite" like these Jazz picks i got one time but am not used to playing with. They also look like they have a dip where your thumb and finger touch it. If you could explain a little I would appreciate it very much. Thank you :)
btw i don't know if you're a fan of shawn lane but i'd love to see you do a cover of him and i'm sure everyone else here would love to see it preferably get you back :)
did shawn use your all-hammer-on approach? i've been experimenting with those fast 3rd (or 3rd-esque, if doing more chromatic stuff) runs that he does, and am almost able to do it to the speed you are getting, but still a little off. you thing the pull-off may affect that? i may have to practice the all hammer-on thing; it's just awkward at the moment.
i have one shawn lane vigier too...the neck is really big...i was really surprised by that....anyway shawn lane was playing on it, so let's do it..great work marshall ;-)
I concur. Compare MAB's technique to this guy's: MAB is tense all the time, trying fuck all hard to pump all the speed he can, when this guy's keeping cool and hanging loose (which happens to be the proper technique). As hard as it is to say this, many of my favorite players use improper technique, but not this guy. Keep playing that guitar man.
Also I have a question: what guage of strings do you use, and how would you place the feel of your fretting technique: extremely soft, hard, or what?
i know, i just prefer slower melodic stuff, i wasnt using MAB as an example he was a milestone as up until this video id never seen anyone as consistently awesome as him xD
it's just amazing how you manage to do such sweeping and economic picking combined so fluidly...
check out my classical piece, it is just called etude, i wrote it 2 years ago (when i was 16) and i think you'll like it... it sounds like tchaikovsky although i didnt even know any of his stuff when i composed that piece...
I guess the tabs for this should be about 5000 pages

it feels nice. It would be even nicer if it was thinner...like the Ibanez Wizard.
One of these days, I'm going to get a guitar company to make the ULTIMATE MCH model guitar, the most playable guitar ever contructed.
RozarSmacco 3 years ago 7
Why don't you just dand the neck down to be thinner and oil it up?
(I have done it myself to an excalibur btw)
vigier still use graphite in lieu of a trussrod so it's safe

have you gave ESP guitar's a try? i mean the actual ESP's not those LTD ones.
