  • How high does your vertical have to be to be a decent high jumper? I know that good form is necessary, but if you can't jump high, then you won't be a good high jumper. My vertical is around 33" and I am a junior in high school. I want to do the high jump but I don't want to make a clown of myself. I know that I jumped a little over my height when I was in sixth grade at a school track meet. I can dunk a softball sized ball on a regular hoop. I am 5' 8".

  • @tdheoembaesl your vertical is good most professional high jumpers have low to mid 30s for their verticals so you'd be set

  • @tdheoembaesl 33" is good. im 12 and mine is 24. my brother is 17 and he has about a 35-40

  • He comes out of the curve before he plants his takeoff foot. As a result, he has to dive over the bar, doesn't leave the ground vertically and clears the bar by more with his upper body than with his lower body. This takes away from the vertical component of his jump and adds to the horizontal component. See technique information on highjumpcoach web site.

  • how tall are you?

  • Nice vid man! I cannot get myself to break my arch at the right time and am stuck at 5'10". I always clip the bar with my foot!

  • good form, I am an ex high jumper/decathlete. I went 6'6" and I stand 5'8". You definitly have a lot of talent. Good luck to you.

  • @bradcordova i'm a decathlete,my best is 6'1'' but i stand 6'2''.... more of a thrower and kinda of a vaulter haha

  • @flexyfork i always sucked at the throwing events. Except the jav.

  • nice fosbury flop lols

  • nice, im jumpin 5f t, 13 years old, form suckks tho, need to arch my backk

  • this is not a right technique

  • that was good you don't use your arms though you just have ups if you would use your arms you could do better but nice job.

  • yeah i'm 13 and jump 4'10" =) what are the best ways to measure out steps? at our last meet ji just chose a random spot that felt comfortable but i don't know how far it was. any specific way?

  • @Baconboy2015 Im with you on the 13 thing but I jump 5'6". But to answer your question, An easy way to measure your steps is to walk to the side you jump froms pole that holds the bar, take one step out and then take either 7 or 9 steps back. DONT TAKE 8 STEPS IT WILL FUCK YOU UP! Happy I could help :)

  • @Baconboy2015 Find the perfect spot in practice. Either by running out either 7, or 9 steps. Or just testing different spots, and put a piece of tape on the ground. Measure that distance out, width and length. Then at your meet just measure out the distance you found in practice, and put tape there

  • Aey man thats nice i could had 6'6 my jr. year but I had already qualified for state but that was a dumb move even though i had already had made it i still could of went higher but right now i am senior and so far i got 6'5 and i going for 6'8,6'10 so thats was a nice form wish i had yours and better

  • epJumps, you said that 1m98 is your last performance before senior year. Funny becouse I know that in U.S.A are much better high-jumpers than Romania. In Romania , the seniors cleared 2m25 and it sucks.

  • you really shouldn't name it technique

  • Hi! I'm From Romania and I don't know this high 6'5". I'm 13 years old and i've jump 1.86.

  • @flexyfork i jumped at shawnee mission west then jccc now umkc maybe ucm depending on transfer hours

  • not even impressive 6 5 is junk

  • My best jump was 6'5". My jumping ended summer before senior year.

  • @epJumps Why'd you stop??

  • what was ur best jump ever?

  • When I was 12, I represented my school in the Annual National Sports Meet as a high--jumper. I reached 1.5m during that wet day and got into the finals, but could not get any further eventually. Now, I'm turning 15 tomorrow and it's been 3 years since I tried high-jump out. Finally, I get a chance in my Annual School Sports Day this month representing my class. I could probably barely reach 1.3m since I lost the technique and increase in weight from few years ago. Any help or suggestions?

  • that loks nice... my best is 6'3'' :(... but acording to my coach my best could be 6'8'' this year... it would be nice :D... specially be cause im 5'8''1/2 tall :D xD

    grettings, HJ rules...

  • mad props dude im just startin high jump as a freshman it isnt easy

  • hey youtube users,

i am 11 and can jump around 1.25-1.30 metres but i need to improve my high jump technique. Right now thats good enough to make my travelling under 14 team but i need to start getting above those heights if i have a realistic shot of winning in the big tournaments, please can any one of you experienced high jumpers give me some tips on how to jump higher, you can post them right here on the video comment board.

    Thank you and kind regards

  • Hey, do you know any good exercises that help improve jump?

  • New season coming up man any suggestions?

  • im 11 i can jump 1m only lol its hard

  • Check out my High jump videos bitches lol

  • im a sophomore in hs now but my freshman year i jumped 6'0 and got 3rd in regionals and 8th in state

  • tight im a sophomore also. 6 foots not bad at all.

  • you guys are feeling bad, try 5'0. Im not a high jumper but I was sure I'd be more comfortable with something over 5 fucking feet.

  • omgosh that was beautiful! Haha

  • =D We do this in School I love doing this

  • Iam 15 and I can jump 6´3´´

  • lol i can jump 5'2, i ve just started really lol

  • nice job dude!

  • im 12 and i can jump 4'6

  • wow!

thats all i got to say

  • im 15

i got 6 in regionals and went to states

and got demolished by some 5'6 african kid who jumped 7'4''

    wow

    and he was 16

  • I have a better result for you :) im 15 and i jumped 2.11 its not filmed tho.. but my 2.10 jump can be seen

  • yep i got 6 in practice

  • thats really good, my freshmen year i didnt do very good lol, i only made 5 2, sophmore year (this year) i made 5 10, i almost made 6 foot i have a video of it on my channel if you wanna check it out, its not very good but i would have made it if my feet were not crossed = /

  • That's a solid improvement! I'll check it out

  • That's a nice attempt there. The only thing i noticed was that you didn't have much of a hip thrust. A lot of people hit the bar with there butt so you could just try.. drivin your hips up^^^

  • thx for the look and the comments about it, i get what you mean, i need to tilt my head back which will raise my hips

  • found out what i've been doing wrong =P instead of having my foot "parallel" to the mat i've been jumping with the point of my foot facing toward the far corner of the mat IOW, i was never able to really get square but hey now i know what i needa work on!

  • Oh yeah cool, well have you noticed better results?

  • How old are you dude? your arch is hella nice but it looks like your approach is slow. it's hard to tell because it's not a full view.

  • I'm 18, thanks. Well the video is slowed a bit but thanks for pointing that out. It always helps to have people's opinions.

  • so what were you jumping your junior year?

  • 6'2" consistently, but I didn't really improve much my junior year. First cleared 6'2" in the first meet of my sophomore season.

  • yeah! and this year i'll take it more seriously I.E actually training before track starts

  • That's what I did this past pre-season. It helped dramaticly

  • Did bad today :( missed State by one jump not one height just one jump.

  • I'm sorry to hear, i know that's always tough not makin it, but you've got a few more years now so don't get down on yourself for not making state as a sophmore.

  • Yeah thanks =P i'll be sure to let ya'll know how i do!

  • hey thanks fer helpin me, ive nvr had like a "real" coach teach me nething n i wanna get 5"10 fer confrence in a couple of days cuz thats the record lol

  • No problem, i hear ya. Well yeah good luck, let me know how it goes. You can jump higher than that, just believe you can and you will.

  • i also noticed you dont do an arm drive any specific reason for that?

  • Well, because in my opinion the hip drive is more important and i feel that putting force into things that may not need to be forced will only take away from the total amount of energy.

  • Oh yeah, by the way good luck at your divisionals tomorrow, remember to keep an open mind set. Don't set goals, believe you can jump anything.

  • Yeah I'm a Sophmore atm, and that guide looks solid i have divisionals tomorrow so im gonna try some of your tips tyvm =P my main problem is a smooth "j" since my j can somtimes be more of a L i end up going to the bar not being square cus as you know when you do the J correctly when you jump that arc formed by the J helps you automatically get squared out so that's one thing i really need to work on =P if you can suggest any plys that would be much appreciated as well!

  • Thanks, Well here is something i read: A smooth transition from the straight to the curve ensures that the curve can be run properly. Any cutting, stepping out, or other improper transition into the curve effectively eliminates much of the curve, as well as its associated benefits.

  • Also, that inward lean can dramatically pay-off too. I would recommend running in an "O" or "figure 8" direction, working on your lean, hips high and smooth steps. It can be hard to focus on the little things when you add the entire concept of high jumping in.

  • thts prty sick, im in 8th grade n get 5"9 n i cant get 5"10 idk y i like jump into the bar when i get to 5"10 n dont go up

  • That's awesome, that's very good as an 8th grader. Make sure you don't put the numbers in your head(5'10"). You gotta keep an open mind and believe you can jump anything before every attempt. Also, are you taking off from the same place as you would for the lower heights? Cause obviously as the bar gets higher your take-off spot may need to be adjusted. Just an idea..

  • 4got to ask what grade you in???

  • I am a senior, what grade are you in?

  • I can get 6'2" i tried doing that form that you do by reaching over the bar with my arms first pretty sure it's impossible for me lol

  • That's solid. Well your arms should only be a guide but here are some quick tips or things you could try:

Approach - Hips high & forward - Lean inward - Smooth "J" - Smooth, consistent speed or acceleration

Take-Off - Same spot every time - Solid plant with heel of foot

Form over the bar - Use arm as guide only - Drive hips up - Chin back

    Result - Land on shoulders

If anyone else would like to add/modify please post >>

  • well done mate, thats some amaazing jump in technique, style hight and professionalism

    A* jump

  • Hey, thanks, i appreciate it

  • excellent form

  • Thank You

  • good job how tall are you

  • thanks, I am 6'1"
