keep the mash in a regular temp room 65-70 degrees, the fermentation process will made it warm to the touch, and if it's done rite makes a wonderful breakfast cereal! YUM!!
Question. If a person wants to run that through the distiller again, how long should i wait with the mr distiller to shut it off the second time? And, will I have to have something to collect the methanol the second time around?
that law is completely up to the state. sure, Federal laws does say its illegal but state law supersedes Federal law, unless other wise declared by the constitution. as declared by the 10th amendment.
Well this isn't really shine. Moonshine made on a still with corn mash and no extra sugar added normally comes off at 170-190 proof. Your "truck" will run on this 110 sugar stuff, but your "truck" won't like the way it tastes.
ok so if you turn it off after collecting a quart, once it cools down can you start the process over with remaining wash in the distiller, or should it be discarded ? seems like a lot of waste if you just toss it.
i read all 154 comments before asking why is your wash crystal clear? Mine is cloudy after a week. Its just sugar and water? what happens if i distill a cloudy wash will it go clear on distilling? will it kill all the yeast? will it taste more like crap than its supposed too? Thees and more vital questions will be answered on our next installment of "YOU TUBE ;THE BEAST THAT KNEW EVERYTHING!"
I know right, I have a VHS recorder/player hooked up to my computer, and I even have my tape re-winder right on my desk, so I can rewind youtube videos super easy.
do you have to turn the still off after every quart collected to keep the water from running over? i am doing exactly as started but my proof was only 40. but i also didn't turn the still off as started in the pop-up balloon at 8:04 on the video?
@dbi1036 I think a 23% wash means that the mixture he made in the beginning (with the sugar, water, yeast, ect.) will have a content of 23% alcohol when it is done fermenting. If you want to make the alcohol content higher then you have to distill the fermented mixture. The more times you distill it, the more alcohol you will get out of it.
@dbi1036 Let me restate what I meant at the end of my last post. The more times you distill it, the higher the proof you will get. However, every time you distill it, you will actually get less final product.
when you applied for your license, did they question the size of the still you are using?I just not sure about applying for the license with the mr.distiller. I would like to experiment with it.
the guys machine must be getting to hot and introducing water into the mixture. its probably used for distilling water. when i make my shine my hydrometer says its 180-195 proof
@nalyib right now they are not, but if they drink like my grandpa did to Gin, they will go blind or get liver problem and die, like my grandpa. its just a matter of time.
@chwynd Well... 100-110 proof fruit brandy (pálinka) is quite regular here. Some of these countrymen are alcoholics, and some die early, but believe me, one thing they don't do is going blind. Blindness usually can be associated with poor distillation and poor separation of methanol.
This is why some 'bathtub gins' or 19th century cheap absinthes were causing blindness.
@chwynd ah no it wont moonshine is 185-190 proof. as long as you dont drink the first pour off, wich for a small batch like that about a shot glass. and cheers. it aint illegal if you dont tell anybody lol. the only reason its illegal is the goment cant get there taxes of the booze
@chwynd Nah, haven't you ever tried Everclear? That's 190 proof. I've had it quite a few times... woke up with a blank memory, but still able to see, lol.
it may be illegal to make it but is a cop guna bust your door down for making alcohol over a meth lab next door . i want to see that happen .... BooOM get down on the grown wheres the meth , the 16 yearolds like i was just tring to impress my friends with some boos . the meth heads next door are like oh shit that was close.. click click
I'm figuring that using sugar doesn't make a smell very bad. Does corn? Or sugar? What are the ratios of sugar/yeast to CO2 output? are there any ways to maximize CO2 output?
wow Ok here's the deal.... you know how to shine?? why aren't you making it? is its such a big disposal to your personal family right? tell me ask you... who is losing money on your booze?.... the gvt? i dunno as far as the usa... BUT WOW WHO SAYS WHAT I CAN DO AND I CANT
Just like you use all 10,000 gallons for fuel purposes only, I use my marijuana for medical purposes only - I would never dream of selling it..... That would be criminal and wrong.
I've been doing this for a few years. A few observations:
Since the yeast is the most expensive part, you will save a ton of money if you don't use the whole satchel of turbo yeast. I use about 1/8th- 1/5th of my satchels and it ferments fine. It just takes a little longer.
Also the first part that comes off your distiller- you can put it in your windshield washer in your car.
My setup (in home) is using a modified pressure cooker. Only disadvantage I have experienced over my much larger Copper Potstill is that I have to usually run it twice to get er down to 190. My Potstill never has ta be ran thru twice so not sure whats goin on with my pressure still. Any ideas?
@Nate2203 - as follows - the first off the still is methanol - not ethanol - however using sugar water ,yeast you will not produce any reasonable amounts of methanol- only if using stone fruit - however first 1cl should be tossed as it tastes bad ! however safe to drink !
@pinytheelder that not realy true, methanol distills the same as ethanol, just a few deg cooler but not all at once, it will come of throughout the run, the nasties at the start are esters and taste poo.. there would be more methanol in a glass of orange juice then in the whole wash
My fav part is the charcoal filter, to make sure it tastes good for the engine. Also taking off the first shot and the guy walks to the left to "get rid of it"...bet he downed it! Bet your engine fuel would like methanol, lol!
The first part is ethanol which makes people go blind if they drink it, I guarantee you that he did not down it. Ethanol has a lower boiling point so it boils off first.
wash is simply the surgar water and yeast mixture. if there would have been any kind of grain like corn or barley, then it is called wort for the first 3 days, then beer after that. yes, you can put whatever you want in your "fuel" i will leave you to explain how your truck likes 7 year old wiskey.
@globalbiznetwork the wash is what you charge the still with, yeah you can flavour it, BUT turbo yeasts will make crap tasting shine. use champagne yeast and make a lower proof wash but more of it.. ok more work but the product is HEAPS better and wont need carbon filtering.. also these stills SUCK
if these suck so bad, what do you recommend a person to do that is just learning how to distill and wants to start out from scratch? there is no way i'm gonna build one.
@ogskeetdizzle if you go to the website that he talked about "milehi" you will find some good stills that will fit atop a sanke type keg (with the valve removed, i have videos describing how) and get a simple pot still, then boil 7kgs of cracked corn in about 10ltrs of water with about 5-6 kg of sugar for about 10mins, then put this in a fermenter and top upto about 25ltrs and cool to about 20°C add champagne yeast and ferment. rack of the wash and keep the corn and yeast in the bottom. distill
@ogskeetdizzle collect everything till the proof falls to 5%ABV (this is the "low wines" and run the still as hard as you can)then keep 10 ltrs of the "hot slops" (what left in the boiler) and add another 5-6kg of sugar top up to 25ltrs and cool to 20°C pour this onto the corn and yeast that you kept and it will start fementing again. you now have a sour mash corn whiskey wash(propper shine). keep doing the same process removing a scoop or 2 of corn each time and replaceing it with new.
@ogskeetdizzle once you have about 25 ltrs of low wines, charge your still with this and do a slower run, collecting in small beer bottles keep them in the order that they cam out of the still. the next day smell and taste them and find your "cuts" the first ones will be "heads" (kind of paint thinner smell) the end ones will be "tails" (fusel oils, kind of cardboard smell). blend the nice ones (and add just a little more tails than you think) and age at 64%ABV on toasted oak. WHISKEY!!
@ogskeetdizzle it will but in such a tiny amount it wont matter.. all commercial distilleries dont trow away the heads. a glass of orange juice will contain more methanol than the entire 25 ltrs of wash you put in the still. methanol distills the same as ethanol, it will be present for almost the entire run but only a little more concentrated at the start.. you can throw away the first 200mls of each spirit run if you like. but i never have and im still fine
How much do you have in that set up and what is the cost per making, and can you add , fruits and mash to what you are doing, if"it were legal" thanks
So if you did 4 runs at 110 proof, then ran a full gallon on a second distillation in mr. distiller and stopped at about 1/2 a gallon would the result be closer to 190 proof?
I am tired of seeing my tax money is gone to crooked politicians and their bankers friends as a bonus..and some S.O.B will come and tell me it's illegal to make booze for my own consumption ??.. is't it too much , folks ??
He's using table sugar it comes from sugar cane, it is a plant that has cellulose fibers. Trees have similar fibers, so yes there is methanol but the % that it takes to damage the optic nerve, you would have to drink 20 liters of his shine at one time to hit the blind mark. I've tested mine in a GC, it's a low amount.
The government won't catch you doing this and if you do get caught and it's a small amount like this video and you aren't distributing it you will probably just get let off with a fine or something minor.
making mooshine was only illegal during prohibition as long as your aren't massivly producing it , selling it, or making it for fuel you can make enough for personal consumption 100% legally if you are making it for fuel you have to fill out paper work to get a permit from the atf but its not hard dont sale it and you are not breaking the law
For guys who ain't got much money. Bakers Yeast, Wal-Mart Sugar, and a aluminum garden bucket works wonders. Ferment until its clear.
If you use bakers yeast, make sure you change your yeast to sugar ratio to 5 lbs sugar and 3 gallons water, since bakers yeast can't stand as much sugar as brewers yeast.
Thats how you make cheap ethanol for fuel, *cough*.
This could change my manual wheelchair into a power chair with a turbo booster!!!!!! Thanks for the great idea. I watched The Great Escape 20 times but the instruction wasn't as clear as you.
well basically you just need to "infect" your batch with yeast so a teasopoon pergallon will work, it will take longer to ferment cuz it needs more time to multiply but it doubles like every hour or somthing, the only thing about not using turbo yeast is that the strain of yeast you use will die from a lower alcohol content than the turbo
Ok I know about the requirements about obtaining a fuel producers license but one of those requirements is that you have to distill in a building separate to a Dwelling because the Ethanol is highly flammable and the TTB just doesn't want people distilling in their homes so how can you be doing this in your kitchen???
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
U are right beerimpact, I turned my neighbors in for making it in the kitchen. I also turned my 80 year old grandma in for the same thing. SWAT teams raided her lil place and locked her up. It was for thier own good. Why does no one trust or like me. I am such a good citizen. I even reported my dad for not wearing seat belt, but local officials ignored my report.
Ha ha Funny Cheeseball Im all for home-distilling but buggrs sells stills through his Milehigh Distilling website and while Im sure that the TTB & ATF turn a "blind eye" (sic) to small stills they could if they wanted to subpoena a full customer list from Milehigh Distilling so its a good Idea to play by their rules especially when your promoting the use of stills on the Internet .
thats is just of of the biproducts that yeast makes when consuming sugar ethly alcohol is the the main thing they make but they also produce a little bit of methonal and a little bit of acatone such as in fingernail polish and there are a few others that are made....this is true in large setups to such as jackdaniels, absolute vodka, captain morgan, any type of large scale oporation or even small ones like this, its just somthing you have to deal with but its simple cause that stuff boils of 1st

Why do u have little jars of flavouring? If u say u don't drink it... Clearly visible towards the end of the video bottom right hand corner.

At 8:18 you claim sugar and yeast by product can contain methanol as you say you discard.
methanol Is from WOOD not ethanol pissing and CO2 burping yeast.
I just wanted to clear that up with you and your viewers.....
the only thing you are discarding at that early stage is any left over carbon dust.......

NoMatesMoe 2 years ago
He's using table sugar it comes from sugar cane, it is a plant that has cellulose fibers. Trees have similar fibers, so yes there is methanol but the % that it takes to damage the optic nerve, you would have to drink 20 liters of his shine at one time to hit the blind mark. I've tested mine in a GC, it's a low amount.
manicx195 2 years ago 2
The government won't catch you doing this and if you do get caught and it's a small amount like this video and you aren't distributing it you will probably just get let off with a fine or something minor.

What is that airlock called? I saw the same thing in another video and the guy called it a valve. So what is it exactly?
djnacho2128 2 years ago
Why is this illegal. No one could possibly hurt anyone but themselves.
If you make distilling your own stuff illegal, you might as well bring back the prohibition... serves the same purpose.
johne30587 2 years ago
Good question why is weed illegal even though it's safer than alcohol and cigarettes.
JonnyTommyGuns 2 years ago
Is 110 proof high enough to run in E85 compatible engines? I was told that when you buy fuel alcohol it's in the 160 proof range.
Seamus449 2 years ago
no because 110 proof is 45% water and that will f*ck your engine up. E85 is 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline.
JonnyTommyGuns 2 years ago
Lol, If you're using this for fuel, why does your lawnmower need rum flavorings? Haha, that a way to make it obvious that you're drinking it!

Can you please answer this question for me? Why doesn't this wash need cornmeal? I'm thinking about buying one of these and need to know.
justinge999 2 years ago
the sugar from the cornmeal is what ferments to alcohol so by adding straight sugar it saves the fermenting process from corn.
you dont have to use just corn any sugar based plant cellulose will do it sugar beat is good to use also or fruits

making mooshine was only illegal during prohibition as long as your aren't massivly producing it , selling it, or making it for fuel you can make enough for personal consumption 100% legally if you are making it for fuel you have to fill out paper work to get a permit from the atf but its not hard dont sale it and you are not breaking the law
Pitdog13 2 years ago
not true, its the process of distillation of alcohol prohibited by ATF.
Wine, beer and ciders are ok , vodka, rum or the like not.
samhellion 2 years ago
100% incorrect
You may not Distill alcohol in the US except for fuel.

FUEL FOR GETTING DRUNK!!
lexmark136 2 years ago
For guys who ain't got much money. Bakers Yeast, Wal-Mart Sugar, and a aluminum garden bucket works wonders. Ferment until its clear.
If you use bakers yeast, make sure you change your yeast to sugar ratio to 5 lbs sugar and 3 gallons water, since bakers yeast can't stand as much sugar as brewers yeast.
Thats how you make cheap ethanol for fuel, *cough*.
haffoxtrot 2 years ago
I thought that sugar alone wasn't enough to keep the yeast alive for long.

Crazyboyz727 2 years ago
you dont need to all the yeast needs is fermentable sugars

right, but doesn't corn make for a higher quality product?

HA!

FroggyVector 2 years ago
how much regular yeast do you need if u dont buy the turbo yeast?
gnarkill2468 2 years ago
well basically you just need to "infect" your batch with yeast so a teasopoon pergallon will work, it will take longer to ferment cuz it needs more time to multiply but it doubles like every hour or somthing, the only thing about not using turbo yeast is that the strain of yeast you use will die from a lower alcohol content than the turbo

Ok I know about the requirements about obtaining a fuel producers license but one of those requirements is that you have to distill in a building separate to a Dwelling because the Ethanol is highly flammable and the TTB just doesn't want people distilling in their homes so how can you be doing this in your kitchen???
beerimpact 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
U are right beerimpact, I turned my neighbors in for making it in the kitchen. I also turned my 80 year old grandma in for the same thing. SWAT teams raided her lil place and locked her up. It was for thier own good. Why does no one trust or like me. I am such a good citizen. I even reported my dad for not wearing seat belt, but local officials ignored my report.
cheeseball53 3 years ago
Ha ha Funny Cheeseball Im all for home-distilling but buggrs sells stills through his Milehigh Distilling website and while Im sure that the TTB & ATF turn a "blind eye" (sic) to small stills they could if they wanted to subpoena a full customer list from Milehigh Distilling so its a good Idea to play by their rules especially when your promoting the use of stills on the Internet .

yea i hate how we have lost freedoms such as making moonshine and othe stuff, we need to rebel, anarchy!!!
altoids18ROX 2 years ago
to make pure water you wouldnt use a wash, you would just run water through the distiller (unless im mistaken.)

cheeseball53 3 years ago
well then we apply logic and it must run to 212 because the guy said you could distill water in it as well.
godzilla74114 3 years ago
because the first bit is methanol (since it boils first) not ethanol and is poisonous
goofynz 3 years ago
with the ingrediants hes usuing u should even have to worry about the methonal that come more from liquor made from wood
hardlango 3 years ago
thats what i thought to. how could sugar, water & yeast produce methanol? (granted i know little about this subject)
eyepatchinc 2 years ago
thats is just of of the biproducts that yeast makes when consuming sugar ethly alcohol is the the main thing they make but they also produce a little bit of methonal and a little bit of acatone such as in fingernail polish and there are a few others that are made....this is true in large setups to such as jackdaniels, absolute vodka, captain morgan, any type of large scale oporation or even small ones like this, its just somthing you have to deal with but its simple cause that stuff boils of 1st
